  • @megasimon999 Do you know how much it weighs including the kydex sheath? I am a backpacker and do not want to carry a very heavy knife.

    Thanks

  • @airbus001 I'd say about 10oz

  • @airbus001 was just watching dff video on theis knife that said 9.9oz 9.8 somthing like that

  • how much is it

  • @OGKILLa9365 I think currently around $75 depending on the version sheath you get.

  • Great looking knife.

  • @Nickel1911 Its a pretty sweet blade!

  • Cool accent.

  • @samusaran115 You're welcome? lol

  • Thanks for your review, great looking knife.. now you've had it a while do you find there would be much use for the serrated edge version, is the blade length long enough and how is it as a general use camping/survival knife? I'm considering buying this or the bigger seal team version. Thanks for any help

  • @gregvance I find this knife very useful in most areas but its obviously not really designed for camping or survival as such is designed as a "Tactical" blade but push comes to shove any knife you have on you at the time will be your camping/survival tool.

As far as serrations they would be better for water adventures due to the nature of the dangers involved in diving are partly getting tangled underwater and a serrated edge will be quicker through rope etc

  • Thanks for your review, great looking knife.. now you've had it a while do you find there would be much use for the serrated edge version, is the blade length long enough and how is it as a general use camping/survival knife? • is it american made?

  • @antz733 Its made in Taiwan

  • may i know what is the name of this knife.i meant what category does it belong to

  • @taiwanlong I guess its a Tactical blade, but can be used for defence, offence, as a tool etc etc

  • Does it come with that sheath or do I have to buy that as well?

  • @radioactiveraddish that sheath came with the knife

  • seal pup elite is a great little blade i got 2 of them :)

  • @cbr600rrturbo Nice....2 is better than one :)

  • Can you please tell me what type of knot is it onthe lanyard? i want the exact same on my knife. its pretty cool

  • @kumarramachandran I'll do a video on how to make it.

  • @kumarramachandran The lanyard video is up on my channel.

  • On U.S. Amazon.com the SEAL pup is 54 dollars free shipping. SEAL pup Elite is 66 dollars and so far the only known difference is it has a Titanium Nitride coating on the blade.

I dont know what the UK Amazon price is nor do I know how shipping works. My understanding is they are starting to clamp down on knife carrying over there, would not be surprised if mail order has been affected too.

  • @shortylickens69 here's the main differences

    Thicker steel stock (.185)

    Satin Finish blade

Newly designed longer ergonomic handle with deeper finger grooves

Racy new blade shape with longer cutting edge

Added blade spine rasp for notching, filing, and thumb placement

Injection molded glass reinforced handle scored with grip lines

    From the SOG website

  • what is the difference between the sog seal pup elite and the sog seal pup

  • @96waveonwave I don't own the Pup just the elite but from memory I think the elite is a bit longer and a different steel.

  • Is this knife full tang? I'm looking into one and i haven't been able to get a straight answer on this. I can deal with "Made in Taiwan" But if this knife isn't full tang i don't think i'll be buying this.

  • @shawny142 Yep its a full tang blade.

  • how much are they and are they made in USA?

  • @tractorkid223 They are made in Taiwan and I'm not sure of the current price.

  • @megasimon999 Full retail is $80. Gander Mountain ran out of them so they sold me the display one...Still brand new but at more than half off.

  • Are these legal to carry in the uk or only for 'outdoor sports'? Quite fancy one for my survival/camping kit.

  • @bragg2012 I'm guessing as most knives in the UK over 3 inches and fixed you would need a good reason to have one on the street....ie heading to a camping ground/bushcraft etc

  • The one at Dicks is 420 steel with nylon sheath ... and its a seal pup not a seal pup elite .

  • a great small survival knife i keep this in my emergency survival kit in mt car

you can never be to carful

  • @with33 Great planning!

  • They should really make the knife blade thicker.

    And GREAT VIDEO BTW!!!

  • @bagochickens I think the thin blade is specific to water operations, but a thicker version for land use would be cool :)

  • @megasimon999 Sorry to be rude but the sog seal 2000 is made for sea use, the regular seal will rust if exposed to sea water

  • @MrLANDRONICS Its not rude just wrong....google sog seal pup elite saltwater and read the testing done on this blade, its absolutely designed for use in saltwater. As any knife clean it well after any outdoors use.

  • Ok I will be gentle

    Good vid!!!

  • @cid2598 lol cheers for that, I didn't feel a thing :)

  • where did you get the straight edge because all the seal pups i look are serated

  • @1840218403 I think it was off e-bay about 2 years ago, just search straight edge sog seal pup elite.

