@KhammettJpageAsmith I have the mini stack version, they go quite loud depending on your cab, i just use mine in my room and i dig the volume it puts out. Plus,it also depends on your setup. But yes... it is LOUD
hey mate, i was wondering if you can use just the head and record straight into cubase through an audio interface (in my case maudio fast track pro and cubase 5 as my recording software) i so wanna buy this little beast
This is NOT a hybrid amp people, check the website, it's all tube. Great playing by the way, nice vid. I got to try one of these recently and now I'm torn between this and the Vox Night Train.
@GibsonTick it has ic's in the preamp who just amplify the signal for more gain. not a big difference in tone compared to a full tube amp, if it's even noticeable, but that amount of gain would be impossible with just one preamp tube. they of course call it all tube, cause it has a tube power- and preamp. and all tube sells better than hybrid
Sounds just like my friend's 20 watt Egnater, of course won't get as loud, but the tone is like identical (at least with the EQing you've done with it)
If I plug this into a 2x12 (containing two 100w speakers), will I get enough volume out of it to play relatively small gigs and practice with a metal band (loud drummer included)?
@nmthrashmetal It all depends ahhaa, it is doable. I have done a few gigs with mine, the hardest one was an outdoor garden party, it struggled a little but just about managed, you can easly mic it up to the p.a tho, for the price the tone is unbeatable :)
@nmthrashmetal it's useful il you're playing in a apartment and neighbours are going to kill you if you're too loud! you can also get nice crunch sound with low volume..
@nmthrashmetal Well, unless you can crank a higher wattage amp you're not going to get the full sound characteristics out of the thing like you probably want.
To get the valves red, sizzling hot you have to crank it. Probably anything above 20 watts (in a tube amp) is going to be so loud when cranked that most people will never turn it up high enough to get the tubes red hot -- they'll never get to hear the full potential of a big amp.
@nmthrashmetal its good for practising and recording, especially if you are a tube purist and want that crancked tube tone without turning your house into rubble, If you want to do that, buy a blackstar series one 200 with a KT 88 power amp stage and 200 watts output that is definetely going to rock the neighbourhood - literally.
I have a similar Randall Cabinet that I plug a Peavey 6505 into. I'm looking to get a smaller amp for practice at home at quiter volume. I'm thinking possibly to get that head and just plug it into my Randall as you do.
The people who don't believe he can get this sound out of a Blackstar HT5, it actually can, I own the Blackstar HT5 by myself, the amp has loads of gain!
You can definitely get that much distortion out of any amp regardless the preamp tube amount. Tubes are not the source of the distortion in high gain amps. It's in the circuit design!!! Case in point- A fender twin has two preamp tubes but is clean as clean can be. My orange tiny terror has two preamp tubes but I can put a jcm 800 to shame with my distortion!!! Or better yet... explain how amp companies get deadly amounts of gain out of solid state amps.
@FiveseveNp90 First- Do'nt tell me what to say. I'm not your child. Second- The fact that you're trying to correct me in telling me to be word specific and then providing a second option for your own word is fucking hilarious! Third- You still have'nt explained how solid state amps can have high levels of gain/distortion/saturation with no tubes in them.
1. Study linguistics to find out what a synonym is.
2. Study electronics to find out how thermionic valves and transistors work, and how and why one would push them into saturation (aesthetics also helps here).
I don't get my kicks out of telling people what to say but it's important to use the right terminology where context demands it. You wouldn't cross the street on the red light just because you have the right to call it green, would you?
Hi! Are you also not really satisfied with the amount of low end from this amp? Especially if I use a distortion pedal on the clean channel, it looks like all low end is gone :-/
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Went and played at guitar center yesterday and was a little dissapointed. It doesnt get loud like i wanted and actually turned out not that much better than my solid state peavey 15W amp lol.
I really recommend it. The only thing I was disappointed about was getting a good solo setting. It can do metal just fine but I'm going to get a BB Preamp to fill out the sound for solos.
No it's not. It has a solid state diode clipping circuit in the preamp. Plus, the effects loop is not tube powered. Do you honestly think you can get that much distortion out of a 12AX7 and a 12BH7? A 12BH7 is very close to a 12AU7 (the lowest gain preamp tube around.)
I contacted Blackstar and corresponded with an engineer and he assured me that all clipping of the signal in the Blackstar HT-5 is only done in the tube section of the amp. So, while op-amps do amplify the signal to an extent, the clipping and most of the amplification is done through the tube section. So, while some SS components are in the signal path the amp doesn't do any clipping through it. That is a strong point, IMO.
