@TheDvw007 I wonder if you can really ride a motorcycle very well at all. In spite of what you may think ... I can ride extremely well. I've been riding since I was 11 years old in 1955 and am approaching 300,000 miles. Yes, what I did at 7 AM one year ago tomorrow was stupid. I set out to ride the 2 miles to the foot of the mountain to test my purchased the night before GoPro helmet camera. It was such a beautiful day that I foolishly let myself be drawn up the mountain.
@TheDvw007 P.S. I rode for Maico (factory ride)between 1970 and 1974. Even though I am 67 y/o, there is a good chance you could not keep me in sight. And the Victory Vision might be the best touring motorcycle I have ever owned.
dam dude that hurt, hate to see crash's like that, just out on a casual cruise and it goes wrong so quick, id like to have seen more of the video, did you manage to right it with just the 2 of you ??
Your moaning and groaning made me laugh, this is why I don't ride in the winter (and because it just sucks) I HAVE however, slipped on wet flower petals off the trees in the springtime and made the same noises and got pretty skinned up. My leather jacket sleeve just slid up, exposing my tender arm to the brutal tarmac LOL

They must have had different types of ice back in the 50s, along with nice spongy streets & big foam cars that felt good when u slid in their lane. Not me. I grew up in the 80s when all that stuff hurt. But you know, maybe that’s just the way it’s been here on the east coast.
I went down on the Loveland Pass on Eastbound I-70 right before the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. I noticed that the sun just started hitting that part of the road. My 2003 Softail went up in flames because of that crash.. Glad you are alright.
@ndabunka my gopro helmet cam had arrived from bestbuy 12 hours earlier. I put it together and mounted it on my helmet that night. when I got up the next morning, I put on street clothes and ate a quick breakfast, then walked outside. it was one of those perfect days weather-wise, so I decided to throw on my helmet and ride the 3 miles to the base of Mount Lemmon. the helmet cam was on and the mountain beckoned. the rest is history.

As much as I hate to see a fellow rider go down, I cannot feel bad for the bike. I love the Victory line-up, but the Vision is THE most hideous thing on 2 wheels ( well the Boss Hoss is in a class of UGLY on its own). Still, I hope you were OK and replaced this bike with a far less visually-offensive one. No offense - to each their own. And try to keep the shiny side up!
This plain sucks. Sorry to see you go over like that. :( Listening to the video I thought you had a passenger on the back.
I'm a little confused as to why it took over 3 minutes to even get started picking the bike up though, especially since it was laying across both lanes, and at an angle where oil would pool to the head(s). Inspecting damage and picking up pieces of windshield seem really low priority next to getting the bike up and out of traffic.
As a rider of over 12 years, all I can say is that was a fluke accident! It could have happened to anyone. To say that crash was your fault is, well, let's just say it's an uneducated statement. I doubt that person has been riding very long, if at all. Now I will say this, I would never consider going up Mt Lemmon when it is snowing. If you really want to ride during the winter months up there, I would recommend not going past Windy Point

