  • How dare Mr. Zappa not own up for the obvious fact that rock music is responsible for AIDS.

  • @mikebaal i cant tell, was that sarcastic? or no

  • 9:45 hahaha Frank telling them like it is

  • How exactly does the sexual revolution "fail," anyways? I mean... it didn't really have a conscious direction, it just kinda... happened, didn't it?

  • @KillgoreOv Humans evolve in many ways, and they adapt to the circumstances in which they are living in.The 'sexual revolution' wasn't a revolution, and sexual experimentation continues always. Fast forward 25 yrs later and it looks as if Zappa won the argument. Its good for him he did not live to see what came later. He would not have liked it.

  • @justcallmeassinine Well that's what I mean; you're totally right to say it wasn't really a 'revolution' in the first place. That's just why I find it funny to say that it "failed," y'know?

  • @KillgoreOv From what I heard it was "the pill",economic good times, before Aids, risk free sex, etc, etc, that all together kind of loosened people up.Sort of a lucky combination that happens in human history, but not so often as war and all the horrible crap.

  • @justcallmeassinine Indeed; thanks for your view on the matter, friend. :)

  • I love Zappa's quick brutal responses to these idiotic questions.

"Who is on your side Mr. Zappa?" -'Common sense'.

  • zappa doesnt look down on kids. i hated being spoon fed a belief system as a school kid but my parents let me listen, watch and believe in what i wanted and so far, im happy to say i have had no temptation to kill anyone. music is enjoyable, if you have the common sense to realize films are just films and songs are just songs there is no reason why anything bad should come from it. people that try to blow their own heads off under the influence of what a song "told them to do" are just stupid...

  • JEFF LING!!! OH WOW!!! YOU SHOULD HEAR JELLO BIAFRA ABOUT HIM AND THE BOOK I ALSO HAVE "New book of rock lists"

    JEFF LING IS HYPOCRIPT HERE!!!

  • B&W? also you should read zappas book...it even mentions the words ""Does rock music cause AIDS"." SOME OF ZAPPA'S LYRICS ARE VERY.........

  • Funny how they took a Megadeth lyric that described what our government run military does and turn it around to try and make it sound like the band is promoting that behaviour when its really New World Order government!

  • Why the hell is this in black and white? You do realize there was color TV even way before the 80's right? So whats up?

  • i've always been amazed how a genious ( not only musicly) like frank zappa would go to this shows . i'm so glad he did. we owe zappa for so much more than his wonderfull music. we need him more and more nowadays.

  • let them censor. PMRC censors and denies youth of groundbreaking music -> youths refuse to buy the bullshit music they choose to release -> youths find underground and "taboo" music -> music industry hurts in the money department. bottom line kids know real music eventually and censorship is nothing but false security for the gov't. let them feel like they've won and theyll leave us alone.

  • Ahh. The 80s. When a girl dancing in a bikini in a video could get people wound up.

  • The day young people register to vote and take an active part in the political life in this country, will be the beginning of the end of the religious right controlling both major parties and the elimination of the imbeciles that govern us.

  • I hope all people like Peter Gemma (the poor man's Tucker Carlson) have, or will, "expire" in a most unpleasant way.

  • @xx2n23 Absolutely right. You can listen to Orff's 'Carmina Burana', and walk away thinking, "What the hell was that?" But you can argue with your parents, and walk away thinking, "If you didn't want me, then why did you have me?" There's the difference.

No matter what you do, you're gonna screw up your kids. You're gonna pass your phobias and shortcomings down to them, despite all that you do to avoid it. It's natural. It's sin. Just embrace it, and never stop hoping for change.

  • They blame Frank for all they see wrongs, in music, and movies..

  • Did the guy who recited those Megadeth lyrics fall into a mystical trance from hearing them out of his own mouth and leave the studio to go kill people in the streets?

    Probably not...

  • X making you offended =/= X being offensive

  • They are just lyrics.

There were instrumental compositions that had bloating controversy.

