  • I can't donate blood. My cynicism comes from the people I meet in everyday life and I would not want to save them

  • In the uk were only allowed to donate blood evey 4 months .

    3 times a year.

  • Do yet give u the pain killer in the U.S??? Cus I really wana donate blood but the needle flips me out like I'll cry histarically

  • I donate platelets. One time this old man was sitting in the chair across from me. He left out a big loud fart. I don't think he realized it. The nurse came by and removed the needle. She told him to leave and come back in 2 months. We were laughing quietly.

  • @roseanntangrs Great to hear you went back for time #2... it went better for me although I still looked scared...

  • Your pretty i like your hair!!

  • @bnmartiol thanks!

  • I'm donating blood tomorrow... for the first time. I'm quite proud that I'm doing some good for people who'll need my blood... but to be quite honest, I'm quite nervous! X^)

  • @DelightfullyBritish good luck!

  • Hello again! I'm "tmh726" from up there in the uploader comments section. (old account was hacked, so I had to make a new one) I just wanted to thank you once more! You motivated me to donate for the first time. Next week, I'll be going in for my 6th blood donation. Almost to one gallon! yay! and I'm only 16!

  • @thatUkrainianguy that's awesome!

  • Last time I gave, I told the blood donor center where and what I was having for my big meal. There, I put in a plug for the blood bank. Maybe people will go both directions...

  • they test your blood to see how much hemoglobin you have

you felt nauseous ???? thats def my biggest fear!

  • @hatethtiloveu I gave blood the second time and there were no problems :)

  • they test your blood to see how much hemoglobin you have

  • Hey, i had the same experience for my first time, got dizzy and they had to take it out. i was also really gutted i didnt give the full 475mils, but seeing this vid and knowing others had the same experience will help me go back and give it a second go.

  • @poofyhamsters Blood has sugar, fat, proteins, cells, etc. in it. And it totals up to 650 calories. The blood bank in Houston tells you to go out and eat a good bit.

  • That was very well spoken & very good advice.

  • @worldtradecenter110 thank you!

  • @tmh726 For me, it stings a few seconds and then I'm barely aware of it. If you've ever had a blood test, it's pretty much the same. The finger stick, IMHO, can be the worst part but I react more to the donation part. The nervous anticipation is the worst part for me, the actual putting in the needle means you can relax and squeeze every 3-5 seconds.

  • I gave blood at my school and I only gave 1/2 a pint because I'm so tiny. It was originally a pint but my body stopped giving blood for some reason. I didn't feel dizzy at all, quite hyper actually(they gave us free food and I drank a lot of pop).

  • @maybeme8 It's 42 days in the US and they think they're happy if they get a three-day supply in Houston. If nothing else, they can spin out the plasma and send it off for manufacturing. The demand for manufacturing plasma is greater than the supply of volunteers, so they will pay in some places.

  • @Miss1Andy If you're Type A, they are very interested in having you as a platelet donor. That will let you donate twice a month.

  • @roseannetangrs You lucky people in Singapore. In the USA we get the needle without any pain killer. Even then, the finger prick is the worst part! And they are right, feed yourself before and after. The standard donation in the US is 450 mL, or 650 calories for you dieters!

  • @sneakers55 how come 450ml = 650 calories? Is that how much you burn while donating?

  • good for you :D

maybe you got dizzy because you were squeezing your hand too quickly or the blood was just coming out too fast.. next time dont worry so much about how fast it comes out just take it slow

Having a good breakfast is essential! also make sure you drank lots of water which helps speed up the process without getting dizzy

If you think you are waiting too long between donations you might want to look at donating plasma. You can donate plasma every 48.

  • Only one baby?! I plan to save at least 3 babies with my next donation.

  • @ExileDragon it;s not how many lives you save, but if you save a life! :-)

  • I plan on donating on Tuesday for the first time, in the US. I'm a bit nervous...

  • wow, good for you! I'm donating blood at my school's blood drive in a few weeks. it's my first time. one question: did it hurt?!

  • @tmh726 thanks! i just felt something (my blood) coming out but it didn't hurt :)

  • @roseannetangrs great. I just finnished your video, and I'm SO MUCH less afraid to donate. thanks for that!

  • I went to HSA today and donated for the first time. Took me really quick too, like less than 10 minutes! Most meaningful 450ml of blood I've ever lost :)

  • @ohheyhello awesome :)

  • Found this when trying to learn more about donating plasma. I've tried to give blood twice: once my iron was a little low, and the second time they had trouble finding a place to stick me. I've heard the plasma needle is bigger? It's hot now and am wondering if being cold made it harder to find a place for the needle? Ah, I think I will try to give plasma tomorrow and then if that works, I will try giving blood again. I appreciate your honest video! Thank you! Hope you are happily donating!!

  • Thanks for the video. I'm donating blood for the first time at my school tomorrow. Now I feel more comfortable knowing some of what's going to happen.

  • Well Done!

Don't look back. I am going for my 35th donation coming Aug 21, 2009.

  • its really cool that you gave blood.. Something sad about it is tho, that they can only keep the blood for a certain amount of time if it hasnt been used yet, and its not that long either, then it has to be destroyed as its no good anymore.. so a lot of people who donate end up having their blood destroyed anyway.. its still an awesome thing to do, i've done it and it makes you feel really good to know you're helping someone in need.. well done

  • they keep the blood at 0* C so they can keep it for a long while

  • @KownaDawg thats not what they do in Australia.. they dont keep the blood for very long at all.. which is what i've been told by the ladies at the blood bank.. thats why they are so desperate for people to donate

  • I'm talking about Plasma which could be different as far as where/how they store it compared to whole blood.

  • that's great that you donated blood! and this video was really inspirational! whenever I hear about people donating blood, I never realize that it can save someone's life. I would donate blood but right now I don't weigh enough...

  • aww thanks :D

  • Good to know more people are donating blood. I'm a regular blood donor myself, donate 2-3 times a year.

  • thats great, i'm looking to do that too :D

  • hah. good for u (congrats). I'm too chicken to donate blood. Mayb one fine day..hehe...:)

  • thanks. you should go! grab a few friends and go :D its nothing to be afraid about at all :)