@66Titan66 so is this amp a tube amp, a hybrod or a solid state amp? how can it be all tube if it doesnt even have a power tube (eg: an el84). i just5 got this amp and love it either way, i am just curios
I bought this amp and traced out the circuit. There's a solid state opamp and diodes before the 12AX7 that produce gain and distortion. There's also a solid state phase splitter between the 12AX7 and the 12BH7. It's a mixture of solid state and tubes, therefore it's considered a hybrid amp. If you like the sound then it doesn't matter what it is, but for those who care, it's a hybrid amp.
It's definitely a hybrid. It uses one 12ax7 in the preamp and one 12bh7 dual triode in a class AB push pull power amp config. Anyhow, I expect that the preamp valve is preceeded by a solid state stage before the valve in OD channel. Also the phase inverter and the FX loop would be done with transistors.
Of course there could be some diode clipping going on also. but why should any of this matter as long as the amp sounds good.
I don't think you can really call this a hybrid amp.
According to Blackstar the opamps do not provide any clipping. All the distortion comes from that one preamp tube. I found that hard to believe, but that's straight from one of the Blackstar amp engineers.
Anyway, this amp is totally awesome... hybrid or not.
Well, technically the amp has a hybrid pre (The input amplifier is an opamp, drivind the tube) into a hybrid power amp (the phase inverter being a solid state). So even without clipping diodes HT-5 will always have hybrid operation. This however is just technical babbling since the amp seems to perforn remarkably well.
PS: Even amps like Dumble ODS use transistor input drivers. Sometimes they can work BETTER (some cahode followers, rvrb drivers) than tubes. Big diff. is that tubes od WAY better
It's not, there is an op-amp in the preamp stage that delivers a lot of the gain, but that's not important, what's important is that it sounds great at low volume.
Well, I did some research. I bought an HT-5, opened it up and traced out the circuit. It uses an opamp and diodes for gain and distortion in the preamp before the 12AX7 and a solid state phase-splitter to drive the 12HB7 tube. I think that means it's a "hybrid" amp (combination solid state and tube).
No no what I meant was that this amplifier gets a very respectable amount of distortion by itself, yet there are only two preamp tubes in it. There is no possible way to get THAT much gain out of it with just the two preamp tubes alone. Not only that, but people have mentioned numerous times that there is a diode clipping circuit in here. This wasn't even directed towards you in any way. Great video anyhow! Haha. We'd love to see more!
So, is the Blackstar a hybrid? I say it isn't in the "traditional" sense. Yes, the Blackstar does have some solid state components (op-amps) in the signal path. However, the solid state components DO NOT PROVIDE ANY CLIPPING. All signal clipping done by the Blackstar HT5 is done in the tube section and most of that is done in the preamp tube section.
First of all, in my experience, a hybrid amp is one with a solid state preamp that provides some clipping with a tube power section. Many Peavey amps were made like this including the 160W, ear splitting, Marshall squashing Peavey Mace and the Peavey Heritage VTX series. Those amps had some great tone and were extremely loud. Certainly, too loud for most musicians but we loved them and the Marshall stacks in our bedrooms anyway when I was a kid.
I'll bet many people have solid state components in their signal chain while using the Rebel, Mesa's, Marshalls, etc. As soon as you connect a compressor, a clean boost, a chorus, an EQ, or just about any pedal made today, you have solid state components in the signal path. If you use an OD pedal, you have solid state components (diodes or transistors, etc.) clipping the signal that's being amplified by your "all tube" amp.
@LovingTheFooFighters I'm not questioning the amount of gain. I've played through one. They do have plenty of gain. The thing is, it's not just the 2 preamp tubes that are giving it all that gain. There are other solid state culprits involved. Also, one of the preamp tubes is being used as a power tube. So the distortion is coming from a diode clipping circuit in the preamp along with the one preamp tube.
i think the fact that i can actually hear the pick hitting the strings because he is so close to the camera throws me off a bit. kinda makes it sound like the amp has a weird attack. haha
It is not fraud. But it is because hybrid mixing valve with diode for the distortion, simple. The manufacturer's Web site there is nothing about it and the manufacturer does not answer my messages. If you find something, show me.
it sounds very nice except the palmmute lacks power in my opinion. But I would anyway, since I have a good Damage Control pedal to cover this dimension :D
sadly not, you only have the choice of hear and drums, hear or drums is out of the question, If there is a question. If you looking for an amp you that you can hear or drums you might want to look at a 67 fender penis amp.
That's a pretty thick tone for a little 5 watt amp. I never thought I'd see the day you could get that kind of sound out of a 5 watt amp without a pedal. I totally want one now.
Wow! I was looking at these amps and now I'm pretty much sold. Are you running into that Randall cab in the back? How are the Blackstar cabs, have you tried them?

