Oh my goodness, what I wouldn't give to jump into the video and snag all the dresses and shoes! I wear 1940's fashions daily but I've nothing so lovely as those outfits yet, I must learn to sew. :)
Well in those days people were expected to behave like human beings and strive for a level of civility and good-behavior. The fashion, the manners and the manner of speech shows this. But . . . the world has changed and in that regard, it has not changed for the better. Vulgar behavior seems to be rewarded nowadays, and that includes fashion, manners and you guessed it, manner of speech. It is a shame and I am so sickened by it.
@ichigomentos i'd rather have artificially proper than vulgar like so many of the women on mtv. you'd never see a woman's underwear hanging out in the 40's, or a guy sagging his pants. personally, i'd rather be spared those two particular experiences.
@xrowanbraex Well, women primarily held down the jobs during WWII, especially all of the new war jobs, so the male employees could serve. Once the troops came home, campaigns encouraging women to quit their jobs so that returning servicemen could work again were rampant.
lol, just the thing a girl should be wearing when her beau proposes..unfortunately, her less pretty friend will have to settle being a third wheel.
and as a stay at home wife and mother I know how to boil a good many things. And how to clean the pots and pans...you should get out more, there's loads of us.
Ok, that noise wasn't actually nice, but it's a lovely video and more than fashion, it shows what women were supposed to live like and the things they should pay attention to. It's like "Oh my God, you're so lucky someone wants to marry you". It's weird to see it for real. It's good though.
I wanted so badly to hear what they were saying but I had to watch muted because of the ringing, but beautiful dresses and colors! Thanks a million for posting this.
This is a special gem, as in the early 1940s, the Bemberg company (with a German background) had been seized as 'enemy property' by the Office of Alien Property (OAP). I assume it was 'image restoration' for the Bemberg name and product. Restore confidence in the American consumer. Hey, fabric rartioning was finally over and hopefully the beau back from the war! Girls and women wanted to dress up again and have fun!
Wonderful, this film gem from the 'Victory days' of 1946. "No skimping of fabrics this season!"(at 8:18) reflects the sigh of relief of many women: the amount of material used was copious again (WW2 was won, rartions were over!), yet wedged shoes were still praised as 'smart' and several models wear snoods. Look for Dior influence (New Look) can be found (striped playdress at 3:07) and some of the evening gowns.
I love the women of the 1920-50's, they knew how to be independent and self sufficient. Most women now can't boil water! I learned to cook and sew and other domestics at 10 yrs old and I am a guy! Sorry guys but if you have to depend on a woman and women have to depend on a guy, you are in for a long haul!
you can thank the womans movement for that. The feminists made woman feel that domestic chores(the very things we as men and woman should know as basic survival skills) were to be spurned and left to grandma. they made us feel as if climbing the corporate ladder was more important than knowing how to sew, cook or clean. so, now, woman cant sew, cant cook and god knows they cant clean.
@rainydaywoman1957 I like what your thinking. Funny thing is that I can do the basic survival skills better than other woman can (apart for the sewing of course) and I really hate the "climbing the corporate ladder thing" too. Women nowadays act too much like men if not, dirty sluts (Girls, you can kill me for saying that! -___-)
Agreed!!! things that women do were exclusive to women only and that goes the same for men but now it's mixed up. Nothing wrong with today but if only women kept being feminine while still be as modern as today's generation such as liking what guys like or doing stuff that they do.
I hate what they call "fashion" today. It's as if clothes are getting shorter and smaller. This might end up as "being naked" as the latest fashion ;p
40s looks inspired a photo shoot for Aug issue of Vogue Magazine, pictures by Steven Meisel....they borrowed some of my 40s hats (hoping they make it through all editing & I get to see them in print!). We may see some 40s glamour return!
The American Bemberg Association sponsored this film...Bemberg is the best quality Rayon, which is a natural fiber (made of wood pulp) synthesized into yarn.
Fashion of this period is incredibly sensual. Don't dream about the past - wear the past now... what's stopping you? Inside the girl shuffling along the street - hands in trouser pockets, is a fem bursting to get out. A lot of girls today are sexless troopers - dedicated followers of naff fashion. Have the confidence to express your sexuality. Walk down the street and turn heads. Reclaim what is rightfully yours (a wiggle when you walk and a giggle when you talk is optional).
yes, what is wrong with us? Today's clothes on the average woman are either jeans and a hoodie or horribly plunging tawdry numbers that are not attractive. In the 40s and back the clothes were so pretty and feminine and still sexy. my only problem is that im not built for these clothes, but i certainly appreciate them :)
Hey!...what's wrong with women dressing as men?? Of course, I'm being sarcastic, here. Give me the 'old' girls anyday, when compared with the 'girl snatched from some council estate' that we have to endure, nowadays. Yeah, alright, they are ok, but they REALLY lack the 'Je ne sais Quoi' of yesteryear. Can anyone explain this anomaly? I mean; they're the same gene-pool material, but what's missing???
For me I wish there was time with values of the 1950's and some of the benefits of today such as less racial prejudice, intergration, internet, air conditioning, some t.v shows made after the 50's and some movies too.
Any night in London's west end you'll see girls glammed up and loving it. But you don't have to be glam to look good. Personally, I find a girl whos been seduced by her own femininity highly attractive, I guess that's why women and their clothes from the 40s/50s are so appealing - femininity is beautiful, no doubt about it. I think most females would prefer to dress fem, but only if every other woman did as well. Expressing your nature should be the most natural thing in the world.
Finding a time machine is probably impossible, but it is possible to do something against the ugliness of the modern world: choose NOT to dress and act that way yourself! No one can forbid you to adopt full 1940s dress if you like it, no one is allowed to keep you from being courteous. If those of us who have a love for the saner adn more beautiful parts of history refuse to live a "modern" life, no one can make us!
If you go onto my channel, you will see that I am a very old fashioned. So I tend to search for clothing from the eras before the 60's because I love them.

they were in the '4Os,obviously you wouldn't like them, they are from another times!,the people used to like those, probably if they could see our today's clothing they would black out, and tell us we are just rude by wearing pants,it's too unconventional for those times :|
They are beautiful but keep in mind because of rationing not everybody dressed like that. Some fashions are pretty now. I heard that girdles back then were uncomfortable.
Why can't fashion today be like this! Clothes that wear ment to fit a women. So much detail to all that they were wearing! No cookie cutter look back then, everything was one of a kind :)
@PiecesOfRainbow7 Yes, especially when they're talking about using more fabrics. I would assume the war was over by this time. Also, you can start to see some 1950's influence on the clothes.
Producer Roland Reed later went into television, producing "MY LITTLE MARGIE" {with Hal Roach, Jr.}, "THE STU ERWIN SHOW" {aka "TROUBLE WITH FATHER"}, "ROCKY JONES, SPACE RANGER", and other filmed programs during the early '50s...
