I always like to comment on Kiri . She has a glorious voice/instrument and puts it to the utmost use The power and focus of that lush tone all beautifully supported whether she is singing on top or the bottom notes .If you are a novice to soprano artistry and hear an aria or song first sung by Dame Kiri, you my friend, may be spoiled. .This is what very few great singers/voices will do to you!!

I was watching "Room with a View" at the cinema over 20 years ago, and during a scene (groups of English people picnicing in an overgrown field in the unaccustomed warmth of the Italian sun) this most divine voice floated over it all. I was stunned, and stayed behind to watch the credits to find out who it was. It was Kiri, singing this song! As a NZer by adoption I was so proud, and that was the moment that I became an opera lover. Tino pai, Dame Kiri!

......... but she seems to have very, very wide shoulders - not seen in many females to have shoulders so wide.

I am guessing that having a wider frame would enable a person with an operatic voice to support their voices more, but as a novice in my knowledge of opera - I may be wrong. That's why I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on such matters for me.

It's just the dress. If you look at her more recent pictures you'll see that she's actually quite slim-framed (or the most, moderate). Not anorexic-skinny, of course, but definitely not wide-framed :)

Support of the voice comes from strong abdominal and intercostal muscles (those muscles that you feel when you imitate a hearty Santa laugh), not whether a singer is slim or wider-framed.
