  • Not sure of that synopsis of this storm, I was very young and lived in central Minnesota at the time. I remember the temp dropped about 50 degrees, from summer to winter overnight. Duluth got hit hard, but we only had an inch or two of snow. I wonder if The Anderson was in serious danger, it didn't appear so. I think as bad as this storm was, the Fizgerald would have made it 19 out of 20 times. I've read wave height accounts from 18 feet to 28 feet. A 700 footer should handle that.

  • What was the ship that sank in Niagara Falls called? I thought it was the Edmund Fitzgerald, but I guess it was in Pancake Bay -Lake Huron's north channel.

Can anyone tell me the name of the one in Niagara Falls?

  • wow i thank you all for your imput. everytime i watch this video it gives me chills ..good ones im very proud of it.now some 41,000 viewers have seen it and i know they all get the same feeling.thank you all.cheers to the fitz your truly a legend.& god bless all soals lost on that fateful day.

  • i remember going on ontario which is nothing compared to superoir and it was almost dead calm when we left coming back half and hour later 4-6 foot waves

  • i missed counted only 12 miles.

  • wow the edmund fitz gerald.hmmmm.i know how many miles they were to white fish bay.i counted.13 miles.

  • i was learning alot but this is a million

  • It is no theroy Since commercial shipping began on the Five Great Lakes, there have been 6,000 shipwrecks. Half have never been found. There are three storms the sailors still talk about: The Great Storm of 1913 claimed 250 lives and 12 ships. The Storm of 1940 claimed 100 lives and two ships. The Storm of 1975 claimed only one ship...
  • I was on lake erie yrs ago in a 16ft fishing boat, when we left it was flat like glass 5 hrs later the wind picked up and we were miles out ,12-20 ft waves ,the front of the boat seemed to want to dive into the on comming waves but it would pop up,we reached close to shore and took the shore line back, still not sure if that was the right move but im here today to tell my story.

  • On 10 Nov, 1835, 19 shipwrecks were reported with 254 sailors dead on severl of the Great Lakes.

  • I remember reading somewhere that The Great Lakes have experienced alot of unexplained missing ships - kinda like the Bermuda Triangle -anyone else heard of this theory? I live in Maine right now and lost alot of friends at sea - mostly commercial fishermen - and they were all very familiar with rogue waves etc. God Bless their families and friends to this day and thank you Gordon Lightfoot for the greatest tribute song ever!

  • I grew up on the north shore of Lake Superior and it the storms are incredible. The saying that Gitche Gumee "never gives up her dead" is true. Our Guide troop would camp near the area where the Fitzgerald sank (Pancake Bay).

Lake Huron's North Channel is known as Shipwreck Alley. I have seen one of the wrecks in shallow water when I was at camp in the 80s. It was freaky.

Sorry to hear about your friends who have been lost at sea. I've summered in Maine and it's beautiful there. God Bless.

  • just fantaskic totally awesome firmen456

  • I can tell the "Mighty Fitz" has struck you like it did me. I was 17 when she went down and remember the newscasts....thank you for remembering her and the 29.

  • Wonderful video, great song.

  • i feel so bad abotu the fitz no offence but it captions fault he new theres a big storm and so he decided to go uot ten fitz sank

  • god bless the 29 people who died on the EDMOND FITZGERALD on 11/10/75

  • Thanks for posting these wonderful comments! My grandfather Robert C. Raferty (the cook) died on the Fitz. Comments from some of you are truely heart warming. Although I was only 4 at the time, I vividly remember waving to him as he was standing on the Fitz in his white uniform. He looked so tiny from where I was standing. I also remember the emmence size of the ship, just huge! My mom told me that I was actually on the Fitz! Thank you so much jmackoregon for posting the video.

  • gives me goose bumps still to this day when I hear that song

  • As I mentioned in another post on the same subject, I was born in 81, so I heard this song off and on growing up and up until a week ago, I didn't know it was based on an actual event.

  • I think you should send a copy of your video to the Edmund Fitzgerald Museum in Whitefish Point Michigan. I am sure the many visitors would love to see it played in the lobby

You will have to check but I believe they may be closed this time of year ( Winter)

    Great Job!

  • may the dear lord bless the crew on november10 god is with them

  • I grew up in Cleveland and was 13 when she went down. Given the connection to NE Ohio, the story of the Edmund Fitzgerald has always been special to me. This morning in Mass it was cold, grey and rainy and I instinctively started singing the song to my kids. We went to You Tube so I could show them the story. Needless to say I was blown away that this was actually the anniversary. How strange!

