Wait so the brakes cancel the engine torque?... That's the end of drifting and burnouts then and anything else that makes driving FUN for that matter :/
I wanted one of these but then i found out that they ONLY take premium gas and how expensive they are. I got a Chevy Cruze ECO for 19k and im getting 42MPG.
Here's my review of the Cruze if you're interested.
@Beast9156 if this is your every day crusier and you dont commute more than 35-40 miles a day which cost $1.35 the whole mpg way of thinking goes out the window the mpg thing only factors in after that you run out of battey power.most people dont drive more than 20 mi a day never the less 40.so effectively your transportation cost are almost nonexistant.however since your initial cost on the cruze are probably less than half of its hybrid sister the volt.you are ahead considering overall cost
I don't think some people consider the second law of thermodynamics in their posts.
At $41,000, this car is pricey. I think it sucks. Don't get me wrong, I love electric cars; but this is not an electric car. Four seats and a small trunk don't cut it for a lot of people. Keep your current car and buy an electric commuter car like the Nissan Leaf.
Also, if there is no detected change when standard, sport, or extended range are engaged, WHAT'S THE POINT?
n the next 5 years the electirc market is going to take over. Why would you spend more feeding your car than you do feeding your family? If a new car payment with $0 down was was less than your monthly gas bill wouldnt you buy an electic car too? Or would you just keep feeding the already rich oil companys witch are basically over pricing oil to profit or make us mondern slaves to our gas pumps? If you live off grid (solar or wind power) shes free to charge only oil change 1yr
the best thing to increase EV range would be a small generator on each wheel that charges up the battery as you drive along. not just boring regen braking. it could increase the range by ALOT! a hundred miles even.
@crazymanpictures13 This is quite impossible bud. Why? Because when you regen with an electric motor, you have to give it a lot of energy (torque) so it can turn and then capture energy. But putting electric generators in each wheels and forcing them to regen while you are driving would be a total waste of energy. You want energy to drive.
BUT, making in-wheel electric motors=AWD EV (it exist) is terrible. Because you rengen directly in the 4 wheels, not in only 2 wheels behind a transmission.
@seff56 wait for 2013 it will go over 100 miles without a charge and will have more solar and air powered features
The reason its not all on it right now is cost... $41,000 is alot for a car so they have to wait for the cost of the technology to come down before they can offer all the new aged features
LMAO. Nice cover up, 90 miles it used 5.3 gallons. 16mpg *9.3 gallons=148 miles on fuel, plus another maybe..maybe 90 from electric. It total your getting less than 300 miles, for 34k Its not worth it. I'm saving a total of 200-300 bucks a year at best if you drive daily of about 80 miles. I'll stick my 2009 8 cylinder jeep that I got 1/4 price, better performance, towing and features. I could Invest the 15k in bonds and market and get results.

The problem with this car is its $40,000+ price tag. Even with the $7,000 government subsidy, it is still $33, 000....for a car the size of a Honda Civic.
If you were to buy a Honda Civic for $17,000...you would have $17,000 to spend on gas........plus every Honda I have owned was an excellent car.
Now, I know that it is better for the environment, but most people won't consider that.....I live in a city where 90% of people could walk or take the bus, but everyone drives there own cars....

