  • "You know you can make retarded scratchy sounds" Hahahahahahahaha!!!

  • WOW. i remember viewing this when i was a noob. very very good video!

  • That male to female voice trick with formant settings sounds a little like Skrillex' cut up vocals.

  • awesome vid, thank you!

  • how do you make a dry audio thingy in the chain list?

  • @lomainzz Just right click and create a new chain in the list. It'll have no effects on it by default.

  • amazing

  • incredible video. simple and informative. thank you so much.

  • At 6:03 I lol'd. 5 seconds later.. (taking notes)

  • Wow that was fast. I need a minute to assimilate the info.

  • Stephen Hawking? WTF! Ummm no. Kevin Spacey on the other hand. Yes. Definitely a yes on that one.

  • @JumpVector1 lol I'm not gonna do that. Basically due to the limitations of the audio interface I was using, I used a Zoom H4N offhand as an audio capture device while recording the desktop videos, which is of course a noisy device. My mastering target is YouTube, and the video's purpose is instruction rather than artistic expression, so I decided not to fret about the finer points of sound quality like I normally would for a music track or a professional video, which this is not.

  • @te2rx LOL! Ok, np. Great job on the Tips BTW. I come from the logic pro side of things and your tips actually make sense. Especially when first time looking at the UI of ableton; you get thrown on how drastically different it is from Logic. Keep up the good work and try to not to vacuum while you record your tips ;-) I will subscribe to you and click like on all vids.

  • @te2rx absolutely agree! would you know how to program scene changes without having to use the clip follow up action? it would be very important to me. Thank you very much and: happy new year!

  • Terrific!!!

  • watch?v=trP7STHMs3M&context=C36aacb7ADOEgsToPDskL76DRmgi0smzKomQkd4bob

    kidsos- ableton cover

  • "did you know you can make retarted scratching noises" haha

  • you're fucking awesome.

  • Help, how can I drag and itunes song to ableton so i can make a remix?! pleaase heeeelp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @evrep47 actually on a mac you can drag it from itunes then four finger swipe up on mac into ableton then drop it in...or just search for the song and then drag it in

  • Bueller... Bueller... Blueller...

  • AWESOME !!! Thank You very much indeed.

  • Realy nice tutor! thx!

  • 20 Ableton Live Tips & Tricks in 7:59 Minutes...

  • good work dude

  • Did you know you can make retarded scratching sounds?

  • Hot track at 2:37

  • no, i didn´t know...

  • great job,thanks

  • and this is nothing special about ableton. im working on it since 8 years i guess. and everyday im finding new ways to make it sounds better!

  • One question, how do you add say the same reverb to like 3 different vsts without assigning them to all vsts? like an effect bus? HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ParanormalDub1997 Solution A. Put all the VSTs into an effect/instrument rack in one track, and put the reverb after the rack. B. Make a track group and put the reverb into the group bus (at 4:51 in video). C. Right click, create a new "Return" track, put the reverb there and use the send knobs. D. Make an audio track that receives audio from the other VST tracks, and put the reverb there (at 4:40 in video).

  • @te2rx O_o my mind is full of fuck -__-

  • Thank you, please upload some more "abusing" of effects tricks - for a beginner like me everything is new. Great video.

  • Dude i really need help when you wona have like say 3 sounds in like one midi track how do you like combine them so like the 3 different sound are in one track?? HELP!!

  • @ParanormalDub1997 If you want multiple instrument plugins running in one track, you can make a so-called Instrument Rack (see Live manual), if I'm understanding you correctly. You can define the range of MIDI notes each plugin listens to if you're trying to make like a "split keyboard" sort of thing.

  • @te2rx Yes!! cheers man you helped loads! You saved me!! Cheers

  • @ParanormalDub1997 Control G to group them

  • Great!!! Had to write them down!

  • great tutorial but gayest vocals ever.

  • Did you know you can make retarded scratching sounds using Simple Delay? FUCKING LOL!

  • I am so overwhelmed-learning how to use DAWs is possibly as hard or harder than learning how to play an instrument...

  • habla bien won oh.

  • Good stuff... Time to get recording!

  • you should get a job being the next Microsoft Windows Voice

  • WOW !

  • ......SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE I DON'T EVEN

  • lol "retarded scratching sounds"

  • I need help. I have some Vst's and when I set them to their sound, they play. But when I press the stop button and then the the play one again, the vst resets to its default sound. can anyone help me with this?

  • @0rangaStang Three possibilities... 1. Several parameters have automation tracks written to them in your project. 2. Your MIDI clips have a bank change or program change associated with them, forcing your VSTs to change patches (see the Live manual). 3. One of your MIDI controllers is sending bank/program change messages.

  • @te2rx i have the same problem with some midi clips.. how i can "clean" the midi clips?

  • Would've been even more cool if you had typed the shortcuts on screen as you speak rather fast and some not natives might not get a certain shortcut.

  • @bxyify There are subtitles (closed captions) available.

  • "Do you have a crappy AI?" Hahahaha..

