@CapricornDavo Hollywood politics, same reason Julie Andrews was not cast in My Fair Lady, or Cady Huffman in The Producers. Broadway stars, even Tony Winning ones aren't enough of a box office draw, unless the mainstream film audience knows who they are
Ethel Merman, like most Broadway performers who create a role, believed she owned the part of Madam Rose. Although Mervyn LeRoy reportedly saw her in the show numerous times, it was never likely that she would recreate the role on film, given her lackluster track record as a movie draw , i.e. Call Me Madam & There's No Business Like Show Business. Also, she had earlier lost the title role in Annie Get Your Gun, another role she created on stage - first to Judy Garland and then to Betty Hutton.
@carol3793 partly, rosalind sang mr goldstone, together wherever we go, and half of roses turn. Everthing else (which is the majority) was sung by lisa kirk.
I don't get it. I have the original cast recording of Wonderful Town. Roz won a Tony for that. Her singing was fine. Merman didn't win the Tony for Gypsy, but Roz won it for Wonderful Town. And that's *Broadway* singing-- filling up a theater with your voice 8 performances a week-- in the days before actors were mic'd.
What happened to Roz's voice in the ensuing 10 years? She's probably the only musical Tony winner besides Angela Lansbury who had her singing voice dubbed in a movie.
What happened was she took on a role that was not written for her. Bernstein composed "Wonderful Town" specifically for her vocal limitations. She can sing, but she just can't handle vocal jumps. Every time the melody takes a leap, she painfully sharps it. Those pitch problems could be corrected today - but back then, the technology didn't exist. Too bad.
in her book Roz said that when she put her hat on and stuck the hat pin in she stuck it into her head and kept on singing until they called cut.....THEN. she started screaming.......THAT my friends is SHOW BIZ....god bless her!
Yes, this version of GYPSY was inferior ... but Ros, to me, was the best Rose of them all. No, she's not much of a singer. But she plays the CHARACTER, not HERSELF.
@AtLastOnTheGround you must not have seen Tyne Daly's performance because it was by far the most superior of all. Unfortunately as strong of an actress Roz was, her vocals could never allow her to be the best Rose, remember it is a musical after all
Roz Russell was a great actress and the finished product was excellent. I also saw Tyne Daly years ago on stage in Houston, she was also excellent.

@irvinemuscle
If the finished product was excellent, it was because they removed her singing voice!

.
Actually, it's exactly the same tempo as the film. Roz recorded this track after filming was completed, lip-synching to her own footage.

I adore Roz Russell, but she struggled with the songs. Lisa Kirk has been deleted from Youtube by whom?
She did the the vocals for most of the songs in the 1962 film - and was brilliant. Roz delivered the goods perfectly..... but with some help.

Not n her book - she devotes only three paragraphs to this film, and I've included all of it in the notes for this clip.

@BetteDavisMimic yeah, that's definitely not in her book.

I love Rosalind's deep, raspy voice--- it's very attractive, and one of the reasons i have a girl crush on her!! <3

ouch. There's a good reason why they dubbed this woman. If Lucy had been smart, she would have insisted they do it with her in Mame.