@RapeYoFace That's the kind of attitude that got the economy the way it is. The American auto companies, need to make realiable cars. Period. Until then I'm buying Japanese cars.
Government Motor (GM) better make sure there's no defect, otherwise, it will be so funny to see them recall their garbage motor products. Still, I'll not consider GM, or any American brand car.
the passenger seems like an asshole. jeez it's a new car from cherolet let the driver enjoy and play with it. its suppose to be a test drive you disappointed passenger.
When I saw the prototype a couple years back, really liked the aggressive styling, but the real thing is really underwhelming to say the least, but I'm still going to take a close look at it.
My question is... the gas generator it has... how efficient is it? How many miles per gallon does it translate to? I drive 400 mile highway trips frequently, how much gas would I use on this trip?
Does every car come with the angry douche in the passenger seat? No wonder GM went bankrupt, their VP's hate each other. This is the most annoying video ever.
I wouldn't mind an electric car, but ffs I don't need to be reminded about how many trees and polar bears I'm saving. Didn't any of these guys watch South Park's 'smug alert' episode?
hmm let's see, it's slow, ugly, overpriced and for the 44grand asking price I could buy any muscle car from Detroit that will hold it's resale value and obliterate it down the quarter mile....cars like this exist only because of the ridiculous "man-made" global warming hoax, fraud is a better world...ever wonder why the gov't has "incentives" to get people to buy these ridiculous hybrids?? GM was gonna axe this car before osama obama took it over....
@BlacKnightRising This one is ugli inside but they have much nicer versions in black. This will be my next car , not because of some global warming but i want to have a cleaner air for my kids. Investing in technologies that improve our air quality is much more important to me than big V8
hehe typical, 'cleaner air for the kids' well then what are we going to do with all the active volcanoes out there spewing out more toxins in the atmosphere than all the cars in the world, gas guzzlers or not, and lo and behold the world is just fine in spite of billions of years of this activity, I'll stick to my V8's and hold on to my hat!
@BlacKnightRising Dont get me wrong i love v8 , i use to have 2 in te past. , gas polutions is a big % of our polution. Why you think California have this bad air in there , bacause of vulcanos ??
I belive electric is the future , and you can make it much faster than gas or dieles engine could ever go. Best time for 1/4 mile belons to guy that had high performance electric motors installed in his car. In Usa gas is still cheap but everywhere else is 2x sometimes 3x this price
@hateutubepolicy u spelled volcanoes wrong but anyway, Cali has bad air cuz it's in a valley that happens to concentrate all that "bad" air in one place, otherwise NY would be just as smog laden genius, we have good days and bad days depending the hummidity, hybrids are overpriced cost more to maintain and have horrible depreciation histories, waste of money and the global warming hoax has been exposed for what it is blatant leftwing nutjob lies
@BlacKnightRising Sorry about my spelling, English is not my first language ;). Hybrids are overpriced , slow and not so efficient. I would like to see some clean, fast and not so expensive cars to maintain in the future . I am not sure if electric is the best way to go but for now i think it is. True electric cars need no brakes, no transsmition, no fluids to change, sparkplags etc. It can be as fast as v8 or faster ;).
@BlacKnightRising Even is volcanoes are nr 1 life killers , I am sure adding few milions gas, diesel burning cars to this will not help clean the air ;).
PS. I use to have 2005 Jeep grand cherokee with 5.7 hemi in it . It was awesome machine :D
@hateutubepolicy the world has an incredible way of taking care of it's self, everything we use on this planet, is FROM this planet, therefore we as the small life forms that we are, can't alter or harm the global climate it's impossible, as for awesome machines, I own an '06 SRT8 Grand CHerokee a thrill a minute is an understatement and that's before anykind of upgrades.......
@BlacKnightRising Volt is far from perfect but if they start selling it in few years will see higher performance electric cars , this same as it happens with traditional vehicles.
@CourtyardPigeon hehe yea I'm the informed one ur the environmentalist whack-jobs that don't have a clue about what ur talkin' bout, by the way how's the global warming hoax workin' 4 u???? it's 32deg in Florida, record cold in Europe and -5 here in NY with the windchill factor and it's still fall hehe oh and I'm still laughing at the file footage in the news where a prius is stuck in the snow while a big-ass Hummer blows past it hahahaha
you still have to put gas in it? so its just another hybrid, POS! I use to have a VW Jetta TDI that gave me 50ish mpg's and i got more boost out of it through tubing and a intake kit/ exhaust. it hauldazz! i ran a 14.2 at 106mph 1/4mile at the track. add TIEN suspention and a set of BBS LM wheels....whooo i love that car.... but im a supercharged e39 ///M5 guy now...FUK TREES!
Dont drive it to fast..UNDERSTEER!!!! Its ugly, plastic. I drive 40 miles back and forth to work!!! I cant stand my electric bill now!!!! Amazing? My Audi is Amazing!!!
This is the real King of all Hybrid cars. I am from Green Technology Department in PROTON Malaysia and for our own Serial Hybrids, we bench mark only the Chevy Volt. Nothing comes close. All others are ancient technology compared to the Volt.
It is the same as a diesel locomotive but with batteries for on demand power. Trains use a diesel generator to power electric motors. Very old technology from the 1920's. 40k for this is crazy. Well minus the 7500 of tax payers money.
@happy543210 Actually, GM built an electric car over 15 years ago. Interestingly enough that car was more "fuel efficient" than their current reincarnations. As for Toyota, they've so hurt their image. We were looking at a Toyota this year, but I simply couldn't put my family in a car that "may" kill them.
i know the truth in the volt was a hybrid because there has CVT on between of electric motor and gas engine like the toyota prius did. The Volt is NOT ELECTRIC CAR ITS IS HYBIRD! i read new on motor tread say that
What do apartment dwellers do? and.....please....anybody, can you help me find a video that has a volt running with the gasoline generator engaged?...what does it feel like(vibration), what does it sound like? Is it my imagination or does road noise seem to be louder in a volt.
its cool in all like how they embedded all this modern technology into the car. But I think all this fuel restriction like the battery life affects the rpm. I think it's cool with a "catch" you know? I mean, cars are cars. They're supposed to be simple and operation is supposed to be easily comprehended. Before we know it, driving a car would almost be as complicated as piloting an airplane. I don't like how they made driving a little less simple. The technology part is amazing though :)
