Maybe the bike box will encourage more cyclist to obey traffic laws and wait for the signal to turn green. Cyclist who obey the laws will get more respect from vehicles. Thanks for making improvements Fort Collins!
ColoradoH2 - If you're not willing to share the road with other legal road users then you should get the fuck off the road. Bicyclists have no business on the sidewalk, they belong on the road. Grow up and wait your goddamn turn.
Please don't reply that bicyclists are a bunch of law breakers. My experience has been that motorists are a bunch of law breakers who operate an extremely dangerous vehicle with very little regard for the safety of others.
Wow! Some neat things happening in Fort Collins for cyclists. I'm not sure what I think of the bike box, but I've always wondered if bikes have full use of lane. It's good to know that they do. (In San Francisco, the bike coalition sells t-shirts that say "Allowed full use of lane" on the back so motorists know exactly why the bike is right there in front of them instead of swerving between parked cars and double parked cars on the side.)
I'm curious to know how many other towns use bike boxes.
Also don't see why the City is bothering, most of the cyclists will run the red first chance they get. Especially if it means they don't have to stop their bike.
@fcmale1 Are you familiar with this intersection? There is a lot of cross-traffic, and not many run that light. How many vehicles actually come to a full and complete stop before proceeding when turning right on red or at a stop sign? Only if there's something in the way. Drivers are no better than cyclists when it comes to not following the rules and etiquette of the road, then getting mad at the other for being on the road in the first place. Can't we all just get along?
Great, really green! Make a couple thousand pound vehicle with a motor running sit and idle longer to wait for a bike to get out of the way. I thought the whole push for riding a bike was to cut emissions. We cut out their vehicles but make the remaining on the road sit and idle longer at intersections to wait for them to move their bike out of the way. Yep, sounds really smart to me. Almost as smart as the platooning the city does with the stop lights. The City is promoting road rage.
Gay. Bikers need to stay the fuck out of the road because they go WAY too slow. Sidewalk or bike lane. Im tired of idiots biking in the middle of the road. Thats why they get ran over.
@ColoradoH2o Wow - That's both incredibly childish and overwhelmingly ignorant. You need to brush up on your bike laws. Are you saying pedestrains need to stay off the sidewalks because they go WAY too slow? The reason bikes get ran over is because you're selfish and angry and a bad driver. Biking on the sidewalk is incredibly dangerous - and this city has gone out of their way to engineer sidewalks for pedestrians - not bikes. Cars need to slow down and chill out - you do, too.
