Insightful , so what tuning do we have here, open G? Great Job-i used to play it in standard key of A-always loved the drumming and the Hammond a la Billy Preston(?)
@nasalwhine , That is true. I always used the standard tuning and played the song more of a Johnny Winter style. There are so many variations of this great song, but yours sounds the closest to The Rolling Stones. Thanks for all the lessons you are posting. You do not know how much it is appreciated.
Great Stuff. I love getting wild looks from people when I play this song in open e. We play the intro live and it goes over well. I love how you are always true to Keef's voicing/style yet add your flair. We must be brothers of other mothers. ;-) Anyway, just curious what made you think of using the Eb on the 3rd string instead of regular open Eb tuning which would have been a G...sounds good, I like it.

@rafaelkrug no particular album.. its in a lot of compilations... the song was released as a single just before beggars banquet in 1968.. great years of music and illumination.
@1234gregor Thanks for the info. I'd always heard about the overloaded cassette player bit giving that odd electric/acoustic sound, but I could never nail the tuning(s). Some suggest an open-E tuning, which is a good guess. I always wondered why that great 9-bar intro was omitted from live performances, and it's likely that open tuning(s) couldn't be replicated live. But my observation is correct if you check out ROCK & ROLL CIRCUS and HYDE PARK '69 - un-capoed and capoed open-G, respectively.
Fantastic! Looks fun as hell playing in the open tuning! I've been playing it in standard using power chords, but this looks so much more fun! (And of course, sounds much better)
I've heard that Keith plays in open E on the studio recording, with other overdubbing added. He appears to be in standard tuning on ROCK & ROLL CIRCUS in the key of B (at both the IIV and II positions), and as early as '69 New Hyde Park had adapted his newly-found open-G capoed at the IV position (B), and he also changed the riff's structure from B5-B5-E-F#-A5 to B5-B5-A-B5-D5, which remain interchangeable and Ronnie's counterpart complements. GREAT TRACK & GREAT, FUN RIFF.
@DDEENY I read he used two acoustics played into a cassette recorder on the original recording which made them sound electric played back into the master. Both were detuned to E flat capo first fret (giving open E) which I think tightens/compresses the sound. One had the E-B-E-G# strung with 12 string octave strings accounting for those crystalyne high notes in the big B chords etc. These factors make it very difficult to reproduce, although this version is more authentic than most I've heard
Wow the tuning is SOOOOOOO Awkward!! Seems like cake having to bar only 1 fret for a chord but with the way most chords are played, it's gonna be awkward trying to play O.O and same question as tubetube1221 has: ...are you sure about the tuning? is that how Keith played it?
I have purchased your tutorials on dvd. I find them to be very useful. This is a very good cover of Jumpng Jack Flash. Never would have figured the tuning on my own. Thank you for sharing. You are considered my favorite subscription with along side of privettricker. You should check him out as well. Peace.
It sounds like the Stones live when they did those promotional videos in the 60's promoting JJF at Olympic studios. The open tuning is very cool. What key are you using? E? G?
Hi, I have watched all your videos and have to say what a total inspirational player you are. You always get me to pick up my guitar and practice. Many thanks
@SavantSvant in JJF he used open D in studio then started using open G (capo 4th fret) live. Some other Stones classics use open G as well, some with capo some not. It's possible to play this with standard tuning but it doesn't sound "right".
Wow... Very Very Very cool, I can't decide on what I love more, Brown Sugar, or Jumpin Jack Flash. I'm assuming you have over 35 years of experience which is far superior to only my petty 15. Keep up the awesome covers.
wtf how can this be fake realy have you heard the sound of his guitar its nice but nothing like that of keith richards (no offence dude) also the technique this guy uses is different to the style of keith richards besides the fact that keith played without the bottom E string because he usually used open G tuning and the bottom string doesnt sound very nice but to be fair nice effort couldnt have doen better my self
