If it's not crunchy, it's done, at least for me. You can cook it longer and add more water to soften it up, but it sounds like you know what you're doing. How was it?
thank you so much. i am off today and really in the mood for some oatmeal. My wife usually makes it, but she is working. also the peanut butter is a nice touch.
@Kaboose786 Steel cut oats are the least processed as they are whole oats that have been sliced. Regular rolled oats are whole oats that have been steamed and pressed. Quick oats have been pre-cooked, dried and rolled - more processing.
Great point you made at the beginning about the oats just being cut and NOT steamed or pressed. This would lead me to believe that they are processed less and more natural? So if we were to take this a step further, what are they like when they are harvested in there whole form? Do they just harvest them, cut them and then packaged to eat? Why are rolled oats steamed and pressed down anyway? surprised you put raisins and WALNUTS in the boiling water, wondering what that does to the flavor?
@fmbighair YES the oats that are cut have less done to them than rolled oats. You can purchase whole oats. They need to be soaked and cooked quite a whole. Not easy to digest. I believe that the heat on the walnuts and raisins improves their flavor. You can add them raw if you prefer.
@cookusinterruptus ok, I understand. So you can actually buy whole oats that haven't been rolled OR cut at all? I'll have to look for this. I was just wondering about the walnuts/raisins cuz I was concerned they would get watered down since you add them with the oats before the water gets absorbed?
May I ask a favor? How do you do a 2 camera shoot that I see in your videos? And is it hard to do? I'd appreciate it if you respond, my email is mikefixac@gmail.com

What a hilarious family and concept for cooking videos. Poor Jane burned her mouth tho :( If you really like steel cut oats, put 1 cup of oats, 4 cups of water and whatever else you like in the crockpot over night. Viola! Great for breakfast. :)
What do you think of these new "Quick Cook Steel Cut Oats" such as the one by McCann's or the one I just bought by Trader Joe's? They look just like steel cut oats but you can cook in them in less time and in the microwave. I know you're not a fan of the microwave even though there isn't a sufficient amount of evidence to prove it's unsafe... but what do you think of this kind of steel cut oat? Any good? My problem is that I don't eat with water, I eat them with milk. Boiling
I haven't tried the McCann's or the Trader Joe's quick cut oats. I am suspicious! Do you like them? I'm old school but I'll try them soon and get back.
every time somebody recommends using peanut butter it sounds gross until you try it. I remember someone told me to eat banana and pb sandwich and i almost got sick thinking about it until i tried it. So good.
I just caught this @ random..will check to see I may get steel cut oats at a bulk place and of course add organic peanut butter might try soy or almond milk to see what it might taste like thanks for sharing!
I just had some! Bananas, frozen blueberies, fresh strawbeRries from the garden, raisins and walnuts. I swear when we did the video steel cut oats had recently been 98cents a pound, in bulk. Now it's more, but still cheap. $1.28/lb.? Does that sound right?
I tried something new. Steel cut oats cooked in a solar cooker. They are the best I have ever tasted. What I did was basically cook them about 4 hours until they were done, then reheated them in the solar cooker the next day with no refrigerator in between. I cooked them without the reflectors so the temp. stayed at 160-190 F. That way I didn't have to do much except move the oven a couple of times. I made a huge pot...5 servings which is 1 plus 1/4 cup dry. Better than nuking.
Not everyone posts, but I have been getting schooled bya few friends who are part of the true steel cut oats cult. So there may be an "advanced steel cut oats" video coming up. I stand by the way we did it, even with the peanut butter option. But here's what I'm learning. Cook it on a lower heat and stir as little as possible. When you stir use the handle end of the wood spoon. And a portion of that water can be milk. I tried it. 3 water to one milk. Fluffy. Awesome.
I heard somewhere recently that microwave ovens strengthen our immune system. I'm not sure I believe that, but this recipe does sound tasty and convenient. And I suppose you only have to measure one time if you use the same bowl.
Wow. I am generally skeptial of microwave ovens. I feel that the jury is out on their long-term effects. Like "non-stick" skillets, I think that their affect will prove to cause more harm than good. If you have a reference to the comment you made I would love to see it!
I tried the butterscotch approach this morning. The smell made my day. I heard from an old man on the ferry that he did that too, and used half milk and half water. I tried that too. Too much luxury for my taste. Not good for a lactose intolerant person either. But I'm down with the sautee...
I make mine in the microwave using 1/2 cup of the oats, 2 cups of water which I don't need to measure cause it just fills the bowl, nuke for 6 min. then let it set overnight. In the morning, I stir and reheat for exactly 3 min. on high and they are perfect. They never boil over and the whole process takes me less than a minute of preparation. Since I eat 6 servings of oats a day, I've become an expert at cooking them. I don't use salt either.
You eat 6 servings of oats a day? I want to hear more about that! I hope it isn't that full bowl full 6 times a day. That would put me to shame. That would be a lot of oats. But since I can't see you, who knows? Maybe you're Mr. Ed. I'm imagining that you dip into that daily serving 6 times. Do tell. I want to know. Also. Do you refridgerate the oats at night, or just let them sit out? Do you eat it straight, or add stuff? "Here here" on the no salt...Thanks...Steve
Hi. Sometimes I add frozen blueberries along with Splenda. Honeyville sells 50 lbs. for 53.48 including shipping. I'm vegetarian, trim and healthy far as I know. I LOVE OATS. No, I don't refrig. or add anything else.
Thanks for the Honeyville Blueberry tip. At that price I think I'll buy a 50 lb box myself. We should do a spin off, "America on $10 a day". It would be tips on eating well for cheap. I have a friend who wrote a book about dumpster diving for fresh food in Seattle a number of years ago. He had schedules of what stores threw out on which days. He ate really well. Though I suppose you'd have to call him a risk taker.
Absolutely. Some of the best foods for a person are really inexpensive. Oats, rice, beans, etc. You can spend a lot of money for hype, fancy packaging, organic, and the so-called value-added products, but I strive for simplicity. I picked up some donuts at Walmart the other day for my daughter's sleepover. Got there at 7 am just in time for them to throw away hundreds of old donuts...that they were selling one min. earlier...straight into the trash. What a waste.
I used to volunteer at a plae called "Francis House" where they picked up food like that and served them with free coffee to people who needed clothes, or a warm place to hang out during the day. Hey Wal'Mart! With a little research and a phone call I'll bet you could find someone to make a pick up every day or 2. (Not that "cookus interuptus" is recommending Wal-Mart doughnuts as a fresh, local, organic breakfast, but still...) That service could be part of the "cheap food" spin off.
Yes, they might just allow a homeless shelter or something like that to pick them up. Problem is, this is not a poor area and there are almost no homeless around, unless they are passing through. If they allowed people to buy them as day-old donuts, they might lose money cause those same people will just buy fresh and pay top price, hence they just throw them away. Makes sense from a business POV, but it seems like bad Karma to me. dkw
I would suggest skipping the Splenda (chlorinated sugar)and just prinkle a little brown sugar on top. Unless you are diabetic, in which case use a little stevia if you want sweetness. Research shows that people who use non-caloric "foods" actually create cravings for carbohydrates resulting in weight gain instead of the weight loss they were seeking.
How about some Mexican sugar (piloncillo) its cone shaped and it natural there are about 70 calories in a cone is that the same as brown sugar...Thanks
No one boils walnuts or toppings, that ruins the taste and texture and destroys nutrients