The Blackstar doesn't have a SS gain type of tone. It sounds like what it is: a tube amp with a tube preamp clipping the signal.
66Titan66 2 years ago 2
I'll bet many people have solid state components in their signal chain while using the Rebel, Mesa's, Marshalls, etc. As soon as you connect a compressor, a clean boost, a chorus, an EQ, or just about any pedal made today, you have solid state components in the signal path. If you use an OD pedal, you have solid state components (diodes or transistors, etc.) clipping the signal that's being amplified by your "all tube" amp.

@ILikeJuice, it can, I own the HT5 by myself, great amp for Metallica like stuff, and others.
LovingTheFooFighters 1 year ago
@LovingTheFooFighters I'm not questioning the amount of gain. I've played through one. They do have plenty of gain. The thing is, it's not just the 2 preamp tubes that are giving it all that gain. There are other solid state culprits involved. Also, one of the preamp tubes is being used as a power tube. So the distortion is coming from a diode clipping circuit in the preamp along with the one preamp tube.

What settings do you use for Metallica stuff?
I messed with one at GC and I just couldn't find "it".

i would seriously consider buying this amp if i could get a rammstein , machinehead , stone sour style of sound. is that possible?
jcallseven 2 years ago
i think the fact that i can actually hear the pick hitting the strings because he is so close to the camera throws me off a bit. kinda makes it sound like the amp has a weird attack. haha

I'm thinking about getting a Blackstar. Can you tell me if you are using any pedals? Thanks.
madmoe70 2 years ago
that sounds surprisingly metal....
seems like an awesome practice amp or small gig amp!!

Unfortunately the Blackstar HT-5 is a hybrid amp - not an all-tube amp.
christiancastro1971 2 years ago
What is it that makes it a hybrid amp?
Just cos all the places i've seen it for sale advertise it as 'all tube' and isn't that fraud or something if it's a hybrid?

christiancastro1971 2 years ago
It is not fraud. But it is because hybrid mixing valve with diode for the distortion, simple. The manufacturer's Web site there is nothing about it and the manufacturer does not answer my messages. If you find something, show me.
But it is an excellent amp. I have one.

it sounds very nice except the palmmute lacks power in my opinion. But I would anyway, since I have a good Damage Control pedal to cover this dimension :D

I love it
is it loud enough to hear or drums?
basssungwoo 2 years ago
sadly not, you only have the choice of hear and drums, hear or drums is out of the question, If there is a question. If you looking for an amp you that you can hear or drums you might want to look at a 67 fender penis amp.
christhekiwi12 2 years ago
Oh thanks!!
BUt i actually meant to say "is it loud enough to hear ON drums"
basssungwoo 2 years ago
Ive heard from pretty reliable sources that if you run it into an really airtight 4*12 it actually does get loud enough to rehearse with.

I bet once you play one you discover it sounds exactly like a Roland Cube. Video sound is a bad bad way to judge an amps tone.
CrazyDiamond1968 2 years ago
Except it doesn't sound like a cube :)
Cube's are great though.
Milo9 2 years ago
buy an a/b pedal. play this with your mark IV. that would sound beautifulllll.

That's a pretty thick tone for a little 5 watt amp. I never thought I'd see the day you could get that kind of sound out of a 5 watt amp without a pedal. I totally want one now.
Wes919 2 years ago 3
Nice work man
Can you get that tone out of it at bedroom levels or would you need an attenuator?

This IS bedroom levels!

What speakers are in the Randall?
Audsk8er 2 years ago
Wow! I was looking at these amps and now I'm pretty much sold. Are you running into that Randall cab in the back? How are the Blackstar cabs, have you tried them?
professorlessor 2 years ago
The Blackstar Artisan cabs are awesome :) Not a big fan of the HT-5 Ministack cabs though; I don't like 10" speakers.

freakin awesome tone.

did you use a noise gate/supressor? The amp seems to run extremely quietly otherwise!

No noise gate, just straight in.
