I really love the trailer for this comic <3 but I'll never forget the beautiful first trailer you posted on Elfquest, but I can unfortunately not recall what the music for it was there. Something with Jekyll and Hyde, I think?
Long-time Pini fan, collector of all things EQ and seeing she has new work is exciting. I like what I see here. Some settings and coloring are reminiscent of the anime Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (which is a compliment - it is quite lush). Can't wait to read this - please keep up the great work! (More EQ please? <3)
For everyone, who shits bricks seeing two male people embrace. Smoke some Clawfinger (the song called Faggot In You to be exact). They said everything for me.
(what's going on today - just can not shut up...)
But, anyway, it is the serious thing. Not as heart touching as ElfQuest, but who compares... Characters are very strong. "StephAnton" almost-love story adds to the illustration of "lovelessness". Designer-girl (i always forget names, you can slap me for that)seems crazy but it makes her outstand. Anton Prosper looks like Strongbow (and acts as dumb) My only advice to them is to use Brain(tm)(r). 100% free, 100% natural, 100% legal to posess. And to be less selfish. That would save them a trouble.
But even they forgot everything just to enjoy their new powers and skills. Nothing surprising, they have passed the moment when worries about future of the planet were nescessary. Their party ended when they found out that their star loses temperature badly. Fortunately, they went to find other globes.
People of MoRD's word will hardly reach this stage, i think.
Immortality? Not a big problem, I think. The worst is the fact we (they) do not know how to use it yet. (computing problem only confirms it. Too stupid to live forever, huh). The High Ones (or Elves) from ElfQuest (same authors, but much better story, IMHO) did almost well. They just invented anti-overpopulation system called Recognition. Plus, selection as the side-effect. Cool.
Distributing it as a self-reproducting program (s.a. Computer Virus) even in userspace (if using POSIX-like permission model) would not be expensive. Dumbass lemmings.
In fact, it's not very smart to use a goverment mainframe for such a fine computing (the ueber-nano-wonder-something-that gives-immortality-i-forgot-the-name required a super-delicate programming). Why didn't they use cluster technologies and GRID-systems? Millions of computers in the world (we're speaking about "perfect future", don't we?) would do much better than the one aincent server.
BTW, the same situation we have with certain companies in present.
Apple & Microsoft, for instance. MS dominates, Apple does not give up and makes as much closed-source stuff as possible (hell knows even how to customise it), industrial espionage goes all the way, they do not care what users want and live to throw shit one to another.
There is no much love between them. In fact, there's no love.
The atmosphere of complete "lovelessness" is greatly described in the story.
For those who don't grasp the concept of "free adaptation..." Classic literature has long been the source of wildly diverse re-imaginings. Easy examples: "West Side Story" and "Forbidden Planet" are from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Tempest." With all honor and respect to Poe's "Masque," it, too, has seen many interpretations. The Pini graphic novel/web comic is just wilder than most. Keep an open mind and give it a try!
@vipewolf Stephan is a little cry baby if he only had patience they had all the time in the world and he could not wate ...the prince gave him eternal life but Stephan couldn't deal with a little swinging so he killed the world when u are really mad that is the worst time to make decisions.
I didn't even know this was going on till I tried to find Elfquest at the local bookstore. And there it was, in black and white (and other colors, too.) Thank goodness I'm not too faint-hearted, or I could have passed out in the store!
Gah. Please post the next chapter on Go comics. I'm dying here. Poor, poor Steffan.
Wow...VERY mature series. Read it for the first time this evening and i have to say it is probably your best work yet. Both Visually and story wise. I had a few moments of "ahem!Okay then!" during the Orenge room scene, but "wow" is all that really stays. Been a EQ follower for a while, and I see you've only gotten better at what you've always done well. Keep being you, always. Oh, and what you've done with the colors is amazing! Beautiful..
I'm sorry, the artwork is wonderful but this doesn't seem to have anything to do with Poe's story about a bunch of selfish aristocrats who try to escape a gruesome plague by shutting themselves in a castle and throwing a wild party.
