  • Probably because he's a partner.

  • Oh, one more thing...

You should check this video watch?v=AkyRHn1ehYo

For non-wide 720x480 I use the "SAR" 10:11, for wide 720x480 SAR is 40:33, there is no need to resize since the encoder will do the job.

  • This is not true, check out my channel, I upload my videos with 720x480, one thing you have to watch to fill the screen is to use a proper aspect ratio. I use x264 (H.264) + AAC (from ffmpeg) and mux then with mkvmerge as 'MKV', again, check my channel to see how good it does.

  • That Happens to Me Too SOMEONE HELP ME!

  • can any one help me,every time i upload a video it says upload has falied and unable to play.plz help

  • I've had plenty get stuck in processing lately, which is very annoying. But if you get "failed to convert," or something like that, Artemis707 is right: try a different format because what you're using isn't working. You'll get problems with: a first pass without a second pass. There's no usable video; the first pass is only for gathering statistics! Also weird codecs don't always work, Lagarith lossless is one YouTube can't convert.

  • im having problems uploading vids :(

everytime i go to upload it says "upload saved and etc." but when i got to my videos it always says "Failed(unable to convert file)"

  • That has happened to me a few times but I got round it by uploading it again in a different format such as avi etc. Hope this helps. I'm really not that good with computer stuff but I'm sure Derek will help you out. He seems to know everything about YouTube : )

  • honestly i was only looking for how to get the HD button because im uploading in 1280x720 30 fps 6Mbps wasnt sure if there was something else i had to do, being a computer person and a video editor i didnt think i would learn anything lol but thanks for the info on HD and HQ buttons along with audio quality lost in mp3 (did not know that) and sharpness along with tv pixels being thinner. thanks. would you happen to have any tips on making a normal quality video have a little sharper immage?

  • I'm calling OUT TOO EVERY ONE WHO IS LOOKING AT THIS COMMENT I JUST WANT TOO LEARN HOW TOO UPLOAD A YOUTUBE VIDEO!!!!!! MY YOUTUBE ACCOUNT IS : jack39292

  • just type in how to upload youtube videos

  • Hi Derek, I've noticed a strange thing and this applies to this video as well.

As you say (and as I always do) to force HQ it's enough to add &fmt=18, but SOMETIMES (as in your video), the REAL HQ version is avalaible if you add "&fmt=35": in these cases the "&fmt=18" version is the same as the low quality version ( infact the annotation link you added leads to a low quality video).

Have you already made some testing with the "&fmt=35" parameter that you can share ?

    Thanks

  • I haven't played with the &fmt links lately; I gave up on it and started pulling videos from the cache. But they've actually changed things again. Getting the HQ link is MUCH easier!

  • You talk the geek talk but with a business suit on. I like that.

  • Man, keep up the good work. You have been a great help to me. Thanks.

  • Haha fat people

  • Hey, you look like 'Face' from the A-Team,

any relation? Oh, and the 640X480 tip is good, thanks.

  • thank you Derek!

  • Hey man, thanks for posting this great info, I just wanted to pitch you a word here. When the content of a video or audio program changes a lot it is said to have high hysteresis, which is I think the word you where looking for :)

So yes, the less hysteresis a video has (non changing background, use of less colors, still shots etc) will make it more compressable.

    Cheers!

  • what do to have a massive high quality is to render any of my video to "uncompressed" first, at the moment it will turn out huge file but with the right compression that convert to mp4 with the sound of mp3 or aac. It will shrink the size and very fast uploaded to youtube. When that does, youtube conversion is loseless.

  • AFAIK YouTube reconverts everything now. If you can save as an mp4 right from your editor, I'd recommend it though.

  • Say, Derek, I noticed that HD videos, like this one, are still considerably sharper when not viewed in HD. Are HD videos in HQ when they're not in HD? Any explaination?

  • Videos tend to look better when scaled down from larger resolutions, than they would look had you shot at the scaled down resolution.

  • Thanks, Derek.

  • One more question 720p is 720 pixels? How would you know if its by resolution size? Again sorry :P

  • The P tells you the frames are progressive, as opposed to interlaced or telecined. 720 is the height; so a video with progressive frames, a width of 1280 pixels and height of 720 pixels is 720p.

  • I noticed when i convert my videos with Super. from whatever, to the youtube 640 by 360 16:9, with H.264 at around 9600 Kbps video transfer, and like 320 or 440 audio Kbps tranfer rate then it usually gets the HQ option without having to have video shakiness

  • Lol when i watched it, it didnt have the option ;P

  • Yeah, it can take a while to process. They put up a temp version to get it live faster.

