i just inherited my grandfathers fly tying set up and my father taught me a little bit about it but i just wanted to say THANK YOU very much for all the helpful tips love your tie off method! but i had a few questions. i fly fish with a open bail fishing rod with a water bubble do you suggest any awesome fly fishing set ups (rod, reels)?
Do you have to take the feathers off one side of the feather to create a hackle. This is the only bit thta i'm realy struggleing with.I think that i may be useing the wrong kind of feathers.Do you have to use a certain kind to get the perfect hackle or can any feather be used. thank you mr m.p.ellis
great vid dave! i reckon the partridge and orange is the simplist fly to tie, because there is no rib. im off fly fishing in 1 hour, so i'll see how it works!
Thanks for your comments. Tying fishing flies is like riding a bike, once you get the hang of it ,it just gets easier. When you get to tie off stroke the hackle fibres back and hold them down whilst you do the double half hitch. Dont forget to varnish.
Cheers for the tying tips dave. Started tying yesterday when I got my vice and have been using a book to show me some patterns. Been watching your videos as a reference when the book fails me. I wish I could half hitch as quickly as that but it keeps getting trapped up in the hackle. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your comment. Yes the early patterns had waxed primrose silk to make it olive.Wilf Proud called the spider pattern, wing or no wing, 'Greenwells glory' 60 years ago and that is how it will be with me,until they pack my vice in the casket with me ( in the next 60yrs.) Spider patterns catch more fish than winged versions.
OK Dave i agree with you on spiders being better than wings. Do you have any vids showing feather winging techniques, cant find any on here. But i can understand that trad winging techniques are not used very often these days.
Your videos are very clear and concise. But that fly is more of a Greenwell spider than the full Glory. Also i am sure you know, the original had a body of dirty, waxed yellow tying silk, plus hen blackbird as wings, (nowadays it is dyed starling substitute). This is not meant as a criticism, more as extra info. That fly would defo catch trout!
You are a great fly tier and an even better fly tying instructor. Thanks. I started fly tying last summer and I am still learning so much. I really like your videos. I am only 21 years old so I have a long ways to go before I get that good.
I have been using your methods with great success at the vise....and in addition they do (all so far) do catch trout and other fish as well. MORE LESSONS PLEASE .....Thank You ... R.J.O.
dave thank you very much for showing these patterns Im sure they will be very helpful. I also enjoyed the little history lesson about these patterns aswell. Please keep up the great work.

i thought a greenwells glory was a dry fly?
brandollarz 3 years ago 2
I was taught to tie a greenwells glory with green silk, olive tail, yellow wire for ribs, starling feather wings and cock hackle.?
But i suppose it will work like the one you done david :) I was convinced it had wings and a tail which made it float.