I suppose most people should not use any gas while city driving. Then there is just the question of how much fossile fule is used to generate the charging electircity to your house. Certainly 16.3 MPG is crap as most 4 door Jap cars will average 25, lets hope thats wrong.
40 miles on a charge is because GM chose to only use 50% of actual battery capacity for longevity reasons. The LiFeP04 A123 systems battery is good for over 1000 Full charge to completely discharged cycles, maybe more That means 40 miles@ 1000 complete full to empty cycles = 40000 miles battery life, but could be 3 times that given the fact they only use half the capacity at any cycle! The Nissan Leaf will be good too depending if the range is good enough, but research shows 100 miles is enough
@40172 The MPG for charging the battery and driving the car at the same time would be hugely low ! That is the problem with serial hybrids. Hybrids in general should be able to switch from serial to parallel and vice versa. Sometimes it is more efficient to travel using nothing but parallel hybrid on a long journey, not serial. You have the weight disadvantage that screws up the whole serial hybrid theory of efficiency.
@LOLDISNEYLAND the improved efficiency of an engine running at constants rpm with high compression ratios with high octane fuel makes up for the inefficiency of converting from mechanical to electrical back to mechanical energy in the serial electric hybrid setup.
Notice you only see test drives in a parking lot? That is all they are good for, short local drives before you got to plug them in for 4 to 8 hours! No thanks, I'll take a Honda hybrid or Prius that never needs a plug in for half the price of the Govco built Volt(with your tax dollars and your tax dollar rebate). Note this rebate is NOT offered to self financed and operated carmakers.. UNFAIR, but with Obama, that is not an option!
It runs 40 miles on teh battery, then another 350 till the gas runs out.. Your only range limit is how for to the next gas station, same as a Prius or Insight. But this car is totally electric drive, with the gas engine acting as a generator when the battery gets low. But you can continue to drive as long as you have fuel.
As to Obama.. I agree.. the tax stuff sux. But GM has repaid thier debt to the feds 5 yrs ahead of schedule.
@40172 Hi. I think you might have missed it: the Volt is a hybrid. The drive is electric. When the batteries run out an ICE starts and recharges the batteries while you're still driving. You don't have to wait 4 hours for a recharge. If you want to you can plug in at home while you sleep. No amount of sleeping will get your Honda/Toyota refueled ; -)
16.5 miles per gallon, "I wouldn't put any credence in that". The efficiency mileage numbers displayed on the dash showed that in 89.5 miles driven, 5.3 gallons of gasoline were used for an average mileage of 16.5 miles per gallon during the previous test drives. That's not quite the 50 miles per gallon I would have hoped to have seen.
My 25mpg car would need 1.6 gallons to travel (40 miles), which could cost between $4.80 @ $3/g and $6.40 @ $4/g. About how much would it cost to charge my future Chevy Volt?
I really think GM has got this thing down! The amount of electricity used charging this thing up could easily be offset by changing ALL your household lightbulbs with compact flourescents. If your household already has these flourescencts, a change to a newer/better major electrical appliance (Stove, water heater, household space heat...etc.) could make up the difference.
You should have a look at the new Malibu, Equinox, Traverse and Camaro. GM has really stepped up their game, you would not recognize them as Chevy's if it weren't for the badging. Wonderful cars... the new Malibu is just beautiful all around.
@gabrielperron If you charge it at night, very little, no more than running a large consumer electronic like a plasma tv. E.v's cost a few dollars to "fill up" this is an erev so as long as you commute less than 40 miles a day it'll be cheap
ok, i've watched this video from a to z, so now please, GOD, i don't wanna see retard people EVER AGAIN; the car may be good but by the way people drive in your country you can replace your car with a kitchen sink powered by last week soured soup, maybe it will even act better on the road
road noise isolation is horrible in this vehicle, sounds like they r driving around in a convertable almost. give me a fusion hybrid, the fusion is a lot cheaper, but built a lot better. nothing great here, chevy built another looser
The electric cord should be retractable into the Chevy Volt. The biggest problem is opening up the trunk to take out the cord, unwinding the cord, then plugging the cord into the car, then into the wall.... 8 hours later, unplug the car, unplug the cord from the wall outlet, winding up the cord, opening the car trunk, and placing this cord back in the trunk. Cant GM design it to be a bit more simpler then that?
Don't let the Japanese make us look like fools again. Come on GM!
@Batmanshack The Volt is a nice looking car compared to half the stuff coming from Japan. You need glasses or a stronger prescription. Have yuo taken a look at the Prius or Nissan Cube; anything with a Scion label on it? Now those are ugly. This car is unique looking, but not ugly like a Camry or that new Crosstour from Honda. Japanese design (like their architecture) is a far cry from Italian form or German precision. American design is balanced IMO.
Toyota (TM) hired ex-government regulators to kill at least four investigations into problems with its cars in the U.S. That's the conclusion of an investigation by Bloomberg. toyota has been suckering its customers,
The swanky radio and all is nice, but GM like many American car companies needs to move away from the gimmicky add ons and focus not only on the build of the car exterior but the interior build quality of the car. When I compare mid range cars from GM with something like a Honda, Im always amazed how cheesy the plastic interior of the car is compared to the Honda.
The whole concept of this car is to use an electric motor to drive the wheels and a conventional petrol/diesel motor to generate power for said electric motor.
Fully electric engines still need to have power produced elsewhere (power stations). Most power production is achieved with more energy and co2 emissions than a local petrol/diesel motor.
@morrisobrien wrong and wrong, assuming that all power around the world and in america was coal powered and produced it isn't, the C02 figures are still less.
If you consider a mitsubishi imiev to a similar 2008 fiat panda 1.0L ecotech engine, the figures are still better. Even if you think global warming is a farce, the non polluting manner of the E.V means no air pollution