Poe's very short "story" (more a tone poem than a story) provides the most basic seed, which has been adapted, expanded, evolved and morphed into a futuristic, science-fiction exploration. There are many more characters than the original Prospero (Anton Prosper is his ripply "mirror"), there's an actual story arc, and it's much more mature. Also, you've only seen the first third; there's nastiness and fireworks just waiting in the wings!
The Masque Of The Red Death is one of my favorite Poe stories and it just seems IMHO that this doesn't look quite dark and bloody enough I'm sorry, Keep in mind that Cholera and blood was something that was an obsession of Poe's when he wrote TMOTRD and several other stories because his wife Virginia was dying of Cholera at the time.
Hi cha5, I thought the conference-room death was quite macabre even if it wasn't profusely bloody. As for dark, I don't know how this version of Masque could be any more dark - these are really nasty motivations clearly headed for the darkest outcomes one can imagine.
Well honestly I'm just something of a crankey old Poe purist who thinks that most attempts to embelish Poe's storys adding new characters storylines or fleshing them out are really pointless but that's just my opinion,
As to it being dark I was refering to the elements like Poe's use of allegory of trying to deny death and the dreamlike pursuit of The Red Death in an attempt to pursue it through colored rooms which reflect the progression from life to death
"And darkness and decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all"
Plus the final apocalyptic ending in which Darkness besides symbolizing death, is a pricipal of Chaos, from which God made the world, Decay takes place as matter returns to it's original state and Prospero's world created out of chaos returns to chaos.
I haven't been able to read Dini's story yet though in fairness so I really have no right to judge it, I'll check that website being as I'm an old Elfquest fan.
Your willingness to be open-minded is much appreciated. These characters are people first - in their futuristic society sexual orientation is a non-issue. Their world has plenty of other problems that we don't, though! Stay tuned!
@MadamMasque would u ever consider making Stephan into Stephani ? also i think this could be a cool idea for a big stage production in Vegas like a cerc da sola type of thing ?
On the other hand, though, there's one Masque reader I have encountered who feels that the series is now slightly redundant now that Anton and Steffan have knocked some boots.
Wow, the art work in this was so, so, undescribale. If this story is any where as good as Elfquest then consider me sold to that too. While I was watching that trailer I was thinking, "Now where can I find that at." And then pow there it was at the end. I'm so anxious to read now. Thank you vary much.
Basically, I see it as you have a following of genuine people & many of those are willing to contribute & support to your abilities just for the sake of doing it. Something I read once:
I'm very sincere when I say that, Wendy. I have been wanting to send things to you since I was pretty young but have never been bold enough to do so. Heh....
Just writing this up is making me nervous
But I have sent some things of mine to you in round about way....
Wendy~ your skills are so polished (gorgeous) and always have been that I have a hard time trying to comprehend how it could be getting better but I dare say ........
point is you blow me away and I look up to you!
I hope someday to be able to whip out such dynamic characters like you do and that's the truth.
Thanks sweetheart. Your characters will come from what excites you! And from what tears your heart out! Don't hold back a thing, even if it scares you. Be bold, young artists and storytellers! Be bold!
Yes, you're right. And I must tell you that Strongbow always was one (or better said still is) one of my favourite Elfquest-Characters :-). I somehow grew up with Elfquest, discovered the story when I was 13 years old and now I'll soon turn 37 and still love it ;-) and my babyson will grow up with it from the start *lol*
I dont think this is good, not with my expectations to "Masque Of the Red Death"

tl;dr Cool but too gloomy story with atmosphere of a feast during a plague and general hopelessness.
p.s.: my comments make a good copypasta. Oh, exploitable (maybe)

Craaap... It's not a "perfect future" described in a story. It's a corporate hell.

"...the world doesn't pay for what a person knows
And rarely wants to pay for what a person does
But those who care show puzzle and stare
Singin ' what it is, is what it was
Cause he who learns the rules of wisdom
without transforming it to daily life
is a bad condition of contradiction
A rap like that can slap back afterlife."
To me, that means that you should live without regrets......and do what drives you.
