I assume there are no photos of THE Willie Brown. Certainly this sounds similar in style to Patton but more sophisticated guitar playing. (or just clearer recording) He also reminds me of Sam Chatmon which would figure I suppose. If this is his only recording then it's a shame but one is better than none.
I like the playing no matter who it is. Very nice way of repetition. I enjoy the singer also. This is a great version to listen to and to respect. Thank you for posting this!
@MyMoppet52 Its Willie Brown who is playing the Blues. I've heard/read He only did one recording. He hanged around with the "Delta King" Charlie Patton in the late 20:th early 30:th, so this is very close to the roots of the Blues !
There are 2 Willy Brown tunes on youtube including Pallet as you mentioned but most people agree it's not the same Willy Brown. I think these were recorded by Lomax in 1941. Very good but ttally different voice and style of playing from the Willy Brown of M & O and Future Blues. Really interesting stuff, especially because the music is so great.
@sharkabilly Yes, I agree Billy ! I found "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor" here on YT, but I'm not sure its the real W Brown ??? However the Music is Great !
@kickingmule "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor" seems to be the same Willie Brown to me. It was recorded in a session that included Son House during the early 1940's. I believe 1942 although the information i came across is sort of confusing when it comes to the actual year. It was at least ten years after the 1930 recordings, so he would sound different, although in the later verses his voice sounds similar to the voice in this song.
I just found out that Willy Brown actually recorded 6 sides (3 78 RPM's) The only one that has been found is the one you have and there is supposedly only 3 known copies in existence. This is what Wikipedia says on the subject: "Brown recorded six sides at a 1930 recording session in Grafton, WI. They were released on three 78 r.p.m. shellac discs of which only one has been found.
Thanks for posting. My brother and I collect 78's as well but I'm not sure how to convert to digital. Are there any more recordings by Willy Brown beside Future Blues and this one?
@sharkabilly Hi Billy ! To my knowledge Willie Brown just recorded once, according to my "Blues-Bible". I convert in a simple way, as an amateur. Here we go : I have an old grammophone on which I can play the 78:rpm records and record it on the taperecorder in the old grammophone kit ! I take the tape and put into a "newer" stereo-kit, from which I connect a cable to my computer. I record the song by a computer-program ! Its done ! However, you loose a bit of the original ! Peace !
@busessuck1 I have a collection of old 78:rpms which I've started to convert to digital form some years ago. I'm not professional and my equipment is like the one in the old days. However, I try to keep the Original sound as much as possible.
@busessuck1 Sorry to say, I'm NOT the original kickingmule record company, which Stefan Grossman had together with some friends some 20 years ago, BUT I ordered a lot of stuff those days. He taught me to play some old Blues.
I have asked Stefan Grossman, if its OK to use this wonderful name of a record company and he answered, Its OK !
Willie Brown was a really important bluesman, player and writer. Great to hear some original stuff of his for a change, Great posting, Urban - as usual. Take it easy, bro.
It's great to hear this Urban. Though I knew of the legendary Willie Brown, somehow I never actually heard him until today (better late than never!). Thanks as always, and peace!
This one is often played accoustic on guitar, without the lyrics, so I do as I always do......uplod the Original !!!
Willie Brown was a very influencial person in the Delta, but unfortunatly he didn't record so much as his pals, like Charlie Patton, Bukka White, Son House, Big Joe Williams, just to name a few.
It's just history, but It's my so called mission here on Youtube, to present the Originals.

B-side is "Future Blues".

@sharkabilly Hi Billy !
Yes you are right !
1) I know Pa 13090, also released by Champion Ch50023.
2) Pa 13099 is mentioned in my "Bible". No trace !
3) Pa 13001 isn't in my "Bible" at all. No trace !
BUT, as a curiousity another song is mentioned : "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor". Found at Library of Congress LC.
I can also read this : "See also Unknown Artists for another possible Willie Brown title".
So, that's the Blues !
Your comment is very much appreciated !

Willie Brown...
He is the still unsolved mystery of Delta-blues!! More formal than Charlie Patton, but he drives real smooth!
That other Paramount will be found one day!!