My question is... the gas generator it has... how efficient is it? How many miles per gallon does it translate to? I drive 400 mile highway trips frequently, how much gas would I use on this trip?

Bet it would run great with a Z06 engine in it!
JK, seriously though. My commute is 23 miles each way. If my work would let me charge it there I could save some money.

@BlacKnightRising This one is ugli inside but they have much nicer versions in black. This will be my next car , not because of some global warming but i want to have a cleaner air for my kids. Investing in technologies that improve our air quality is much more important to me than big V8
hateutubepolicy 1 year ago
hehe typical, 'cleaner air for the kids' well then what are we going to do with all the active volcanoes out there spewing out more toxins in the atmosphere than all the cars in the world, gas guzzlers or not, and lo and behold the world is just fine in spite of billions of years of this activity, I'll stick to my V8's and hold on to my hat!
BlacKnightRising 1 year ago
@BlacKnightRising Dont get me wrong i love v8 , i use to have 2 in te past. , gas polutions is a big % of our polution. Why you think California have this bad air in there , bacause of vulcanos ??
I belive electric is the future , and you can make it much faster than gas or dieles engine could ever go. Best time for 1/4 mile belons to guy that had high performance electric motors installed in his car. In Usa gas is still cheap but everywhere else is 2x sometimes 3x this price
hateutubepolicy 1 year ago
@hateutubepolicy u spelled volcanoes wrong but anyway, Cali has bad air cuz it's in a valley that happens to concentrate all that "bad" air in one place, otherwise NY would be just as smog laden genius, we have good days and bad days depending the hummidity, hybrids are overpriced cost more to maintain and have horrible depreciation histories, waste of money and the global warming hoax has been exposed for what it is blatant leftwing nutjob lies
BlacKnightRising 1 year ago
@BlacKnightRising Sorry about my spelling, English is not my first language ;). Hybrids are overpriced , slow and not so efficient. I would like to see some clean, fast and not so expensive cars to maintain in the future . I am not sure if electric is the best way to go but for now i think it is. True electric cars need no brakes, no transsmition, no fluids to change, sparkplags etc. It can be as fast as v8 or faster ;).
hateutubepolicy 1 year ago
@BlacKnightRising Even is volcanoes are nr 1 life killers , I am sure adding few milions gas, diesel burning cars to this will not help clean the air ;).
PS. I use to have 2005 Jeep grand cherokee with 5.7 hemi in it . It was awesome machine :D
hateutubepolicy 1 year ago
@hateutubepolicy the world has an incredible way of taking care of it's self, everything we use on this planet, is FROM this planet, therefore we as the small life forms that we are, can't alter or harm the global climate it's impossible, as for awesome machines, I own an '06 SRT8 Grand CHerokee a thrill a minute is an understatement and that's before anykind of upgrades.......