  • Either rock musicians change their ways or government will set the standards is the only two options? Zappa was right we are in a Fascist country.

  • FUCK...no more World War II vets to handle these ruffian rock types on Xfire...very disappointing

  • frank wants 2 continue 2 put the burden of responsibility on the parents---say what?!--thats where it belongs, asswipe!!

  • Bad parents love blaming music, films and video games It's alot easier than being a good parent.

  • @SydBarrett7 Right on.

  • It is censorship I went to KMart once and tried to buy a Twisted Sister cd, they prevented me from buying it, so as he said censorship is when you prevent the product from the consumer they prevented the cd fom me the consumer. Also studies show that rock music improves concentration and boosts memory. Take that PMRC

  • @joshrguitar13 Yup. You couldn't play music at all if you didn't have the brains.

  • Yeah ...Frank Liked Megadeth!!!

  • Jeff Ling disagrees with all three statements: 'Sex is natural, sex is fun, sex is best when one on one'. (There's your *sexual problem* 'moderator'). You have a guy that either thinks sex is unnatural, never fun, and if you must have it I guess with at least three people involved (one of them the gov't apparently) or he just dove right in with the negativity without even listening to the actual question.

  • listen to zappa till death aint nothing wrong with words kids will eventually learn them ya the music is suggestive but it aint forcing anyone to do anything dead kennedys are fucking sick they should of been there too since they were talking about them fuck that rating shit

  • rock music = aids? lol I'm with Zappa

  • Frank Zappa vs. Andy Richter. Fuck yeah.

  • frank be cool and classy as hell, while all these assholes are just blowing smoke out their asses. right on

  • hillarious

  • Polyanna BS Im with you Frank!!

I have had sex with thousands of women and dont have aids its all christian propaganda!

  • Those parent's need mental help!

  • "The sexual revolution has failed... and now we've entered the Age of AIDs."

Best into to anything, ever. Just add: "In the year, 2099..." before that quote, and you've got the intro to an epic sci-fi set in a near dystopian future.

  • "I have a problem with a world that is one-sided, and considers itself the sole arbiters of morality." says the guy pushing for the PMRC putting ratings on the media.

  • Parents are too lazy to take responsability for their children, dont blame musicians.

  • yes... no... hahaha

  • "Look at the censorship, so called Fairness Doctrine, the shutting down of websites, the censorship of Political Correctness, perhaps the worst and most dangerous of Liberalism."

Wrong buddy. Liberalism is NOT the cause of censorship. What political wing tried to silence opposition to the Iraq War & the Vietnam War? Who funded the PMRC in the 80's? It was evangelical groups like the Moral Majority & Focus On The Family, which tried to use the PMRC to censor rock music.

  • "Look at the censorship, so called Fairness Doctrine, the shutting down of websites, the censorship of Political Correctness, perhaps the worst and most dangerous of Liberalism."

  • Hahah! "Whose on your side?"

    "Common sense".

  • "You're problem is with the modern world." Hahaha.

  • Ban politicians.

  • "we are the world" lol if only he was alive to hear the bieber levato miley cyrus remake of it

  • It's like a bunch of monkeys throwing poo at the only human in the zoo.

  • Prejudice.....prejudice.........prejudice. Zappa is absolutely right !.

  • Frank looks sick. I think this is when the cancer that eventually killed him began. He was in remission for several years and then succumbed.

  • Please submit your demo tapes to the government! They gotta listen to your cold raps before you can hit the streets with it.

  • LETS BAN WAR

  • Micheal Kinsley FTW, he was on Zappa´s side.

  • Comment removed

  • Teen pregnancy? Teen abortion? What to do about it? BAN THE DEVIL MUSIC. But remember kids, God punishes people for the sin of condom use.

Aah, and who said religion was good for nothing.... Sure gives me something to laugh about.

  • I grew up in this PMRC nonsense. Thank God for guy's like Zappa that spoke out against this horse shit! Fuck the PMRC and Tipper Gore, fuck 'em all! Thanks Frank! Thanks for being real.

