What a good singer she is. Excellent the idea to add CC to the video. This is a possible spanish version, in case you want to add it: O mi papito querido Me gusta, es bello, bello ¡Voy a ir a Porta Rossa a comprar el anillo! ¡Sí, sí, quiero ir! y si le amase en vano, iría al Ponte Vecchio, pero para tirarme al Arno! Me preocupo y me atormento! ¡O Dios, quiero morir! ¡Papito, piedad, piedad! ¡Papito, piedad, piedad!
I can't claim to be very "musically literate," but I don't think you really have to be an expert to know that the people who attended this concert were in the presence of greatness.
Just out of curiosity, did you phrase that comment in such a way to reflect Maggie Smith's very similar line in A Room with a View, the movie in which Ms. Kanawa's version of this song appears?
Not trying to be a smart ass, just curious if you were a fellow fan :P
Mind you, if Maggie was expecting a south facing view which included the Arno, the cathedral, and Giotto's tower, she was always going to be dissapointed cos it aint possible!
This aria so suits Kiri's voice. Kiri's voice floats like no other. She may not have the clarity of Maria Stader's singing or the drama of Maria Callas, but in this piece, I think there are few better.
I always like to comment on Kiri . She has a glorious voice/instrument and puts it to the utmost use The power and focus of that lush tone all beautifully supported whether she is singing on top or the bottom notes .If you are a novice to soprano artistry and hear an aria or song first sung by Dame Kiri, you my friend, may be spoiled. .This is what very few great singers/voices will do to you!!
I was watching "Room with a View" at the cinema over 20 years ago, and during a scene (groups of English people picnicing in an overgrown field in the unaccustomed warmth of the Italian sun) this most divine voice floated over it all. I was stunned, and stayed behind to watch the credits to find out who it was. It was Kiri, singing this song! As a NZer by adoption I was so proud, and that was the moment that I became an opera lover. Tino pai, Dame Kiri!
"Simply Sublime. When she sings this I always get tears in my eyes - and I don't have to even know what the words mean... As for the discussion below as to her diaphram and "size" - compare Te Kanawa's singing to the slim Hayley Westenra's rendition. There is no comparison whatsoever.
I'm here because of the haunting of Netrebko. This was a masterpiece, but with a few mistakes, as all live recordings. Te Kanawa is wonderful in the high notes though
......... but she seems to have very, very wide shoulders - not seen in many females to have shoulders so wide.
I am guessing that having a wider frame would enable a person with an operatic voice to support their voices more, but as a novice in my knowledge of opera - I may be wrong. That's why I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on such matters for me.
Thank you.
And .... I think she has one of the most wonderful soprano voices I know of!
It's just the dress. If you look at her more recent pictures you'll see that she's actually quite slim-framed (or the most, moderate). Not anorexic-skinny, of course, but definitely not wide-framed :)
Support of the voice comes from strong abdominal and intercostal muscles (those muscles that you feel when you imitate a hearty Santa laugh), not whether a singer is slim or wider-framed.
Beautiful singing...and a great backup band! Charles Dutoit with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. I recall playing with the orchestra as a sub in the fiddle section when they did a gala concert with Te Kanawa - this might be it! That would place it about 1986.
Magnificent. To be direct, this song captured my attention as part of a trailer for a video game.. it haunted me and I researched it until I found Puccini. Ah, Puccini. How many young people nowadays realize how great his work is? How many singers have a unique way of expressing his work through their art?
This, together with "Dove Sono" and "Porgi Amor", is her signature song. Absolutely stunning. I'm learning this aria now, and I wish I could sing it as freely as her!
This must be from the 80's...that dress is awful. It makes her look heavy, and we all know that is not an adjective one uses in reference to this particular singer! She is still singing this song, 20-odd years later, and she sounds fabulous! Brava Dame Kiri!
Couldn't be better. It's not just the voice - she's an amazing singer.

This is my all time favorite performance of Kiri Te Kanawa.
Che la canzone romantica italiana! Solo gli italiani possono essere così romantici!!
Grazie, Kiri and composer Giocomo Puccini and librettist Giovacchino Forzano!
From the opera called Gianni Schicchi.
Grazie, Grazie!!!! Meraviglioso!!!!
