  • I just so wish he had lived longer... maybe he could have been helped physically with advancing science. Im so glad he found a contentment in his last years x

  • Is that Jonathan Ross?

  • @AAR51 I would say so.

  • why is there a cow?

  • Check out Lynch´s The Straight Story, unnormal Lynch movie, but very nice locations and off course direction.

  • The reason people remember him or found him extraordinary was because he was...he did not dwell on his deformaties but instead lived an very extraordinary life in spite of it....he was talented and brave ..

  • Did anybody else noticed the cow? If you are a David Lynch fan, you know what I mean.

  • "Well, I would say that if you could manage to get to the end of The Elephant Man without being moved...I don't think you'd be someone I'd want to know" - John Hurt

  • Wow David is looking like a Saint here

  • A man who had the shitty and cruel life he had, and yet he still believes in God, is still kind and sweet to everybody he meets. Odd that they class him as a monster - other than Dr. Treves, John/Joseph Merrick is the only "human" in the film...

  • @andywhorehall I as well. I wrote a paper in College about the book Frankenstein. In my paper, the creature reads poems writen by Joseph Merrick. I've been terrified and attracted to this story for a long time, 30 years, in fact. Be well, Davix.

    Your Friend,

    Peter

  • he might have been a twat with a good business head

  • The real elephant man couldnt talk from what i hear.

  • @veeseee128

Joseph could talk, while it was very difficult for him as he could only move his mouth a little, because of the tumours and bone growth mainly in his upper jaw..Only Treves could understand him completely.

Joseph loved to talk about things which he enjoyed-the theatre, books and nature. He was very eloquent, with a rich and spoke rapidly when he was excited, and he had a great imagination.

He loved romances best. I wish he had found a woman to love him as he dreamed in his heart.

  • @MrsJosephMerrick Where did you find all this information? I heard Mr. Merrick had written an Autobiography, do you know if this is true. You are a bold woman, "MrsJospehMerrick".

  • @wasteland70 I am deeply sincere.

If you want to read about Joseph the best book is definately by Howell and Ford, ''The True Story of the Elephant Man.'' It contains also his short autobiography( humble, but very touching and telling),and Mr Treves Memoirs in full,on which the film was based.(The film was not completely accurate.) From what I read from the Memoirs,I feel that Treves was constantly aware of things which Joseph never could say aloud, but would hint ....

  • @MrsJosephMerrick Will do. It may take me a while, but I'll get the book. Thanks for writing back.

  • @wasteland70

....He really did enjoy romances, and this reveals to me(as it did to Treves) that just below the surface Joseph was a man, with feelings and longings just like any other, but contained...He could only rehearse those words he would have so wished to say to a woman who might have loved him in his imagination.

  • @wasteland70

Just to say also, I hate to call him that, even to write it makes me flinch. and upsets me. After all this time he should called just by his name.

    Thanks

  • what are you talking about LEGIN311? he was one of the sweetest persons ever lived!

  • Not only a courageous film, but David Lynch was a courageous person in bringing this story to a wide audience - the world in fact - as he did, and with obvious dedication. Although sometimes wildly inacurate, this film is very beautiful, disturbing and moving, and has inspired so many people, and I admire him for that.

But so much more, with all my heart, dear Joseph who really lived.

  • Poor guy :l

  • eraserhead and elephant man, is only movies i love from david

  • @directorlog How about The Straight Story? I think that film is amazing.

  • Genius,nothing else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ot: i swear i've seen that chair on some star trek series ep o_o

  • Beautiful film and so well directed, David Lynch is truly a gifted man. This film really made one think about how other people can be so cruel. Sad but inspiring.

  • Fantastic!