  • "Are their any rock lyrics that you wouldn't want your children listening to???"......

    "We Are the World."

  • we need zappa now, my god!! but this time for video games

  • we need zappa now, my god!!

  • "Mr. Zappa blablabla, blabla, blablabla?" "No."

    "Mr. Zappa blablabla, blabla, blablabla?"

    "No." "No."

    Clear and simple, haha, awesome.

  • @hkonjohansen a freakin' genious !!!

  • I'm surprised Frank didn't point out that many songs from the '50's were sensually based... "Put Your Head on My Shoulder", "Where the Boys Are", "Oh, Boy", etc. were all songs about young love with sexual undertones.

  • The only thing I don't agree with Zappa on is that I think ratings should stay. They're supposed to help parents know what may or may not be appropriate for their children. It's the parents' responsibility to determine what their children can and cannot consume. The ratings give parents a lead on what material they should investigate before allowing their children to consume. Ratings basically makes the parents' responsibility a little easier.

  • @LuigiGodzillaGirl

But its Frank argument (as he explains in more detail in the previous video) that the ratings are inherently flawed and biased toward Christianity, as well as sexually repressive. A movie can be PG or PG-13 and have graphic violence, alcoholism etc, but a movie won't be rated R until it has nudity or the word "fuck". In the eyes of the MPAA seeing violence and substance abuse are less harmful to kids than seeing breasts or hearing swear words.

  • you know what, all this shit about kids having sex and teenage girls getting pregnant is a bunch of immature brats who don't want to take responsibility for their actions. THEY got pregnant. frank zappa isn't responsible for that

  • "amazing"....what an idiot that guy was

  • when did AIDS come in? What does AIDS have to do with rock'n roll music?

  • Frank is great, but let's face it. Music moves people. Media moves people. It influences us. If it didn't, we wouldn't bother with it, we wouldn't watch or listen. We do because it moves us, affects us. Emotion and behavior are inextricably tied to music and images. But media denies it because it's their bread and butter.

  • @theschizoidman Frank was very much for critical analysis of what we see and hear, and is clearly bothered by these people taking the stance of "Don't let them tell you what to think, let US tell you what to think!" Media literacy needs to be taught to more people, and we need to be able to mentally dissect what we see and hear to be healthy as a culture in my opinion.

  • Contrary to popular belief, Frank would be a Libertarian today, NOT a democrat or a Liberal. Look at the censorship, so called Fairness Doctrine, the shutting down of websites, the censorship of Political Correctness, perhaps the worst and most dangerous of Liberalism.

I miss Frank. We need his clear thinking now.

  • Great video! Thanks. The Republican asswipe with mustache reminds me of somebody. Hmm... Two words---Sieg Heil.

  • "common sense"! Frank rules!

  • AT LEAST Jeff Ling puts up more of a fight than John Lofton did. Well, I use the term "fight" loosely...

...But you know what I mean. :P

  • I love how Zappa is so obviously not even trying in this debate and still winning.

  • despite his right-wing almost fascist views, frank is right one this one.

  • @Ewarne I'm curious about something, how is he almost fascist?

  • "We are the world"....Brilliant!

  • Jeff Ling is full of shit. He has nothing to back up his claims, and he's contradicting himself by trying to reduce the sale of "offensive" rock music but claiming that he is not trying to censor it. Frank is absolutely right. Parents should teach their children about sex and all of the things that they think will influence their children, and the government has no right to decide whats content is appropriate for children.

  • I watch this and kept help but just shake my head and laugh. This is hilarious! Look at how angry these men are, and here is Frank Zappa calmly responding.

    Zappa is the man!

  • you can see here that frank has been roasted so much that he stays cool and can articulate and anwser more clearly than before. with these stands he made he did more to rock music than anyone... in america, nowhere else in the world this wasn't ever a issue

  • I simply love Frank. Forever.

  • Doggystyle rules.

  • I wish jello biafra was there to debate along side Mr. Zappa.

