  • Couldn't be better. It's not just the voice - she's an amazing singer.

  • Talento extraordinario y potente VOZ,qué maravilla!!!

  • God gave her beautiful voice.

  • I'm very sorry. In place of "O" goes "Oh". "Oh mi papito querido..." and "Oh Dios, quiero..." (h after O).

  • What a good singer she is. Excellent the idea to add CC to the video. This is a possible spanish version, in case you want to add it: O mi papito querido Me gusta, es bello, bello ¡Voy a ir a Porta Rossa a comprar el anillo! ¡Sí, sí, quiero ir! y si le amase en vano, iría al Ponte Vecchio, pero para tirarme al Arno! Me preocupo y me atormento! ¡O Dios, quiero morir! ¡Papito, piedad, piedad! ¡Papito, piedad, piedad!
  • Gracias por publicar este video!

  • I listened to 11 versions of O Mio Babbino Caro on youtube. Only Kiri Te Kanawa youched my heart and filled my eyes with tears....

  • Her crescendi go ballistic..!

  • Listen Kiri is to have a fresh encounter with angels.

  • I saw her sing this in Santa Barbara in a small theatre. I will never forget her voice.

  • Moved me to tears. Simply beautiful. Whatever problems you have just listen to this and they all seem to melt away. Loved it!

  • Lovely dress.--- by Gary Dahms

  • beautiful!

  • What a beautiful song, as well as Kiri...

  • Awesomeness that is Kiri

  • I think she is fab!!, however I get very cross at the way she criticises other artists, kiri dont be threatened, let others have a go as well........

  • Bellissimo!

  • Kiri Te Kanawa on her best ever.

She sing real beautiful here. Agree that this must be the best song performence ever so far

  • I can't claim to be very "musically literate," but I don't think you really have to be an expert to know that the people who attended this concert were in the presence of greatness.

  • This is my all time favorite performance of Kiri Te Kanawa.

Che la canzone romantica italiana! Solo gli italiani possono essere così romantici!!

Grazie, Kiri and composer Giocomo Puccini and librettist Giovacchino Forzano!

From the opera called Gianni Schicchi.

    Grazie, Grazie!!!! Meraviglioso!!!!

  • superba performance cantata con cuore e sentimento. brava !!

  • If I were there and had the money, I'd definitely give her two dozen roses for this! awesome!

  • Her voice is so pure, she is an Angel of Music

  • Her voice is so pure, she is an angel of music

  • Beautiful heartfeft singing as it should from a 15 year old girl. Kiri at her best!

  • Well, that isn't at all what we were led to expect

  • Just out of curiosity, did you phrase that comment in such a way to reflect Maggie Smith's very similar line in A Room with a View, the movie in which Ms. Kanawa's version of this song appears?

Not trying to be a smart ass, just curious if you were a fellow fan :P

  • That's totally where it came from :o)

Not sure if it makes sense otherwise! lol

  • Oh yes, and I am a fan. ;o)

Mind you, if Maggie was expecting a south facing view which included the Arno, the cathedral, and Giotto's tower, she was always going to be dissapointed cos it aint possible!

Sorry, who's being a smart ass now! lol

  • It is an unique and perfect voice

  • I think this is the right interpretation, a delicate song for a father from a little girl in love :)

  • This aria so suits Kiri's voice. Kiri's voice floats like no other. She may not have the clarity of Maria Stader's singing or the drama of Maria Callas, but in this piece, I think there are few better.

  • The look on the conductors face, when she has finished singing, says it all......sheer bliss !

  • Beautiful and precise. Full of emotion!

  • I always like to comment on Kiri . She has a glorious voice/instrument and puts it to the utmost use The power and focus of that lush tone all beautifully supported whether she is singing on top or the bottom notes .If you are a novice to soprano artistry and hear an aria or song first sung by Dame Kiri, you my friend, may be spoiled. .This is what very few great singers/voices will do to you!!

