Im glad Im not the only one who noticed the difference. Because I grew up watching the original release on vhs. I thought it was a bit off. I always liked the fire sound effects that Smaug made and when they weren't there on the DVD I thought WTF? This is STUPID!!!!
Dude! I knew there was so many fucking sound effects that were taken out. I miss that fucking movie. Why the hell would they do that. It actually makes the most crucial difference. The dvd is so lame! Could you possibly put the whole vhs movie on here?
Horrible. I was demolished when I finally acquired the DVD and discovered that half the love I had for it was missing (sound effects). At least the music is in fantastic quality, and at the very least the absence of sound effects allows you to hear the music much more easily. But it's still an unforgivable sin to have removed the fantastic sounds.
The DVD release has a clearer quality sound but has horrible mixing. The VHS release has good mixing but crap quality.
The only resort now is to try and force both versions into buttsex combining the better picture and sound of the DVD release with the better sound editing of the VHS version. I'm currently making my own rig of the movie, does anybody have the original sound effects of the VHS cut? And by that I don't mean simply ripped from the VHS cut; I mean the original uncut sound effects.
@PsychopathUltimate I don't think they exist, I believe that is why they are missing from the remastered version. I have hunted down a non-remastered VHS but need a way to get the recording off it, as I wish to put the sound effects back in as well. It makes me so sad to watch it and have it missing so much.
For people who meant well trying to clean up the audio so the voices would be clearer, they took away some of the magic that so many of us grew up with. I remember playing with my friends outside and swashbuckling making those sounds as best as I could. They were all part of the magic of the film. When I showed it to my kids without even having seen the original, before the editing they asked me why it seemed like the movie was missing something. A first year sound engineer could do better.

I actually have the original 1977 version on both VHS and DVD (before 2001) I can't stand the verison without the sound effects...that's what made rankin and bass what they were. Shame on the the 2001 DVD Project crew, they robbed us!
When i got the DVD i was so excited .... till i noticed the door didn't creek in the first scene. When he goes outside with his pipe the door creeks very noticeably. I grew up watching this over and over again and noticed that right away. Very sad-
I once timed my VHS audio from one TV with the movie on the DVD on another TV just so I could have those missing sound effects. I missed that cool whistling noise Smaug made when he dove towards Lake Town. Something that big would make a whistling noise when he dove.
Would you mind seeding it for a few weeks after you hit 100%? I am (and have been) in the process of moving 2500 miles from where I used to live and consequently my internet connection and file server have had only intermittent web access. It's only by chewing gum and bailing wire that I'm able to seed it to you right now.
Well there's a post about the audio inconsistencies on the wikipedia post for the hobbit, but to my knowledge no one has yet contacted warner to complain. If you're a die hard fan and you want the original sounds, I'd suggest downloading the hi-fi hobbit DVD.
This really is very bogus just on the principal, and the fact that EVERY change I noticed was for the worst in terms of effect to the audience. Smaug's death/ attack on laketown scene is particularly ruined by the changes.
I agree with you. I have my own theories as to why the sound effects may have been removed from the DVD release, but I'd love to hear a definitive answer from Warner Home Video.
Yes it's possible. I'd suggest you go torrent the hi-fi hobbit a dvd where I've already done that and then spliced the original audio with the DVD-quality video. Best of both worlds
That's sort of what I did, but I spliced DVD quality video on top of the original audio. It took about two weeks of full time work though. Just go download the hi-fi hobbit DVD.
Thanks for this clip. I own the movie on DVD and I now feel really ripped off now. But until Peter Jackson comes and makes a live action version, this DVD will still have to do for the momment, despite the sound and effects flaws!
Thanks for confirming my belief that those who messed with this classic's audio should be castrated! Why would they fuck with the audio? For what fucking reason?! This isn't the first time: JAWS was also altered on DVD! All the dramatic effects were replaced! Why? Bad enough they play JAWS to death on cable! Why must they fuck with the audio?! Next they'll remove the JAWS theme music! Assholes! Leave these works of art alone! Long Live Tolkien and Spielberg!
Thank you, friend. You just saved me from making the terrible mistake of buying a watered-down version of this classic!
On a slightly different note, my little sister recently got the dvd version of the animated film 'The Last Unicorn', and as I watched it, I realized that they did the same exact thing as they did here! Not only cutting out some of the sounds and music, but changing characters' dialog aswell!
Yeah, I'll never buy the official DVD if it sounds this bad. I'll look for your "hi fi Hobbit" version. Thanks for informing the fans about this huge difference in the quality of the DVD!
yeah what bull crap. what where they thinking?! those sound effects are a classic part of the movie. Why would they ever want to mess around with that kind of stuff. Like why the hell did they get rid of all the "Sting" sound effects. that whole part of the movie becomes boring. And the part with Smog. Oh my god!!! The fire and Arrow sounds are off??!! WTF! IT's almost as if the DVD version is in mono. they just left out one of the speakers or something. That's just horrible.
Yeah it was really bad. I'd guess they did it because those sounds might have been deemed too violent for a kids movie. You know.. parents afraid that their kids will reenact those scenes and hurt their friends etc. Anyway, have you downloaded the hi-fi hobbit with the original audio?
I had a taped version that I recorded from TV like...20 years ago. The quality was horrible so I ended up ebaying a retail copy of the vhs for like $120 and then spending an unfathomable # of hours dubbing the audio from that tape over the DVD release video. Search for "hi fi hobbit" at isohunt dot com and download the torrent if you want it.
The best part is when Smaug says, "WELL?" Not only is it a totally different person, but it was misplaced on the video/audio timeline.
Don't they test their crap before they release it?
It's amazing how much sound can make a difference. I miss the VHS version.

Is it too terrible to admit that the second recording is easier to listen to than the first?

@jamesgaspard Nah, and while you're at it... Nickleback makes timeless music, and Paris Hilton is a first rate thespian.

Not just the sound effects were screwed up on the DVD/VHS.
You can also notice in the clip of Smaug that the bowman's voice is nearly inaudible at several points.
Worse still, even though not shown in these clips here, the DVD/VHS have Thorin's dying words to Bilbo COMPLETELY INAUDIBLE!
Seriously, what the HELL is wrong with the producers that they totally fucked up this version?
Would it have been too much to ask for them to simply transfer the original hi-fi version's audio directly?
Damn!