  • I got a question for anyone out there would you think of this of a good survival knife and is the thickens of the knife good and solid for batoning?

  • @Hordesthugz13 more of a tactical knife.

  • 2:47 - 2:48 nice voice crack, who cares. nice video

  • how much did u pay for it

  • @tobyownz About 2 years ago it was $95.00 I think.

    Cheaper now.

  • @megasimon999 it is actually about $115 now, I just recently bought this knife and that is how much it is without tax

  • @Riseaboveish you overpayed by a ton man I've seen these as low as 50 bucks

  • @ShaggyOtis Damn that sucks! So I could have just gone to dicks and got one for $50! That sucks, well i guess next time I should look around more before i buy. Thanks guys!

  • @Riseaboveish ebay they sell for 70-80 bucks.....

  • @Riseaboveish they sell for 50$ at dicks but i think it comes with just a nylon sheath

  • Are you an Aussie or is that a slight UK accent I hear?

  • @Mudmulligan Im a Brit with a slight Aussie twang left over from a 6 month holiday there!

Never been able to kick it! lol

  • @megasimon999 Thats a pretty heavy Aussie accent I must say. Im an Aussie and it took me a while to pick it! Hope you enjoyed your stay anyway. Cool knife, Ive been looking for a smaller outdoors blade myself, but Ive narrowed it down to an RAT RC4 or a Cold Steel Master hunter......only because I prefer a full flat grind for attacking wood... :-)

    Cheers, Scott.

  • @Mudmulligan G'day! I have to agree Scott, its not a true wilderness knife and I would also choose the ESEE RC4 or a Fallkniven F1. The SEAL would be great for snorkelling off the Great Barrier reef (even though I was thinkingabout sharks the whole time) LOL

Its a perfect water knife and thats really whats its designed for, although I would want the serrated half version for being in the water too. Thanks very much for the comment cobber!

    Simon

  • @megasimon999 im aussie =)

  • do you think that it can rust with that part of the sheat that doesnt cover the knive?

i think they made it to cut seatbelts

  • @HarseyAirRanger Hi, the knife wont rust in or out of the sheath, its designed to be in and around water.

The access point in the side of the sheath is for cutting anything you want with out having to remove your knife.

  • @megasimon999 thanks, nice review

  • I have a Coldsteel SRK AUS 8 never been used with slight sheath wear on the finish I would be interested in trading for a seal pup elite. If anyone is interested leave me a message on my page.I dont mind if its been used as long as its not worn out or broken.

  • i love the sog knives

  • Do they sell those in Australia

  • @Jaidyn1998 Im really not sure. You can order them online but I hear Australian customs and knife laws are getting pretty tight!

  • @megasimon999 yer true thanks

  • @Jaidyn1998 Yes they most certainly do old boy google "cutting edge knives" and it will all become clear. Just promise you wont stab me with it!

  • @Jaidyn1998

Yes you can. Not sure where you're living, but i know in Queensland you can.

  • @SO17Alpha ok btw i live in townsville :)

  • @Jaidyn1998

    Hahah same bro :P

Did you end up getting one?

  • @SO17Alpha hahaha awesome nah i didnt

    but still lookin

  • @Jaidyn1998

Yer, same boat. I was goign to buy a Seal Pup, but the handle was to small, so I'm getting a Gerber LMF II

Asken Bros in town has a good price..145? I think

  • @SO17Alpha true thats a pretty good price ae

  • @Jaidyn1998

    Yer sure is

  • @Jaidyn1998 Gday Jaidyn. Yeah you can get em, but theyre a bit pricey locally. With the Aussie dollar equal to the US you can easily buy from the US. Customs wont bother you with this type of knife, theyre more interested in folders that can be opened one handed at the moment!

Nice review by the way. ;-)

    Cheers, Scott.

  • I found my sog seal pup elite to be not "easy" to sharpen. I am not sure if it's my sharpening style or what. I use a diamond stone from DMT (coarse), then finish with either ceramic stone, or a stropping on leather. Takes alot of time, and the edge is just ok sharp.

  • @bigdogITbiker AUS-8 steel is pretty hard to sharpen but I find once sharp its a good edge.I Use a DMT in the field and a Waterstone and leather strop at home, although Im happy with a sharp edge not razor edge.

  • where can I get the sheath only?

  • @hadd13 Look on e-bay, theres a Nylon option a velcro option and a Tek lok option

The on the same as mine is $25.

  • @megasimon999 I have the nylon and it sucks

  • @hadd13 Well theres 2 kydex options for you

  • what do u think between this and the cold steel csk???