Thanks for uploading, shows how things can go wrong so easy, a good wake up call for any one who uses a road be car or bike etc. . Good that you can ride another day :)
That got you pretty good by suprise. I have rode over lots of ice lots, not the best thing to do but thats another story. If you hold very steady straight and coast over it if your not on any grade your usually fine. How did that happen? Were you on a bit of a grade? Where you a little bit off balance?
Let me get this straight.. you're a) riding in loafers and slacks, and b) riding in the mountains with snow and ice on the roads. I wish I could say that I feel badly, but I cannot. Hopefully this will be a humbling reminder to wear PROPER gear, and ride in conditions that are more friendly for two-wheeled machines. Sheesh.
I lived in Cheyenne, WY for a few of years. The elevation is 6,067 ft. - so after the the snow melts it becomes ice. Then it snows on top of that ice. I have seen plenty of 4WD Jeeps, 4WD pickup trucks, & 4WD SUV's slide on roads and do the infamous "ditch dive" due to the ice. So if these big bad do all vehicles can't handle ice, I certainly don't expect a motorcycle too. Ice Racing motorycles with ice racing tires & ice screws are the only ones I've seen handle snowy & icy conditions.
there was noting you could have done the back end just came out your luck that some one was coming you would have never got that bike back up on your own
its just a shame that you did not have full gear on
Bugger! All those saying you hit the brakes have obviously never hit ice on a bike, even in a straight line!
Personally, I'd have been more worried about the next vehicle losing it on the same ice and hitting the bike again or me! Glad you didn't hit anything too nasty, though!
Giving the bike a litlle more lean like if you were gonna "cut" the corner, then getting it back straight just before getting on the ice, then, on the ice, don't try to do anything, even if it begins to fall, jus wait for the momentwhen you'll get your grip back and correct whatever leaning angle or line you're at/in.
Of course, if you know that you just won't make it to the exit of the curve and see some obstacles, just lock the rear wheel and slide th'ats better than kissing a three...
you never had a chance man. seriously none. hope your ok now. the only thing ill say is this. see that white stuff? thats snow. that means good chance of ice. take the car lol
Sorry for your crash. I live in the NE and do my fair share of winter riding. I have to be uber careful and vigilant about reading the road. I did see the ice coming and believe you would have had time to stop before it if you were reading the signs. What I saw was a shadow, that instantly would have clued me to slow way down and also the fact that the sun was shining which always creates , "black ice puddles." Sorry you left your Aerostitich at home. Also watch out for snow drifts on windy days
what i wanted to say is at the last i cant stand uo ecause of broken thinks but every othwer time first thing oh my bike and i stand that uo and just after that i clear the road i lok at me so sorry but you just slip away okay it land maybe on you but yeah and you see the ice dont tell e that ;) but anyway thats my way to see it and i know a lot what can happen and was 9 days in hospital and first 2 days white the stuff in your nose and mnitors around me
why you make so a big thing and the sound? and than yes just stand there ?? and than two guys oh how we get it up..its no truck .
i got a crash 5month ago .. i hit a car and fly over it and land on the street whtte no helmet on so and cant work for half a week and still git some broken thinks so dont understand yours . i had so much accidens and fly but that was the fucking bad boy and i dont know if i all things go away and still that i go to some doctors iam riede again
First, I love Victory products, very original. Second, how long have you been riding? Your video shows ALL THE REASONS NOT TO RIDE under these conditions. Snow, cold temps, shadows, water across the roadway. What would it take for you not to ride at that time? I am not being viscous but just trying to figure out what is going on inside your head?
I recognize the sounds (moans) of hitting the pavement all too well. I hate hearing it again. Glad you are OK. Dude that really sucks.
Riding in that weather must be New Bike Syndrome. As far as the haters on the Victory... Glad you bought one. I don't want everyone riding the same bike as I have.
The only way to have avoided that crash would have been not to have ridden that highway that day. I don't care what you did or what you were riding, there was no way you, or anyone else, were going to ride across 20 ft of ice and stay upright. Those shadows also made it very hard to see in advance. In other words, you had no chance.
Gear wise, well, you were very fortunate, but you know that and we all are free to make our own decisions.
I watched this the first time and, like you, was right on top of the ice before I spotted it. I then put it on maximum resolution and watched it again. Nope, still saw the shine too late to avoid it! On the third viewing (maybe I'm slow!) I worked out why: until you're right on it, it just looks like a shadow from the trees on the left. Before now I never could work out why it's called 'black' ice - but it really does look black, until you get right on top of it, and then it's too late.
2) Bad choice of road, especialy for that kind of bike.
I'm not sure you could have avoided dumping it though, i watched the vid a few times and it was kind of too late by the time you notice the ground is shiny, seems like you had already slowed down some.
It might have helped if you killed the throttle, clutched it, and put your feet down but maybe not.
Sorry for your crash dude. While you didn't brake(good), you were offline (not close enough to the inside of the turn) and you never straightened up when travelling over the ice. If you were closer to the apex, you would have had more room to straighten up. Did you not see the ice, or just didn't know what to do on it?
Hitting ice like that even at the slightest angle (you were in an angle entering that curve). No way anybody would have kept that bike up. Those that say you grabbed the brakes have probably never seen ice in their life. Only thing that could have saved you there would have been studded tires...Good to see you didnt get too hurt. Ride safe, ATGATT.
Lucky man, that you didn't hurt yourself more seriously! I guess my knees would be shaking quite a while after such a crash.
Actually I wanted to to for my first ride in 2011 some two weeks ago, when the roads where dry. Got some doubts when I came home from work to my neighbourhood and the less trafficed roard where I live was still very slippy. The sun had not reached it the whole day. I finally decided not to go and if I see this video this was a good descission - still too dangerous!
I am glad you are ok. As far as comparing the Vision to a BMW, I've ridden the vision and currently own a R1200RT. While they are in the same class (tourer vs sport tourer), the RT has way better brakes, handles better and accelerates better. The vision has more room for rider and passenger, but I wouldn't trade the RT for one.
