The story here, I think, is that Dinah trying to capture Bessie's style. Bessie was quite a woman - daring, violent, vulgar, bisexual, loud, etc. Few people can match the power and sadness of Bessie's singing and naturally Dinah couldnt, so she was trying to present that attitude as a jazz singer.

I'm torn between the two,

I agree with your statement regarding the jazzy attitude that Dinah spun on this song (which I love) But I think Bessie definitely owns this song with her raw emotion. This particular version however, lacks emotion altogether... it's just kind of a "flirty" and "pretty" rendition... Which is fine... it loses something for me personally.

That certainly isn't blues piano. Your voice seems "bluesy," much like Dinah Washington, but it clashes with what you're playing. In the recording this is a response too, Dinah smiled at the "right" moments, whereas you sexily smiled through the whole song. I wish you'd chosen to portray more of the maturity of presence that Dinah did (more Dinah, less Beyoncé). I hope you'll take this as constructive criticism: I admire your talent.

hey thanks! i love bessie, i know it's bessie and the version i learned this from was dinah's tribute to bessie. :) I love them both. too bad bessie passed away so young. she hadn't a chance to really progress. i love her song, 'mary jane'--a classic!
