Just found out about the death of Whitney Houston and it put me in the mood for some soulful music to mourn to. Thank you to all the wonderful soul singers in history. Your talents and expressions of love and inspiration gives humanity something to strive for. No one does it better. Thank you.
You kno wat as a little girl i grow up on listen to donny hathaway my grandmother us to play a few of hits songs but anyways till this day he still stick with me every time i hear his music RIp donny and my granny r.i.p
This is a real beautiful song. one would cry if they listen to this song while simultaneosuly thinking about his life. He was very troubled, though he was a good person and a good artist. A great artist. I read somewhere that after he had just finished recording this song in the studio, he told the people behind the glass to play back the whole song. And as he heard his own voice on the overhead, he began to cry. That broke my heart. He was very sain but was deeply depressed. I love him.
@winterland84 i completely agree! someone i loved very deeply took his own life to the surprise of everyone around him. whenever i listen to donny i think of him. its strange how music can hit everyone differently. im so thankful for donnys genius on days like this!
@m0sas That is true. Thank you. I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I think that we as people automatically will perceive that the outside of a person is the sole person. We care very little about what is going on on the inside. Rarely is it allright to judge a person's life on the outside. However, it is ALWAYS allright to look more at the inside, too. Take care and thanks again.
I don't care who tries to sound like him...I don't care who was influenced by him. This man's creativity and sound will never be duplicated. Voice can't even be imitated and was a beast with the electric piano. Could've been widly recognized as one of the greatest vocalist of all time if he could've stayed alive. Soul music pioneer.
When I was a younger man, this song reminded me that it was my obligation to "keep my self respect and my "manly pride"...I listen to the choices that kids have today and my heart just breaks...They have neither anchors nor rudders and no "brave songs" to sing.
@OfficialStarrbarry Young man. Please, I implore you. Do not sample this song. There is a true meaning to this song. I feel that you will take from the meaning. I can personally understand why you might want to do what you're thinking. But listen to the words of this song. This is a song about freedom and liberation. A rallying cry to all people to just love each other and lift each other up when we're down. Those of us that grew up listening to this song would love for it to remain intact.
@Trill104 That may be. Either way, he wanted to be free. I just hate the way that his freedom came about. The world lost a great talent to this condition.
@IRONMANHONDO87 Lol are you joking..? There are thousands of people who are gonna sample this song anyway. I understand you, but that cant stop me.. It's one mans opinion. Maybe you won't like it and 1 million people will. Think about it.
@OfficialStarrbarry I have. You're wrong. You be doing a disservice to those of us that loved Donny Hathaway bought his music, paid to see him in concert, and mourned when we heard the news that he took his own life. One million people will be wrong if they approve of you bastardizing a true classic. You're showing your lack of respect for one of the greats in this industry.
Donny Hathaway was a genius, his voice was so blessed by God Almighty. Thank God for blessing us to be able to have it and listen to it, have you ever thought that even though his body is no longer here his spirit is and a great talent like this is never lost, it just keep blessing us forever. Love never dies, if you don't believe it just listen to Donny...............
People need to listen to some real fucken music. Donny Hathaway isnt just a musician, he is a true Artist. Music is losing some of its quality. We can't keep allowing it to die out.
soave come tutti i volti che scorrono nelle mente e che hanno contribuito al riconoscimento dei diritti di un popolo che chiede solo rispetto e amore...
Does anyone else eyes well up when hearing this song? Powerful music, very good music, the music that I and many of you would love to hear today. Keep good music alive everybody!!!!!
I saw this man at Lincoln Center in the 70's....one of the best shows I've ever seen. I'm still feeling the loss of one of the greatest talents that ever lived. Donny is in a category all his own, and none can compare.
Donny was the epitome of a musician despite battling a horrible menatl illness. My Uncle, a famous jazz musician, Bill Evans dedicated a song to Donny on his last album before his life ended prematurely at 51 yrs old. Donny's music touched Bill deeply. There will never be another Donny. Props to his wonderful wife.
Is there a video online of him singing this live? Just out of curiosity. :) I'm absolutely in love with this song...my heart melts, my whole gets chills, and the back of my eyes get hot from holding in tears.
A modern day standard, words that resonate the world over and universal ideas that will outlast any of us. thank you to the genius of Donny Hathaway, thank you.