  • "Are there any rock lyrics that you have heard in the past couple of years that you don't want your children to hear?"

    "We Are The World"

  • I find it strange that we can have prime-time programming where people are eating pig testicles and elk penises and have shows that feature pictures from murder scenes - but when Janet Jackson shows her nipple on TV, everyone is upset.

  • No.

  • @gevansmd. Are you joking? That has to be the stupidest thing I've heard.

  • Look at how Zappa blinks when he repeats the word "no" as an answer to the reporter's questions. He doesn't believe what he's saying but can't admit it.

  • @gevansmd he blinks all the time... i think its an natural reaction to the spotlight xD dont buy any thing they try to sell u on LIE TO ME xDDD

  • I've got a better idea....LETS BAN RELIGION!! they seem to be the intolerant ones.

  • @snottydyck that makes you just as bad as them

  • @snottydyck That might be a little extreme.

  • @snottydyck I have a better idea, let's ban any political thought unless that thought benefits Obama. Oh sorry the mainstream media and Liberals are trying to do this. =)

  • @snottydyck WHAT A TOLERANT IDEA!

  • I would think if you're a good parent who has raised they're kids right you have more persuasive power with your kids than a guy on a record. Its starts with images and words and eventually in 1119 we will have chips planted in our brains at birth to ward away what the government will deem "Bad Thoughts".

If your unmarried and get aroused ZAP!!!

    Slip of the toungeZAP!!!

Wonder if the goverment might be lying to you SELF-DESTRUCT!!!

  • these schmucks eventually just let out they know whats best for children and they're going to censor whatever they like.

and megadeath are alright and I'd let my kids listen to em. eh they're alright!

zappa leaned to the focus on sex not violence and look whats happened. i turn on the tv these days and its CSI, Cold Case, blood and guts... sex is human and as much as the tv tries to teach the world how normal violence and murder is, its not human so why cant we even see titties ya know...

  • My biggest concern with censorship is that it discourages thought. When we don't allow words or ideas to be portrayed we lose the ability to decide for ourselves whether or not we agree or disagree with an idea.

We're desensitizing our population to the point where we are disallowing free speech, and here it was about sex and violence, but we could be censored for anything now; where do you draw the line?

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

  • Frank totally owns and then pities these fools. It's hilarious.

  • These queers where part of the sexual revolution , hippie freaks that rotted their acid brains. Zappa smoked them. You walk into my bed room you are dead motherfucker. No ifs ans or buts. The PMRC covered our ancesters graves with manure. Its good that they are gone. Let those old freaks rot in their fuckin graves.

  • I'm 22. I wish I could interject and actually take part of this argument. I don't understand why people have such a problem understanding that parents should take responsibility. My parents didn't allow me to watch South Park and the Simpsons when I was a kid. I watch them all the time now. Am I angry at them? No. Did I watch them when they weren't looking? On occasion. But by their telling me not to do it, I knew not to bring the actions in those shows into the household. Responsibility.

  • @zactheninja In addition. I didn't take it into the world. I feel like I learned the proper way to go about life. I learned it from my parents, not the government. I'm for freedom of expression and speech. I may not agree with everything I hear in music or television, but I appreciate the right to say it.

Even if you can't keep it out of the house, parents teach their kids the way they should be. Bad parents = Bad kids but sometimes Bad kids = Bad Kids.

  • Total control: being as eloquent as Frank Zappa, and then replying questions with "yes. no. no." Brilliant

  • zappa was representing us, the people and the kids against the fascist war machine. god bless frank zappa and he's only been gone for a short time, he's still with us. he's not dead, he just smells funny ! frank is a brilliant example of the italian-american who is proud and will fight for the constitution to the death!

  • more sex will save the world. All the frustrated and angry people in world would become peaceful again.

  • wow i disagree.young ppl having sex is ruining our world. be patient wait till u grow up

  • Haha, I love these Zappa appearances on Crossfire.

