@Wolfenkrieger I'm an armour enthusiast so to speak (well I mostly google it and play Combat Mission :)) so I know a few things. Only later versions of Pz III had spaced armour on the driver's plate and mantlet to defeat HEAT rounds. Schurtzen were only for protection against AT rifles because their small thickness (5 mm only) didn't effect HEAT rounds. They were designed to deform tungsten 14,5 mm AT rifle rounds so they would lose their penetrative power once they reach the main armour.
@Wolfenkrieger The director explicitly said that they wanted to make the Tiger 'special', to make it 'connect' with people, to set it apart from other Tiger II's, so they decided to put Schurtzen on. He said - no, I haven't seen any pictures of tigers with sideskirts, but I also haven't seen any document that says it didn't happen.
Now, I say this is nonsense, because Tiger's 80mm armour is more than enough to stop any anti-tank rifle round. They could've just done something else with it i think
@vukashin88 But I gotta say - those replicas look really really outstanding. Come to think of it, that Tiger replica (based on the T-34) from 'Saving private Ryan' looks like done by amateurs compared to this one. Really outstanding effort this one.
@Wolfenkrieger Really? The other day I saw some concept art of it. And when I saw Tiger II with side skirts it just came to me that that movie is being made by people with no knowledge and understanding of WWII armor whatsoever. Form-over-substance type of guys who thought 'oh, those schuertzen look cool, lets put them on a KT'. Why would Tiger II ever need side skirts? They were invented to protect thin skinned Pz III's and IV's (and Panthers) from the soviet 14.5 mm anti-tank rifles.
Panzer IV became the backbone of the German tank fleet...
