  • You know....it's at least a year now after I first saw your video. It is still one of my favorites out there. Just awesome! I'm now a Hang 2 and I'm getting there. This video is very inspiring....just brilliant...Be safe! Udo ..... "Hanging with Udo" on YouTube....

  • Thanks for the kind comments. Shame about the landing eh? I recently flew the same site on a Moyes Malibu Skyfloater and landed across the slope and did a proper 'no-stepper'. Hope you enjoy your hanggliding journey. Pete

  • err wheres the rest of your keel? what glider is this by the way?

  • The keel is removeable for power (see my other videos). It's a Wills Wing Eagle 164, the Eagle is supplied with a keel mounted Fin, though I've never flown with it fitted. Pete

  • That's brilliant, nice one !

  • Hey up,

Bin my fav hg clip for a while plus I like the killers. I drove to Anglesey last weekend and reckon I spotted the TO and the LZ (gorse bush :o) ) from the dual carriageway. Always fancied hg but haven't got further than pg. Laziness I guess. Fly in the pennines and also Algo and Morocco. Hoping to venture into north wales this summer and into hg in the coming years. Cheers.

  • you have bottle,it must be great up there.what height was you.and what is the highest you can go

  • No fella, you cant see the thermals per se, but there are visual clues. Such as certain cloud formations, direction of wind and wind speed etc. Also birds can often be found thermalling, so you can tell where thermals are by looking for those signs, not to mention that sometimes long grass can give clues as to thermic activity by the way it gets blown about. The vario is a handy tool, gives you details of your rate of acscent or descent in hundreds of feet per min.

  • To stay up a glider needs to be in air that is ascending at the same vertical speed that it is sinking through the air (eg a glider loses 200ft per minute, so must be in rising air going up 200ft per min to maintain height, to climb (ascend) the air must be rising faster (wind blowing up a windward hill or cliff, or in a thermal)). Sorry for the long answer, Pete

  • I was winding off height before landing, probably 5-600ft.

  • Uk thermals tend to go up to around 5-7000 feet. Flying in Spain I've got up to 10,300ft without power- solely using thermals. Wave lift can get to rediculous heights (15,000ft+). Pete

  • What wing is that?

  • Hello, it's a Wills Wing Eagle 164 square feet. Light weight, easy to fly, land and great with power. Pete

  • Cheers Pete.

Looking at getting in to HG, did a course at JSHPC in Crick Howell back in '99... desperate to get into it proper... just dont have any money. Awesome video, keep em coming! Joe

  • I learnt HG in Crick in 1995- small World! Keep at it- it can Be frustrating to learn- always chasing the wind and weather, great sport when you're up to speed though. Keep at it, Pete

  • yeh, i live not far from torrey pines glider port in san diego, and sure, it costs money for course and equipment also, its very weather dependent, :( i like the sport but never tried it, only gone tendem paragliding once :(

  • wayy Conwy! I live in Colwyn Bay!!

  • I've flown over Colwyn Bay with the engine a few times, not many places to land except Eirias Park. Pete

  • check this out on you tube:vx39.you and Luigi make it look so easy!flying on 39 sqft!

    ;

  • Good luck with the chopper flying.

  • that looks awesome. If that is where you live, it must be a lot of fun to fly over your place. Really amazing

After seeing these vids i'm definetely gonna take some lessons for hanggliding, although 'm currently taking helicopter lessons as i find free time

  • Where was the wind coming from? Did you land straight into it? Maybe would have been better to land crosswind and avoid the down slope? Just a thought. Great video !!!!

  • I landed straight into a very light wind, the ground effect combined with the downslope made me float on forever. I should have landed on the beach, but I'm too lazy to carry my glider over the footbridge :-) Pete

  • Have a look at my video titled "FLPHG Powered hang gliding glider". In light winds you glide into ground effect and slowly bleed off the airspeed until near the stall, then flare to dissipate any remaining energy and stop the forward movement. If the wind is stronger you reduce the bleeding of airspeed until groundspeed is zero, it may not be necessary to flare at all. It's very important to be wings level and into wind. Any tail wind will put my groundspeed outside my running abilities :-)

  • flyingleek, how exactly do you land a hang glider? I mean, what are the procedures involved beforehand and on the flare. It's obviously slightly different to doing it in an aircraft

  • Hang gliding looks beautiful, although I am more of a powered flying person as I am currently training for my PPL(A)

  • hi mate, the song is by the killers and is called jenny was a friend of mine from the album hot fuss

  • No, takeoff was the top of Foel Lus, right behind Dwygyfylchi. It is possible to land back on the top, but I love the fly down. Total flight was 50mins. Pete

  • did you set of from pen mountain

  • Cool!