Next time wear some full fingered leather gloves, some heavier duty socks and maybe, just maybe some leather boots. Sorry to see you go down, but why ride in the mountains in the snow? The temperature difference between water/ice on the road being in a shadow or direct sunlight can vary as much as freezing. Just like in your circumstance.
Others are jumping on you regarding your lackof protective gear so I won't. Although ice sucks that crash was your fault from all appearances. Looks like you went into panic mode then grabbed some brake.
@Bigfoot424 the brakes were never touched. you're not the first person to say I braked. I just reviewed the original HD video frame by frame and the right hand lever was never touched; neither was the foot brake. not having my Aerostich one-piece Roadcrafter on was 120% my stupidity. ditto for not having my Cruiserworks boots on. the fingerless gloves are a different matter ... I choose to wear them when I'm operating a helmet cam.
Were you suprised? You were riding in horrible conditions. Sun on snow means ice in the shade. Nice riding gear you squid. People think that kids on sportbikes are bad but the truth is old people on cruisers cost the insurance companies more each year and have a higher injury rate.
As a fellow Vision rider I feel for you and your bike. The bike can be repaired and you can heal up but the memories of this event will stick with you for the rest of your life! It was good to see that you were able to get back on and ride it down the mountain, just goes to show that Victory know what it is doing when it comes to designing and building world class touring motorcycles!
Glad you're ok. Tough bike. From a guy that crashed before, I give you somber advice. Buy and wear gear. You can't believe how lucky you are. I had an impact injury that went thru my jeans (only thing not covered in gear) that peeled off about 4" of skin all the way to the tendon covering my kneecap. It took over six months to grow the skin back and it's still thin there. Dress for the crash, not the ride. You WILL crash again, be better prepared to walk away from it.
@nfin8one +1 on all gear all the time. But, "you WILL crash again" is BS. Not everyone crashes. Sometimes it is rider fault, sometimes it is no fault of the rider but outside influences (another vehicle, ice as we see here, etc.) and sometimes it is being in the wrong place at the wrong time and bad luck. I've been riding for 4 years and no crashes. I may crash at some point in the future, but I may not. Too many variables to be sure about it. jcpucket: Glad you're ok and awesome bike.
This bike is heavy, slow and can't cut through traffic because it's too fat.. those are the three things that a bike SHOULD do best, but you might as well have purchased an automobile instead of this thing....
@SmokeyCough mate, some bikes are designed to do what you said, others are designed for offroad, others (like this one) are designed for cruising. in my opinion you're either a) not a bike rider and should stfu or b) an ignorant sportbike rider.
@keldorn I am a motorcyclist, i just see things more clearly than you do.. Are you obese?.. Then i might understand why you would ride one of these things...
@SmokeyCough no i'm not obese. take a look at what you said tho. you said 'heavy, slow and can't cut through traffic'. like i previously said, that bike was designed for cruising aka long travels, thousands and thousands of miles. it isn't suposed to be highly maneuverable but confortable, stable and provide an enjoyable ride. And what does weight has to do with riding a bike anyway? Did you chose your bike based on your weight? I dare you to ride 200-250 miles non-stop on a sport bike.
@keldorn SmokeyCough just does not understand long distance touring bikes. I will be 67 years old in 2 months and there is a reasonable chance that he could not keep up with me on my BMW R1150RT which has Wilbers suspension tuned by Klaus Huenecke. The race would be from the intersection of Chief Joseph and Beartooth highways northeast of Cody WY to the to the Patriot Tree in Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest located in east central California, northeast of Big Pine, CA. $20,000 wager okay?
@jcpuckett Many happy years mate and safe riding. Yeah i don't think he understands touring bikes. After a few hours on a sport bike he will get cramps and have to stop. On some SS bikes you have to stop every 100-150 Km for 20 min to relax or break your back :) But i guess he sees things more clearly than us :))
JC did you hit the breaks at all when you saw ice ????
I might expect its possible with such a stretch of ice the tires could break traction
Felt bad for you right away, you sound like a good ol boy
good luck to you , I've taken serious spills, now aching for 20 years with metal bar and 14 screws in my leg, it stays with you for life (inflamation pain at times)
@HondaAmerica1 too bad your life is that insignificant that when I respond to a nice guy who crashed with a good spirit, you waste your life looking for my ( typo) and make a stupid response like that, especially combining
the words Dumb Ass as if its a word in the dictionary as one word. Do you live in a trailer in the south
where you molest your step daughter. You have to be a young dumb punk with nothing to contribute to society. I own and run a medical clinic, what do you do ?? Really
@barymire Hey troll remember this comment someone left you...
oh its you trolling on another ducati vid nice try but just about everyone knows katanas were typical overweight jap bikes that with the exception of a tuned 1000 were not all that in fact if i remember they were just restyled gsx's nothing special at all really. DUMBASS!!
@HondaAmerica1 tell me about your quality life punk ??You even go searching my comments from another video and post it here how worthless your life is with nothing better to do If you read why I mentioned Katana
at the time compared to the 80's Ducati that was stiff and heavy steering , when I got on a friends Katana , I immediately rode 50% better No one was asking anyone's opinion as to how heavy the Jap bikes were
So thats all you got ? you must be a Young Ignorant Punk tell us your age
Everything Andy Mills told me proved to be true and more!!! My 2011 Victory Vision is better than any BMW I have ridden and I have ridden them all (at least every new model since 2002) and a few dating back to 1969. The 2011 Victory Vision reminds me of the pro football scouting reports on Joe Namath when he was a senior at the University of Alabama in 1963 - 1964 ... simply The BEST.
I would like to take this opportunity to publically thank Polaris Victory Motorcycles, Arizona Victory, Mike Schultz, Nita Buckner, Ron DeVito, Andy Mills, the Victory Regional Factory Rep in Phoenix for everything they are doing to get me back on a brand new 2011 Victory Vision in crimson and black as soon as possible.
When I first saw Andy Mills riding a Victory Vision in the 2007 Ironbutt Rally (IBR), I thought it was the ugliest motorcycle I had ever seen except for the Honda Rune, but time changes everything. Andy told me how comfortable it was and how reliable it was and that it had the best weather protection of any motorcycle on the market, so I test rode a Victory Vision in Elkhorn, Wisconsin last July and again at Arizona Victory in early December.
Definitely wear some proper gear and on top of that, thats not exactly smart to be riding in those weather conditions, meaning a cold roads like that.