  • I have to say I didn't think the right's argument could be anymore ridiculous than in the first crossfire/zappa debate, but once again the neo-fascist, American ultra right has proved me wrong. At least Ling just has a bad argument, as opposed to the slimy and deplorable Lofton. Thumbs up to Michael Kinsley here, who is much more charming and witty than his predecessor. Tom Braden was an indecisive character who convinced me at times he was actually the pundit for the right! Zappa for President

  • This is great, but it hurts to see Frank like this. This must be when the cancer started to take hold.

  • Zaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap FZ nails two hippocritical assholes! There's an off button on every radio and TV if you don't like what's on use it. "Mr.Zappa, whose on your side?" Common Sense...

  • I miss frank zappa.

  • we are the world xD zappa's a genius

  • Yes No Yess no AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • Ha ha. Teen pregnancy is all Frank's fault. That's hysterical.

  • I just heard this guy call himself big brother goverment WTF!!!

  • Parents need to supervise their kids and have a right to say what their kids do and watch and listen to. The problem is that most parents dont have the time to research every movie released. A rating system on a film allows parents to know the contents before they take their kids to see it. I work in film games industry and I see nothing wrong with ratings . I disagree with removing a rating system for films and games. Its just information that allows people to make informed decisions.

  • @phlizmo and who hired the raters? are you sure their values are just like yours? What if this industry flaunted its power to blacklist certain companies? What would happen if these kids actually saw/heard this stuff? what kind of people trust an arbitrary rating company to do their parenting?

  • rock isnt the problem, the problem is sex feels too darn good

  • I wonder where he would stand politically today. Would he have been an Obama supporter?

  • @sjk72 Doubt it, probably more of a "libertarian" if you had to equate it to today's labels. He was a self-proclaimed "practical conservative" which essentially meant he wanted a smaller government, hated unions but on the other hand was as socially progressive as you could be. He thought you should abolish income tax and tax things people buy. He was pro-choice—key word being "choice". A guy you truly couldn't label.

  • We could use a guy like him today,

  • Frank Zappa and the Dead Kennedys (and thousands of other people) against the world !!!!!! (they should make a movie out of that)

  • It's great to see how this whole thing during the 80s about ratings and the PMRC amounted to ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

  • "frank wants to put the responsibility on to the parents"

YES THATS FUCKING RIGHT YOU LIMP DICK WHEN YOU FUCK THAT UGLY BITCH WHIFE AND CUM IN HER PUSSY YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO BRING YOUR KIDS UP

    NOT the music

    NOT the government

    YOU

Jesus christ, these people have the minds of fifth graders. I can't even comprehend how stupid these people are.

  • Ah yes, and by your language it becomes apparent that your parents didn't raise you properly :P

  • Using "bad words" is not harmful, and they are very effective. Why should we strive away from something that doesn't hurt and is more effective?

If you are offended by "bad words" you should lock yourself inside your house and never leave.

You know the words and their meaning. Words do not murder people.

  • zappa... what a visionary!

    we miss you frank!

  • HAHAHA those parents need help.. MENTAL HELP!!

  • Frank says it best...Don't look to your Government to be your babysitter....Man up and be your own person.

  • I bet that everyone who interviewed Zappa was surprised by how intelligent he was.

  • the coolest person to ever walk this planet

  • @8:20 the arugment is clearly lost for the PMRC dude.

  • Stiff white men demanding their values be smashed onto an industry that shouldn't be censored in any way. "Conservative" liars pretending to want limited government when this guy explicitly says that he wants a "Big Brother" System. Frank is the real conservative.

  • Who's on your side?

    Common sense!

    HAHAHA

    Right on

    ZAPPA!!!

  • One stupid-ass question out-of-the-gate.

People,WAKE UP AND START TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN LIVES.AND STOP LOOKING OUTWARD(IE. MUSIC,MOVIES ETC.)AS TO WHY YOU HAVE YOUR PROBLEMS.

And parents, really need TO BE PARENTS!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Hahahah @ 5:40-5:50

  • Here we are 20+ years later, and now it's vidoe games that are evil. How ironic! we come full circle. LOL!