  • need shortcuts for mac!:)

  • @mitchyy90 help tab... and type in shortcuts. they have a list of shortcuts :]

  • @mitchyy90 Just switch ctrl for cmd

  • This was really great! Most of the stuff I knew about but there were a few gems, like the parallel fx, that I never though of before! Great One!

  • There needs to be more tutorials in this format. Most times I'm biting my teeth while the instructor repeats himself 8 times before actually doing it or moving on.

  • LFO for arbitrary parameters? damn, why is making music like brain surgery

  • did you know you can make retarded scratching sounds?

i laughed so hard, because i took you seriously until then.

  • Best Live tut ever. Taught me a lot, and I've been using, or at least I thought I was, it for years...

    Thanks very much.

  • Thanks stephen hawking

  • i am counting the days remainin. in round about two weeks i will own the suite box :D

  • Holy shit, this is narrated by Kevin Spacey! Thanks for the tips, Mr. Spacey.

  • @Darabi I know! I'm simultaneously in awe of Live's sophistication and also frightened about what's in the box...

  • @Darabi DETECTIVE!!!!!!

  • @Darabi actually, its the k-paxian who occupies his body... :)

  • I can Delete Time? @_@

    im getting Ableton

  • @Brainbox97 yeah, you can cut, paste, delete and duplicate time... essential tools for song structuring, though not as nice as Propellerhead Record's structuring tool set. It'd be great if Ableton could create something like that for Live.

  • There just ain't enough toots on the web as good as this one. Thanks heaps, great work!

  • The track at 2:00 is sexy

  • very helpful, thanks!

  • cool!:)

  • Hello! Great explanation, I have just build a home studio, and I have a M-Audio fast track pro and a live lite 8.2.2 licensed version of ableton, that I recorde my own music, I'm buying another equipment some phonic system 24 chaneels monitor reference by mixing to record band drums and classical rock another instrumentations too, but in a near future I'll need a better audio system of recording, could you te2rx suggestion another equipment? I have a simple fast track pro.how to use it w\phonic?

  • Im haven alot of trouble getten new instruments and samples into ableton live 8!

  • @TheHiddenAnswer RTFM!

  • just tried the ableton live demo version......can't believe I've wasted so much time using logic ...

  • Dude all i have is the little audio, midi blocks, how do you get it spread through the whole screen like that? if that makes sense?

  • @justmecj09 arrange view in the top right? click them 3 little lines

  • @justmecj09 arrange view in the top right? click them 3 little horizontal lines

  • check out the beat i started with ableton watch?v=_y45fGwZyxA

  • Automation!! I FUCKING LOVE YOU!!!

  • This is absolutely fucking brilo pads! Thanks a lot! Just doubled my Ableton knowledge

  • This sounds like the record guy from the tutorials minus the canadian accent.

  • This is fantastic. You make learning less than boring with your witty yet professional commentary.

  • 2:16 ftw!!!!!

  • best tutorial ever, quick but still very very very informative. Favorited !!!

  • Howard Stern?

  • FL Studio is easier i think

  • @TheDJBaas the only thing i dont like about FL studio is that there are a lot of windows floating around and i get confused as to where i leave things as whe'll as stuff disappearing unless u click a specific button to restore it . other then that, its a great program. Ableton puts everything in 3 spots on the screen so theres no " where the fuck did i put that effects window".

  • @spiderdaniel. Try midi mapping the knobs you want to use and set the parameters differenty as most of the time ableton will set you for the highest and lowest parameter so you can experiemce the full range . I found the same problem trying to use the ' rate ' knob on the arpeggiator as it was set to 1/1 and 1/128 , when really i wanted 1/8 - 1/24 . Hope it helps , solid tutorial btw learned a few little tricks that will make running ableton faster .

  • LOve the shift grabing points never knew

  • ableton sucks nuts

  • hi there..great vid!!! question on the dj aspect of ableton, is there any way to set an equal volume gain plugin using ableton effects on each channel in session mode so when i dj and slam the volume fader all the way all the volumes are at the same. what do you think is the best ableton plugin to get a better sound when using mp3s..thank you for your advice and the video

  • I'm a Logic user trying to get into Ableton -- as I like the workflow concept.

However, I find the knobs and sliders to be very jumpy, unpredictable and hard to use: like the timeline zoom that was mentioned. You have any trick that help you understand how to use them better? Why do they seem to react differently than any other DAW I've used?

  • By the way. You've got a great voice for doing tutorials!

  • @spiderdaniel I haven't used Logic, so I don't know what you're used to. Don't "orbit" the mouse around a knob-- it's up/down only. You can hold down CTRL (or its Mac alternative) while moving a knob/slider in order to increase precision. Keyboard up/down also works when a control is highlighted, and numerical values can be typed in as well. Timeline up/down is zoom, left/right is move, and where you click-dragged is your zoom anchor. With practice, it becomes a very speedy navigation scheme :)

  • Awesome tut man, Im sure I can use most of these into producing, so it was really helpful!