Personally, I'd have been more worried about the next vehicle losing it on the same ice and hitting the bike again or me! Glad you didn't hit anything too nasty, though!

Didn't look like it was your fault you can clearly see a slick of ice when you lay the bike down. :/

ironsurfer129 10 months ago
Giving the bike a litlle more lean like if you were gonna "cut" the corner, then getting it back straight just before getting on the ice, then, on the ice, don't try to do anything, even if it begins to fall, jus wait for the momentwhen you'll get your grip back and correct whatever leaning angle or line you're at/in.
Of course, if you know that you just won't make it to the exit of the curve and see some obstacles, just lock the rear wheel and slide th'ats better than kissing a three...

Gentelmen777 11 months ago
First, I love Victory products, very original. Second, how long have you been riding? Your video shows ALL THE REASONS NOT TO RIDE under these conditions. Snow, cold temps, shadows, water across the roadway. What would it take for you not to ride at that time? I am not being viscous but just trying to figure out what is going on inside your head?
OjaiRoy 11 months ago
I recognize the sounds (moans) of hitting the pavement all too well. I hate hearing it again. Glad you are OK. Dude that really sucks.
Riding in that weather must be New Bike Syndrome. As far as the haters on the Victory... Glad you bought one. I don't want everyone riding the same bike as I have.

nooooooooooooooo :( sad about this crash..
querly 1 year ago
The only way to have avoided that crash would have been not to have ridden that highway that day. I don't care what you did or what you were riding, there was no way you, or anyone else, were going to ride across 20 ft of ice and stay upright. Those shadows also made it very hard to see in advance. In other words, you had no chance.
Gear wise, well, you were very fortunate, but you know that and we all are free to make our own decisions.
Oh, you should learn how to pick up a bike.
cerev1 1 year ago
I watched this the first time and, like you, was right on top of the ice before I spotted it. I then put it on maximum resolution and watched it again. Nope, still saw the shine too late to avoid it! On the third viewing (maybe I'm slow!) I worked out why: until you're right on it, it just looks like a shadow from the trees on the left. Before now I never could work out why it's called 'black' ice - but it really does look black, until you get right on top of it, and then it's too late.