  • Very good tribute! The gales of November remembered. 11/10/2007

  • 29 people died

  • wow i just read all 71 comments on this video im ashamed to say i dont do it often enough. i will say how moved and inspired i am from all the positive comments. many put a lump in my throat. keep them comming you tubers they are greatly apreciated. im so glad you like the video and again god bless the crew and familys of the EDMUND FITZGERALD.

  • well god bless you meatyir1, let this song be a tribute

  • The Fitzgerald took a huge wave from the stern and caused the bow to nose-dive to the bottom because she was flooding after the hull was compromised after passing over a shallow, rocky shoal at Carribou Island. This is the only logical explanation. The wave that doomed the Fitz had hit the Anderson miles behind her. It was only a matter of time. She was sinking regardless of the crew's efforts.

  • you know i wouldent belive ytou but you sound honist

  • Have you read the article on the "six fathom shoal"? I think that might be a possible explanation as well......

  • It was indeed Six Fathom Shoal.....I couldn't remember the exact name....thanks.

  • i lost my dad on that ship

  • im so sorry for your loss

  • Let's see.... How can you tell us you lost your father on The Fitz, when in your profile it says you are 26 yrs old. I'm a little confused as the Fitz went down almost 32 yrs ago.

  • they musy have saved his sperm? JK

  • Don't you dare disrespect the memories of these brave men by lying about your dad being one of them. The Fitz sank 6 years before you were born. So either you're lying, or you don't know what year you were born.

  • that means you were born in 1985-1986..........mmmmmm. the math don't work. must have been delayed sperm.

  • lol

  • I'm from Northern North Dakota...The bare ass of the united states...But all of the north plains and great lakes are so gorgeous...love this song

  • Greetings from MN. I have often spent time in Duluth and Whitefish Bay, WI and am well acquainted the The Lake. Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea!

  • Great song, great video, and for once, great comments on YouTube, I loved reading them.

  • What a fitting tribute to the men who perished on the Edmund Fitzgereld.

  • I first heard this song while driving to a gunshow in Pasadena. When I arrived I had to wait in my car and compose myself because I was on the verge of tears. A deeply haunting, sad song. One of Gordon's best songs imo ;)

  • i had a great grandfather go down on that ship and i salut him!!!!

  • my name is fitzgerald and i every time hear this i get a tear

  • A wonderful video to go along with the song. You did a good job on it. This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. It's so sad.

  • Truly, this is a hauntingly beautiful song.

  • yea it is

  • You have done a good job researching this and although I like the song I did not know much about the Edmond Fitzgerald. The paper cut outs and the pictures are very good I really appreciate the ship's size which I thought was smaller but it was big. Keep up the good work 10 out of 10.

  • same ur cool

  • Yes its very sad I was in my late teens when it happened it was very shocking to the people who lived in the area no one seems to know exactly what went wrong I heard to-many theories most are wrong afew I think come close to the truth

  • its the captions fauilt he got to the big waves and theey calapeds the ship so he is a bad guy the captions faulit that what happen

  • You are to me, a hemroid on the face of this earth.dragionkid.Have some respect kid!Go to some Hard rap songs and give your SHIT!They would welcome it. Good Luck!TY very much for posting this jmackoregon. You did a wonderful job.God Bless

  • lol i opisite ur commment to u

  • how about you learn to spell retard. CAPTAIN and FAULT are spelled like that

  • shut up

  • Great Song, Sad Story...great job Gordon.

  • Gordon Lightfoot kicks ungodly amounts of ass.

  • Very nice video, very poignant..such a sad story.. a beautiful lake but can be very fierce.

  • its the captions fault that the ship crashed and sunk and because he liked to get in big waves and he went in 1 and they died kill the caption on the edmundfitzgerald

  • so sad what happened 30 years ago im sorry i feel real sad good song poor chefs poor crew not geting to get to eat

  • more people have being killed in the name of god than any other reason throughout human history.

  • I remember watching those waves hit the shore that Day and hearing about the sinking of the ship on tv. It was really stormy and cold. I had just given birth to my oldest son 3 days before, who's now 31. Memories.

  • I remember this storm too...lived in Paradise, close to Whitefish Bay, Great video, love the song.