  • @jambaboy789 Do you mean the Benchmade CSK or the Cold Steel SRK?

  • @megasimon999 i mean the cold steel srk VS sog seal pup elite? Thanks

  • @megasimon999 could you possibly send me a message in paragraphs about what you think

  • what are the spike things on the top of the blade?

  • @hitmansam98 The notches are deigned for added thumb gripping/notching wood and filing. Probably be more handy for notching.

  • is the handle zytel?

  • @akwardsiIence Yes it is.

  • @megasimon999 Glass reinforced Zytel

  • Mine is couple of years old with black shinny coating on it. I am not an original owner, but bought it in brand new condition from a knife collector. Do you have any idea how old (the year of release) it is ? It says Seal Pup Elite on the blade without SOG logo.

  • @urkingod Im not sure. You can try going onto blade forums, theres a forum run by SOG and you can ask them about your knife straight from the horses mouth.

    Hope this helps

  • @urkingod Try blade forums (dot) com

Theres a forum run by all the main knife manufactures including SOG and you can ask them directly

It wont let me type a website address.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi, can you please send me the link where you learnt to tie the lanyard knot.

There's so many but I like the look of the one you have on the sog.

    Thx

  • @vjanda1 link sent to your page

  • Per the vid, I know you said it was your first attempt but here is some advice...

...Think about your topic of review, the characteristics of the knife can be read from the label or website. How long it takes to give it an edge and holds it as well as its construction is all that really matters! the rest is just fluff. Thanks for the post though. For the record the AUS 8 steel takes an edge fairly slowly but seems to hold it well! The knife is nearly indestructible. very well made!

  • Thanks.the more vids I do the better they get.

  • How do I pick ONE ultimate survival knife to keep around a house in case of emergency, etc? I do not know anything about knifes.

  • mmm good question.

The knife needs to be useful in an urban and wilderness situation.

easy to keep sharp, not too small not too big something that still looks intimidating too a bad guy but remains practical.

half serrations or full blade....personal choice but the serrations make it hard to sharpen.

  • I think the Gerber LMF II is a pretty good all round knife, it has half serrations and has a built in sharpener in the sheath. the sheath also has a good attachment system.

I dont think theres one knife that will suit all jobs I have the the seal pup elite and a Kbar camp knife for heavy chopping and im gonna add the gerber LMF too then I think that gives me enough choice.

I would take all three if the SHTF or if down to 2 the camp knife and one of the other two.

  • @urkingod There is no such thing as the one perfect survival knife, they all are worthless without survival skills which have to be learned practiced and maintained. That said our primitive ancestors who lived it day in and day out used knapped obsidian (almost a glass...sharpest edge known to man) and flint. The rest are just features, if you think you might need to survive longer than a few days or weeks then sharpening is necessary, so a blade that takes and holds an edge is important for

  • this, but do you know how to sharpen a knife? It takes practice. High carbon steels are best for taking and holding an edge. Thickness matters in terms of durability and use (heavy chopping?). I use the seal pup elite myself...and out of curiosity I picked up one of Tom Brown's tracker knives (nearly a hatchet) its a good knife, but with two different blade angles and a gut hook it is a pain to sharpen. VERY HEAVY! The key: hold them pick what you like and learn to use it!

  • Hi jeremystriumph, what is high carbon steel? I have heard of that before. Do you know of any knive cos. using this materieal for their knives? thanks.

  • i dont like that sheath only because the cut out lets water, mud, etc inside of the sheath which causes rusting plus the cut out shows the part of the blade that is mostly used there for can be dull and useless i have the original sog seal pup and i figured i would just throw that out there

  • I guess thats why they offer a few options.

The AUS 8 steel is a highly corrosive resistant steel designed for use in and near water.

I think if you where really concerened about it you could use Tuf Glide to maintain the blade.

All tools need good maintanance to ensure they stay useful! As far as the cut out just give the edge a quick going over every couple of days and youll prevent any dull areas.

Remember "A bad workman blames his tools"

    Thanks for the comment!

  • well its not like without it its water proof

  • no but a sheath is supposed to keep water and shit like out of it

  • Ya but really no sheath is water proof

  • no but some are better at being water resistant than others

  • yes but not completly

  • Picked mine up for arond $50 and $8 for the up graded shealth. It took awhile to hunt it down. some places just wanted to much for it.

  • Great find at that price!

  • @muskie1976 the reason I ask about the size is because wouldnt you want a bigger heftier knife to batton and make shelter with?

  • Most people who carry this knife into the back country seldom carry one knife. Your right, its size limits it. I always carry a small saw to do most of my big cutting. I actually really like the size of this knife. I dont like carrying a large heavy knife on my side. With this knife I am able to carry it horizonally on my belt, its like its not even there. I love this knife, picked it up for around $50 online and $8 for the up graded shealth.