  • that guy from washington said, "Big Brother government will come to clean up your act." has anyone else read 1984 by George Orwell?

  • I would like to quote a lyric from a band I like very much, Rage against the machine:

FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME

I'm glad the rock industry won this issue.

  • Rage sucks

  • @Teajryan Yeah? Well, you're ugly and your mother dresses you funny.

  • @Teajryan wrong

  • this debate is much more intelligent and polite than the inane lofton horror story of a debate on the part one crossfire video from 1986 on youtube.

jeff ling has a greater grasp of human rights and politics and social reality than lofton and ling is also interracting well with frank and politely and frank at least gets to comment here-not just simply defend himself -as he had to in the other vid-so at least this is a proper intelligent debate/conversation unlike the other vid

  • "Or Big Brother government is going to come in and stop you". At least the guy is honest about how the federal government really thinks.

  • If you don't like something, don't watch it , read it, or listen to it. Pay attention to your kids and their needs. The government, businesses, and the church have no right to tell me what I can or can't do. Frank was exactly right.

  • Buisness and churches are also a matter of choice.. i would say, only the government should have no voice in here...

  • @JDODSON7 Fuckin' A!

  • I'm amazed that they made such a big stink over Rock n Roll in the 80s causing sex, but not ONE OF THESE FUCKS is saying anything about our 21st century rap and all these high school whores!

Fuck man, rap better die this decade.

  • There was a lot of fuss over rap during the late 80's to mid 90's. From NWA to 2pac. 21st century mainstream music (for the most part) is garbage regardless of genre. Like Frank said there are bad and good examples in every genre. It's just sad that the bad examples are usually the ones to be acknowledged by the masses

  • rap music is fine man, i think your thinking of visual rap, the mainstream stuff is all about that bullshit, i know wat u mean, but dont hate rap, hate mainstream brainwashing tunes

  • Ironic that porn spam is here!

  • My baby ain't got no money, but her snatch it tastes like honey, cos she makes that Coca Cola douche

    The Fugs 1968

  • I'll put a blight in your orchard. I'll run wild through the fields. I'll waylay your daughter, kidnap your wife, then savage her sexless and burn out her eyes.

I'll blacken your Christmas and piss on your door. You'll cry out for mercy

    Still the'll be more

Procol Harum 1970 Tipper gore was probably listening to this one in college. LOL

  • "Your problem is the modern world" Hahahahaha! Owned!

  • Frank FOREVER!

  • The PMRC failed miserably. Watch any Beyonce video.

  • Or any Brittany Spears lyric since the beginning.

  • miserably? have seen any of beyonce's videos?? ;)

  • freedom over control

  • Quote from description: "Frank Zappa's views on censorship weren't "ahead for his times" actually - but more in line with old "classic liberalism" [or what we in the late 20th century know it as: "libertarianism"].

No. Zappa was no liberal. In the '86 interview he bristles when called an anarchist and states clearly "I am a conservative". Frank was always right-of-center, and the argument he's making here is a classicist pre-Reagan-conservative stance.

  • The description is actually correct. Some of the views that now are considered common for conservatives are things that also are found in "classical liberalism."

  • wyciag z fiuta

  • Oh yea, this is from the "find the scapegoat" series :)

  • Censorship is bad no matter what the speech.

  • the pmrc needs to die a fiery death

  • besides, how deep zappa goes... it´s exactly like that.. it´s the same people --maybe just with other faces-- complaining about relation between rock and aids (?¿), that complaint before about using the word masturbation!.. which kind of sex is safe and alright with them??....oh, frank.. you were too patient for my taste, for coming and going all around these TV disasters.

  • thanks so much. long live libertarianism. very interesting (the zappa part, of course)

  • loool the sillyness of the stupid topic speaks for itself no need for commenting on that.. well done frank!! :D

  • 0:54-1:02- Kids are going to get pregnant whether they listen to rock music or not- what the HELL is he talking about? That is a positively Ionescan syllogism which makes NO sense.