  • Of the 3 lakers released by Great Lakes Eng. in 1959 or 1960 - the Arthur B. Homer, or the Herbert C. Jackson, & the Fitz - the Jackson is still around, as is the Reserve, a 1953 predecessor. The Anderson was built by a different company in Ohio and doesn't look like these. The Colton Company has record of all specs of the lakers. A look at the Jackson is the closest thing we'll ever see to the Fitz, even though it has been fitted with a new unloading system.

  • Kevin - The ARTHUR B HOMER is a near sister ship of the Edmund Fitzgerald. The Arthur M Anderson was the last in contact with the Fitz and it was similar, but not as much so as the Homer. Anyway, thank God we have better forecasting and navigational technology today. Gord is such a gifted songwriter. I've loved the song as long as I remember. He has so much empathy and feeling for other people and their circumstances. These men are largely remembered by the blessing of this song.

  • Have always thought this song was heart breaking. Coming from an Island and have lost two cousins at sea. Thanks for this... Margaret..From the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.

  • GOD bless those who put themselves in harms way!!!

  • A lot of people don't realize just how dangerous sailing the Great Lakes can be, especially at the time of year the Edmund Fitzgerald sank. Lake Superior is especially cold, even in the summertime, and it's huge. If there are people in the water they don't have much chance of surviving if they don't get help quickly.

  • When I first joined there was an element of the old navy and many sailors never wanted to learn to swim they thought it was best to drown quickly rather than prolong the agony in the cold North Atlantic

  • That ship behind the Edmund Fitzgerald at 00:54 is the Autur M Anderson the sister ship of the Edmund Fitzgerald

  • Maybe you might know? What made the Edmund F. Sink so fast. It seems odd that all hands perished!! how come there we're no Survivors??

    Was just curious.

    Thanks,

    Art Ottawa CANADA

  • Edmunds fitzgerald sank in a storm

  • One of the best songs ever!!!

  • video was jittery for me

  • Yes, Some songs and or videos can quite a profound / meaning for some people. I truly believe that.

    All the Best my Friend.

  • No no, I meant that literally, as in it's playback is jittery. For me, the video's refreshing less than once a second (should be at least 20 times for normal videos). The playback was so bad, I gave up watching it.

  • Long live Gordo and the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald!!!

  • I second that!!!!!!

  • 31 years ago as a young sailor a ship in my squadron capsized in the north sea with a loss of nearly half the crew, men in the water, men trapped in the hull. "does anyone know where the love of god goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours" rang true for me and later at the funeral service I was reminded of those bright young faces before the disaster waving and laughing, but "all that remained was the faces and names of the wives and the sons and the daughters"......requiem for a warship

  • Well I guess its also a US story too.

  • Great Video! Great Song! Great Canadian Story

  • This was a really lovely video... I get moved every time I watch it.

    Peace...

  • favorites

  • I saw the Fitz when I was a kid and she was impressive. My cousin used to ride her across the lakes. This song hits home as we lost friends there. R.I.P....All...

  • wow that is fantastic i love it . the words match the pictures even down to the church program " the bell rang 29 times for all sould lost"

  • Brave sailors...Requiescat in pace

  • thank you all for the kind remarks.please mark as a favorite.:)

  • awesome song and video. I remember the first time I heard this song....we had to sing it in my elementary music class

  • This is an excellent combination of pictures and music. One thing: It might be easier to find (and a better memorial) if the name of the Edmund Fitzgerald was spelled correctly.

  • I remember this very well, it was very sad. A very, very good tribute to those who went down that night on the Edmund Fitzgerald....the legend of the Chippewa and the lake they called Getagomie....the gales of November remember. And when November comes, I do recall that sad time.

  • Always been moved by this story, and the song, put together like this, is awsome, well done !!

  • Wow. A nice tribute. I can't tell you how much this means to me.

    wow.

  • Just an awesome song!!

  • Great video, jmackoregon. I liked your 'Psycho' too...

  • I dont believe anyone could have explained this wreck better then Gordon did. Great video.

  • Does anyone know where the love of god goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours? Very poignant, thanks for this.

  • poignant if you do not know God...

  • you do?

  • ''Do you''? if you have to ask, I would say you are the one in question.

  • Actually when your 8 hours into a serious blow on one of these ships everyone is usually awake watching movies or smoking Cigs in the Reck room. You hang in as crew till it's passed.

  • Poignant, yes. Even those who feel they know God have their terrified moments, just as Christ did. Your smugness is the tragedy (and a sin, in the eyes of some).

  • I'm sure Christ has a punishment lined up for smugness: I believe he hated it