Can we say Ouch?
1) Bad choice of riding gear
2) Bad choice of road, especialy for that kind of bike.
I'm not sure you could have avoided dumping it though, i watched the vid a few times and it was kind of too late by the time you notice the ground is shiny, seems like you had already slowed down some.
It might have helped if you killed the throttle, clutched it, and put your feet down but maybe not.
Big Cruiser + ice = bad combo
Wiesshund 1 year ago

I thought you hit your brakes but I believe you if you said you didn't. Just glad you weren't hurt very bad.
Bigfoot424 1 year ago
Next time wear some full fingered leather gloves, some heavier duty socks and maybe, just maybe some leather boots. Sorry to see you go down, but why ride in the mountains in the snow? The temperature difference between water/ice on the road being in a shadow or direct sunlight can vary as much as freezing. Just like in your circumstance.
Vintage1976 1 year ago
Others are jumping on you regarding your lackof protective gear so I won't. Although ice sucks that crash was your fault from all appearances. Looks like you went into panic mode then grabbed some brake.
Bigfoot424 1 year ago 2

It was good to see that you were able to get back on and ride it down the mountain, just goes to show that Victory know what it is doing when it comes to designing and building world class touring motorcycles!
g2rich 1 year ago
Glad you're ok. Tough bike. From a guy that crashed before, I give you somber advice. Buy and wear gear. You can't believe how lucky you are. I had an impact injury that went thru my jeans (only thing not covered in gear) that peeled off about 4" of skin all the way to the tendon covering my kneecap. It took over six months to grow the skin back and it's still thin there. Dress for the crash, not the ride. You WILL crash again, be better prepared to walk away from it.
nfin8one 1 year ago 10
@nfin8one +1 on all gear all the time. But, "you WILL crash again" is BS. Not everyone crashes. Sometimes it is rider fault, sometimes it is no fault of the rider but outside influences (another vehicle, ice as we see here, etc.) and sometimes it is being in the wrong place at the wrong time and bad luck. I've been riding for 4 years and no crashes. I may crash at some point in the future, but I may not. Too many variables to be sure about it. jcpucket: Glad you're ok and awesome bike.
tlwmsu 9 months ago
That Victory Vision is a heck of a bike. The rider is okay and that is partly due to the bike he was riding. Be safe out there people.

This bike is heavy, slow and can't cut through traffic because it's too fat.. those are the three things that a bike SHOULD do best, but you might as well have purchased an automobile instead of this thing....
SmokeyCough 1 year ago
@SmokeyCough mate, some bikes are designed to do what you said, others are designed for offroad, others (like this one) are designed for cruising. in my opinion you're either a) not a bike rider and should stfu or b) an ignorant sportbike rider.
keldorn 1 year ago
@keldorn I am a motorcyclist, i just see things more clearly than you do.. Are you obese?.. Then i might understand why you would ride one of these things...
SmokeyCough 1 year ago
@SmokeyCough no i'm not obese. take a look at what you said tho. you said 'heavy, slow and can't cut through traffic'. like i previously said, that bike was designed for cruising aka long travels, thousands and thousands of miles. it isn't suposed to be highly maneuverable but confortable, stable and provide an enjoyable ride. And what does weight has to do with riding a bike anyway? Did you chose your bike based on your weight? I dare you to ride 200-250 miles non-stop on a sport bike.
keldorn 1 year ago
@keldorn SmokeyCough just does not understand long distance touring bikes. I will be 67 years old in 2 months and there is a reasonable chance that he could not keep up with me on my BMW R1150RT which has Wilbers suspension tuned by Klaus Huenecke. The race would be from the intersection of Chief Joseph and Beartooth highways northeast of Cody WY to the to the Patriot Tree in Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest located in east central California, northeast of Big Pine, CA. $20,000 wager okay?
jcpuckett 1 year ago
@jcpuckett Many happy years mate and safe riding. Yeah i don't think he understands touring bikes. After a few hours on a sport bike he will get cramps and have to stop. On some SS bikes you have to stop every 100-150 Km for 20 min to relax or break your back :) But i guess he sees things more clearly than us :))