This is the real King of all Hybrid cars. I am from Green Technology Department in PROTON Malaysia and for our own Serial Hybrids, we bench mark only the Chevy Volt. Nothing comes close. All others are ancient technology compared to the Volt.
joeshadow67 1 year ago
It is the same as a diesel locomotive but with batteries for on demand power. Trains use a diesel generator to power electric motors. Very old technology from the 1920's. 40k for this is crazy. Well minus the 7500 of tax payers money.

@happy543210 Actually, GM built an electric car over 15 years ago. Interestingly enough that car was more "fuel efficient" than their current reincarnations. As for Toyota, they've so hurt their image. We were looking at a Toyota this year, but I simply couldn't put my family in a car that "may" kill them.

What do apartment dwellers do? and.....please....anybody, can you help me find a video that has a volt running with the gasoline generator engaged?...what does it feel like(vibration), what does it sound like? Is it my imagination or does road noise seem to be louder in a volt.
contributor34 1 year ago
@contributor34 oh...I see that later in the video they address the generator issues.
contributor34 1 year ago
its cool in all like how they embedded all this modern technology into the car. The technology part is amazing though :)
vboytan 1 year ago
I suppose most people should not use any gas while city driving. Then there is just the question of how much fossile fule is used to generate the charging electircity to your house. Certainly 16.3 MPG is crap as most 4 door Jap cars will average 25, lets hope thats wrong.
Battleneter 1 year ago
40 miles on a charge is because GM chose to only use 50% of actual battery capacity for longevity reasons. The LiFeP04 A123 systems battery is good for over 1000 Full charge to completely discharged cycles, maybe more That means 40 miles@ 1000 complete full to empty cycles = 40000 miles battery life, but could be 3 times that given the fact they only use half the capacity at any cycle! The Nissan Leaf will be good too depending if the range is good enough, but research shows 100 miles is enough

This is the correct way to build a hybrid not the way that Toyota and Honda do it. Looks like GM will eventually take the lead again.
It's just a pity they didn't do it years ago when they had the EV-1 because they would be kicking goals today.
rentabomb 1 year ago
OOPS, the tester brought up the MPG guage...16.3 mpg in 89 miles...NOT the 200 MPG that was touted before!
40172 1 year ago
@40172 The MPG for charging the battery and driving the car at the same time would be hugely low ! That is the problem with serial hybrids. Hybrids in general should be able to switch from serial to parallel and vice versa. Sometimes it is more efficient to travel using nothing but parallel hybrid on a long journey, not serial. You have the weight disadvantage that screws up the whole serial hybrid theory of efficiency.
LOLDISNEYLAND 1 year ago
@LOLDISNEYLAND the improved efficiency of an engine running at constants rpm with high compression ratios with high octane fuel makes up for the inefficiency of converting from mechanical to electrical back to mechanical energy in the serial electric hybrid setup.
frbe0101 1 year ago
Notice you only see test drives in a parking lot? That is all they are good for, short local drives before you got to plug them in for 4 to 8 hours! No thanks, I'll take a Honda hybrid or Prius that never needs a plug in for half the price of the Govco built Volt(with your tax dollars and your tax dollar rebate). Note this rebate is NOT offered to self financed and operated carmakers.. UNFAIR, but with Obama, that is not an option!
40172 1 year ago
@40172
But GM has repaid thier debt to the feds 5 yrs ahead of schedule.
kens97sto171 1 year ago

@Batmanshack The Volt is a nice looking car compared to half the stuff coming from Japan. You need glasses or a stronger prescription. Have yuo taken a look at the Prius or Nissan Cube; anything with a Scion label on it? Now those are ugly. This car is unique looking, but not ugly like a Camry or that new Crosstour from Honda. Japanese design (like their architecture) is a far cry from Italian form or German precision. American design is balanced IMO.

Most power production is achieved with more energy and co2 emissions than a local petrol/diesel motor.
morrisobrien 2 years ago
@morrisobrien wrong and wrong, assuming that all power around the world and in america was coal powered and produced it isn't, the C02 figures are still less.
If you consider a mitsubishi imiev to a similar 2008 fiat panda 1.0L ecotech engine, the figures are still better. Even if you think global warming is a farce, the non polluting manner of the E.V means no air pollution