  • I love the knife design and size, but i would really like a hybrid knife ya know what i mean? something like the C.S. SRK. And yes i do realize you need two knives of two different sizes, one for battoning and one xfor precision cutting. I just with some of the survival knives came with a smaller blade as well

  • Can u give a name of the sight?????

  • @muskie1976

My question to you is why didnt you carry a bigger knife than the seal pup, i mean the blade is what 4.85 in. Also which one broke and which one dulled?

  • I dont get it.. some Seal Pup Elites come with the Kydex sheath and some with the Nylon sheath? Yours is the Kydex?

  • @strangelittleman

If you buy them online you can get the kydex by choice rather than going out and having to buy one, with the chance of not finding the sheath that is taylored to the knife. BUY ONLINE!!!! you have so many more customizing options with better pricing

  • yea you pay extra to get the kydex sheath

  • wow that must of sucked going through that. Are you still in the seals, not to intrude but how long ago was that. Thanks for sharing

  • i just purchased on today for 45 dollars new from a marine's wife

  • Good purchase there!

  • How much did this cost you?

  • $125.00 Canadian ....bit more with the kydex sheath

  • it cost about 110 dollars us

  • @KenneyXBD dude you can get them new online for 65 -100 american with the kydex sheath.

  • Nice review Simon!

  • cheers!

  • how good is sog seal compared to cold steel?

    good review^^

  • Do you mean the SOG brand to the Cold steel brand? I only have the SOG and a Ka Bar in fixed blades and the cold steel mini lawman folder, I think its personal choice, as I understand it the Cold Steel blades have a good record too.

Depends on the use for the knife and of course th price, thanks for the question.

  • i have the cold steel prolite tanto folder, awesome piece of metal. i just wanted to know if there was any knife that is qualitativly comparable to mine, made by sog seal. i dont own a sog seal, thats why im asking ;) so thanks for the answer^^

  • The Seal is a fixed blade, full tang.

But google SOG Aegis Tanto I think this knife is comparable to yours having checked out your knife online.

I like your cold steel actually but its been discontinued.

  • Lets say in the event you ever had to kill an animal, or a human in self defense: which knife would do better? Serrated or Straight Edge?

  • Interesting. Couple of things spring to mind, I imagine it would be better in both cases to have a straight edge as it would reduce the chance of the blade sticking into a bone and you losing he knife. A knife is really designed to stab/thrust/cut multiple times for maximum damage.

Military fighting knives are double edged for this exact reason, to allow an easy withdraw to repeat the attack. But I guess in one of these situations any blade would be better than none at all! great question.

  • Thanks for the reply! Yeah, having any blade in that situation would be better than none at all xD. I guess I'll go with the straight edge because of what you said, also because it looks awesome, and also because i heard wounds from a straight edge knife take longer to heal than wounds from a serrated edge.

  • well i think both sheath look nice, both will do good

  • awsome knife, why not the nylon sheath tho?

  • I like the way you can put the blade in the kydex without a strap and it will still stay firm even upside down. I havent used the nylon sheath but I know it has a small pocket on it which you could use to store something, Id have to get it to compare. I also think at night you could place the knife in the kydex easier if needed. whats your thoughts?

  • What was the name of that video that taught you how to tie that lanyard? I want to put that on my seal pup elite!

  • If you subscribe to this guy "cutlerylover" he has a video on tying lanyards using paracord, or subscribe to me and you can find him through me. thanks

  • Its 550 parachute cord, the cord has 7 nylon strands running through it that can be pulled out to use as thread, snares, fisjing line etc, 550 refers to the strength, it can hold 550lb of weight. comes in lots of colours this is OD green.

    thanks

  • what is the green cord called??

  • why is the straight edge better than serrated?

  • The main reason is ease of sharpening,

imagine yourself in a survival situation and you need to sharpen your edge, The only things around you rocks, stones etc will only be useful on a straight edge making the serrated edge usless.

    thanks for the question.

  • thanks. that helped a lot

  • I agree depending on the useage, I always have my Kbar camp knife with me for the heavy dirty work and the SOG I see as a back up and fine work knife.

I used the SOG for some feathering of wood for my fires and most of my food prep, I also took it with me kyaking as a safety blade and attached to my life jacket with the velcro worked very nicely.

  • Very decent video. Let us know how it worked out after use in the woods.

To me the tip looks VERY thin and prone to snapping. What's your take? Thanks.

  • Really like that knife...Well done..