  • So sharp coding is when its exactly the resolution 640by360? Also more bitrate is better quality depending on compression. Also wat is sample channel for audio? How did you get it higher then 10 minutes? Sorry for all the annoying questions.

  • When you say smaller video, do you mean lower video bit rate or smaller WxH size?

  • Smaller in resolution (WxH) - the bitrate has a separate limit for normal, high, and HD quality.

  • Derek I am using Ulead VideoStudio 11 for making my videos... and I noticed that if I put all pictures in video I will not get HQ widescreen no matter how I shake pictures in that program or make them trumble lol... but If I add some videos from movies as the content of that same video along with pictures in it... I get HQ Widescreen... so it's like you said... everything with motion will get HQ now

  • I will just say: Derek for President ;)

  • I use 1440x900 but it dosnt fit whole screen.

  • Nice suit. LOL I killed it lol.

  • Dunno...I use 1440x900 and get hd all the time...does using a bigger scale of 16:10 help? or does it just increase loading times?

  • It will get scaled down and pillarboxed a little; they're not going to give you a size larger than 1280x720. The important thing is the size has to be AT LEAST 1280x720. I'm not sure about 960x720 (4:3); I'll run a test and see what happens.

  • Why aren't you looking at the camera? ;-)

  • You have a stray hair on your ear. It was hard to ignore, so it threw my line of sight off.

  • Is it possible to make a "HQ" vid without much motion? (For stuff like the video is basicly just a pic cuz the music is the important part and I want the good sound quality)

  • Yeah, I forgot to mention; do it like this:

    [your video's link]&fmt=18

You can even put it as an annotation, so when viewers click on it they'll get a high quality version.

  • Ah, thx. I can remember that it wasn't possible to link it per annotation before. ^^

When I watch a "NoobToob" video it's already set on HQ, do you know how that works?

  • I didn't think it worked either (which is probably why I didn't include it) but yesterday I say a video with an annotation to the &fmt=18 version. I tried it and it worked!

  • Thank you so much your rock

  • Thanks Professor Derek!

  • im gonna steal your lower third

    "*name* NERD"

  • to force a YouTube video to play in HQ, I just type in: &fmt=18 at the end of the URL.

  • You're right; I forgot to mention that. You can even put it in as an annotation. I'll annotate that.

  • I use Windows Movie maker on Vista, and there doesnt seem to be the option of that many aspect ratios, framerates, etc. Any suggestions?

  • WMM is too user friendly to give you an easy way of setting advanced options, but ask taofledermaus - I think he knows how to customize the resolution / aspect ratio. (He knows more about that program.) I wouldn't worry much about the framerate; in most cases it's irrelevant to YT's treatment of your video. You can always get a cheap version of Vegas for a little more control.

  • everyone where i live has over 20000 kb / s ... when I hear people complain about speed ...... heelllooo ... it costs only $ 22.03 ..:S

I really feel sorry for the rest of the world ...:(

  • Nice watch.

Thanks for all the insight. Great job!

  • this crap isnt in hd.

  • Is too.

  • I can see why this isnt' in HD. a 15 minute video would take days to render lol

  • ?? i see it in HD

  • You should definitely go into more detail on aspect ratios, it can be pretty confusing for someone just starting out.

    Great video.

  • If the video your watching aren't high quality and it horrible I know what can make it look better at the end of the url you could add this:

    &fmt=18

That will make it high quality (it might not work on some videos but it works on most of them)

  • Well the new HQ thing really stinks. What if I have a video with little movement that I still want to look good? Is there anyway that's possible now?

  • Very informative.

How many people actually bother to click "hq" or "hd" anyway? Unless you've got a fast connection or a HD monitor I don't think many people bother.

  • Good point. That's why it helps to make videos more compressible. Notice in this temporary version how bad the part looks when I didn't use a tripod.

  • Good question. I always watch videos in HQ, but I don't know about other people. I'm confident, though, that most people don't bother with the HD since most people (that I know anyway) don't have HD monitors. I always watch HD videos in HQ. But you got me wondering now what the stats are for YouTube quality.

  • I have set it up to play always in HQ, when avalaible. Too bad you can't set it too "Always play in HD when avalaible" I hate it pressing this stupid button.

Yes my internet is fast and I have a 1440x900 Resolution.

  • agreed

  • a great informational video!

  • good video, 5* for you!

  • 3rd

  • lolz 2nd comment

  • Your blog is quite informative, and it's allowed me to increase the quality of my YouTube videos quite a bit. Thanks!

(No, I haven't watched the whole video yet >_>)

  • I am not the only one that post comments before the video is finished. Wheeww!