  • this wz just ....so cruel if i were him i would feel so sad n i would be horriffly scared of evrything ....how come ppl think this is just funny or somethin like dat if u guys would just stop n imagine u guys were him u guys would change urselfs

  • I first discovered David Lynch in the early 90's with Blue Velvet. I used to love the Dune video game for the Sega Genesis and recently discovered Dune as a movie and was surprised to find out David Lynch directed it. I thought I was a David Lynch fan way before I knew it. Now I find out he made the Elephant man and was REALLY a David Lynch fan way way WAY before I knew it =)

  • SoulreaperBE : Your an idiott! ... we can all learn something from this man ... He should be respected ... and he was always good hearted to others no matter what others did to him ... eventually he was accepted by nay ... and deserved every good thing he ever had

  • this makes me cry when i think of this ='( i feel so bad for that guy. i wish ge didnt have such a life ssniffff

  • anybody else just..adores this movie, is perfect x

  • Human beings are like gold. And to be honest ppl who treats ppl like shit, are well fools. I know i sometime act mean, but only to defend this poor guy. His life is gold. He may look scary, but he has a precious heart

  • truely a great human and i give him my utmost respect.

  • why they gotta put the cow right by the director with a northwestern accent

  • píča 20:54

  • yuhuh

  • what the hell is that cow doing at that guys desk?!?!

  • Probably to freak me out because I just woke up having had a dream about a cow and I was pulling at the cows neck and yelling at people for being mean.

Other than that, there was a period I think in the 80's where it was popular to have cows pictures and objects around.

  • lmao

  • He is in heaven now, God bless him.

    John 3:16

  • If Joseph Merrick were alive today, he would have his own Friday night slot on Channel 5. This movie is superb and emphasises man's inhumanity to man. We could all learn a lot from it.

  • This film is also about the humanity that people do show; it shows that there are good people and that we should reserve our judgments about people and things we don't know.

  • so just what is so wrong about making a film about an unfortunate man who lived a very cruel life and was the subject of gross abuse? this film highlights the attitude of the majority of people in victorian england and doesn't in my opinion set out to sensationalise or exploit the life of john merrick.

  • @chickitakoowan yer i know but this movie will tell kids that have eating dissorder not to wish to be some thing your not this movie tells poeple what it was like then and how hard it was

  • @chickitakoowan the problem with it is that Merrick died a natural life, rather than commiting sucide at the end of the film VERY wrong. suggesting that disabled people feel that they would be better of dead. (i am doing an essay on the elephant man :P)

  • @BeccaSomething I understand where youre coming from - but it is actually ambiguous as to whether he did commit suicide, or just, as Treves said, was so desparate after almost his whole life of not being able to sleep like a ''normal person'' he just lay down ''making the experiment''...I would prefer, as yourself probably, to think it really was just an accident. However, you must remember Joseph knew to sleep in such a way was a risk to his life, and by that time(which the film does....

  • @BeccaSomething ...doesnot show) he was in constant pain &distress, the disease had attacked his body as though he were an old man,his limbs heavy, his head so much so he had to support it.He did not leave his bed til afternoons sometimes...But, please dont judge him like that, because no ones can ever imagine how it was to be him.At least in the end he found a safe home, and died in peace. It could have been much worse.

If you havent, read the bio by Howell and Ford - it will help you.

  • @BeccaSomething he may well have died naturally - i cannot remember everything about the film either but my point was that it successfully highlighted the negative way that society in that period (and still to a lesser extent, still does) viewed and treated people like him. it maybe unfortunate that the film was inaccurate however you have to remember that it's a film and not a documentary. I hope you write a good essay : O

  • oh i seen this i seen that..what fucking prick... well out of order...y didnt u try making a movie on somthing people didnt care about..John Merrick was a HUMAN not a fucking freak or an Animal u shouldnt make a mockery of him.................BANG OUT OF ORDER

  • i hate it when people say that he was just shit. i feel sorry for him. it makes me cry to see him like this. how can people do that?

  • What would you have done in his case? Who are you to jugde this? Live is cruel but nevertheless he made the best of it as many people in the wotld do.

  • u little blonde wench. he did kill himself. n just cos u think ur so perfect, u aint, ur rotten inside. much worse then joseph was on the outside, i hope u rott in hell u dirty fucking donkey sucking freak

  • The Elephant Man is quite shocking as to how deformed he actually is, and its scary =S

  • I know. He was seriosuly deformed. Poor man. imagine how he felt... rejected from society. I'd love to beat the hell out of the people who in tghat time joked and beat him up. Hope they're all paying (Hell) for what they did to him.

    Rest in piece, John Merrick.

  • A classic film and a lesson for us all in how to be compassionate to any poor unfortunate soul born into this world like this....and to be thankful for our own physical normality.