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • I was watching "Room with a View" at the cinema over 20 years ago, and during a scene (groups of English people picnicing in an overgrown field in the unaccustomed warmth of the Italian sun) this most divine voice floated over it all. I was stunned, and stayed behind to watch the credits to find out who it was. It was Kiri, singing this song! As a NZer by adoption I was so proud, and that was the moment that I became an opera lover. Tino pai, Dame Kiri!

  • "Simply Sublime. When she sings this I always get tears in my eyes - and I don't have to even know what the words mean... As for the discussion below as to her diaphram and "size" - compare Te Kanawa's singing to the slim Hayley Westenra's rendition. There is no comparison whatsoever.

  • I'm here because of the haunting of Netrebko. This was a masterpiece, but with a few mistakes, as all live recordings. Te Kanawa is wonderful in the high notes though

  • Absolutely sublime! Where's my hankie?

  • Maybe it's just the dress......

......... but she seems to have very, very wide shoulders - not seen in many females to have shoulders so wide.

I am guessing that having a wider frame would enable a person with an operatic voice to support their voices more, but as a novice in my knowledge of opera - I may be wrong. That's why I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on such matters for me.

    Thank you.

And .... I think she has one of the most wonderful soprano voices I know of!

  • It's just the dress. If you look at her more recent pictures you'll see that she's actually quite slim-framed (or the most, moderate). Not anorexic-skinny, of course, but definitely not wide-framed :)

  • Support of the voice comes from strong abdominal and intercostal muscles (those muscles that you feel when you imitate a hearty Santa laugh), not whether a singer is slim or wider-framed.

  • just close Your eys and listen

  • Terrible dress, Wonderful voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • As divine as Callas even different.

  • She looks like a marshmallow peep in that dress.

  • lmao!!!!!!!!! she and her voice are beautiful though.

  • Yeah, she kinda does. The dress seems more like a costume than a gown. Makes her look extra-wide too.

But hey, she sounds great, and that's what really matters here!

  • perfection

  • il testo è "...se l'amassi invano"

Grazie a Giacomo Puccini...per quello che ha dato all'opera e per quello che ha dato all'Italia...

  • ...se l'amassi in darno...

  • @xsemprecrociato è "se l'amassi INDARNO"!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • bravissima!"

  • This was the song for me... said my voice mentor. O Mio Babbino...How my teacher loved hearing me sang this magnificent piece.

  • Awesome Voice

  • The QUEEN of opera!!!

  • @TruthLightSeeker she is a wonderful opera singer and i loove her soo much but montserrat caballe is the QUEEN of opera

  • nice dress... ;)

    but beautiful singing.

  • My Dear Friend KIRI TE KANAWA:

Glorious Voice! Beautiful! You are the best for me!

    Be Happy!

Be with God, so, He is too within yourself!

Much Peace! Much Christic Love! Much Light!

  • She's the best!!

  • Beautiful singing...and a great backup band! Charles Dutoit with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. I recall playing with the orchestra as a sub in the fiddle section when they did a gala concert with Te Kanawa - this might be it! That would place it about 1986.

  • Da gusto escuchar una voz tan melodiosa y magnifica

  • Magnificent. To be direct, this song captured my attention as part of a trailer for a video game.. it haunted me and I researched it until I found Puccini. Ah, Puccini. How many young people nowadays realize how great his work is? How many singers have a unique way of expressing his work through their art?

  • There's no-one better than Kiri on this particular number... She totally dominates it!

  • this is vocal perfection

  • really AMAZING!

  • She is one of the few women who still possess the old "bel canto" sound. Truly amazing.

  • tRUE, HORROBLE DRESS... GLORIOUS VOICE!!!!!

  • Spectacularly moving. No one sings it as well. What Daddy could say no to such an angel?

  • This, together with "Dove Sono" and "Porgi Amor", is her signature song. Absolutely stunning. I'm learning this aria now, and I wish I could sing it as freely as her!

  • Her rendition of this aria is still the best for me! ;-)

  • Nobody sings this like she does !

  • This must be from the 80's...that dress is awful. It makes her look heavy, and we all know that is not an adjective one uses in reference to this particular singer! She is still singing this song, 20-odd years later, and she sounds fabulous! Brava Dame Kiri!