Now i have recently got one problem, that is, between some tracks I cant copy paste samples anymore, I get a black stop signish thing when I try to drag and drop the clips, and ctrl c'ing and v'ing just doesnt do anything, nothing happens. Perhaps you have a solution? In any case, thanks again for the vid :]

  • fantastic little tutorial, thanks alot

  • is this a speech synthesizer reading out the text?

  • HELP HELP HELP.. on ableton the little progress line that goes across the soundwave isnt in sync with metronome, its about half a beat faster, how can i fix this, its annoying and confusing!!

    please help meeee :)

  • very usefull, thx

  • thnx for the video. good one, and a good ratio between amount of info and time.

  • Thumbs up! check your dm's

  • this is really fucking good.

  • This guys voice sounds like the computer generated voice

  • Thank you for the keyboard shortcuts! They make my workflow so much faster. If you're looking for some new gear you should check out our new StudioBLADE keyboard production station. Its equipped with Windows 7 and runs Ableton perfectly! Check our profile for videos!

  • I use ableton live for the whole process of making a song. From recording, to mixing to mastering. It's such a great tool, and it makes my workflow so easy and fast. I don't need to think about a whole lot of things, and focus on the music!

  • Btw... AWESOME Video bud! =)

Took this HUGE 21-part Lynda Lesson sent me by a friend--over several hours on what Ableton can do and in 8 minutes--you STILL taught me CRAZY lessons in but moments of the day!

    Stay awesome!

    Stay YOU! =D

  • This is actually Kevin Bacon disguising his voice as Kevin Spacey.

  • How did you find the "Michelle, what's going on in Utah clip?"

    Are you a YTMND user?

  • thank you

  • xD Retarded.

  • Just started using 8 and found this really useful, thanks man

  • 3 folks weren't able to get Live 8 running on their boxes

  • <3 thank you so much for this vid

  • Future is scary....... wow....

  • Kurt Loder!!!!

  • good video....allot i knew but shows you you kinda feel like a audio god with a sandbox...can do anything and its limitless with ableton

  • retarded scratching sounds lol

  • I've been using Live for years and I still found this useful. Nice!

  • good video , thanks, what about rewiring Ableton to reason/record, and what's the advantage..... I think Abelton is better than cubase....but mixing in record is best.

  • i heard ableton was not good for mastering and eqing is this true? is there good vsts u can get for good mastering

  • @rawfflecakes I'm sure you could get away with stacking Live's built-in EQ, compressor, multiband compressor, and limiter into a simple mastering chain. There's nothing particularly wrong with those tools that I'm aware of. Just add stereo enhancement & saturation/excitation via some VSTs from the KVR Audio top 50 freeware list (as a place to start looking). Otherwise people tend to use T-Racks or iZotope Ozone (my choice). Even then I still toss Live's crazy-versatile compressor into my chain.

  • @te2rx thanks heaps! im really focusing on mastering at the moment but its quiet hard because i dont have good monitors. usually i produce using headphones and master on logitech speakers as it is the only speakers i have so its hard thanks for the tips.

  • @te2rx

Indeed. I've found Live Suite's built in mastering tools and effects to be quite good with a lot of tweakability. Far superior to Sony Acid Pro's (only other DAW I have significant experience with) built in plugins.

  • @rawfflecakes

Really, almost no Producing DAWs are good for mastering. Studio quality mastering, is, well, done in a studio. With hardware. Ableton is fine for getting your tracks to the point where they can be professionally mastered.

  • @rawfflecakes I made a song this week using only ableton live. Mixed and mastered the whole thing using ableton live, and I think the result was pretty good. You can check the song on my site (it has a pretty low conversion rate, so if you want a higher quality version just send me a mail).

  • @rawfflecakes mate, izotope turns your shitty music into a pro sounding master

  • i don't know what's more sweet. this guyy's booming voice or the tips.

  • I torrented Cubase and I must say what a disappointment... 10% of my VST's worked, the interface is too sensitive, yeah more so than ableton, and I was not very impressed with the tools it offers, except for the vocal tools. Anyways ableton live is a much better program, and lets face it Cubase trys to sell you on tools, and tools don't make the music, you do! save your money and get ableton live.

  • @thegwd I've tried Cubase years ago... like a lot of "legacy"-oriented DAWs, I found myself trying to juggle 20 windows while being tortured by its (then, dunno about now) rigid effects chain. I think Cubase is for oldschool studios full of rackmount MIDI synths & ROMpler boxes. Cubase will help you, like, organize and manage their patch libraries via SysEx, and other such legacy features. Live is part of a newer generation of softsynth-oriented DAWs, like Renoise, FL Studio, EnergyXT, etc.

  • @te2rx I find live really usable and good with synths as well, you can get loads of plugins that can manage things through sysex so you can send things to instruments through midi. Live just have everything I need! The only problem I have with live is that you can't bring the midi parameters from the normal to session view. Do you have a solution for that?

  • @te2rx oh yeah.... 20 windows thing sounds familiar...

  • @thegwd so...... my song at "notinband dot c o m" sounds like shit? done with cubase

  • @nothingbandvideos if that is what you are able to derive from my comment about the interface and usability of cubase, then it probably does, but i havent listened to your song. I was too busy going about and living my life.

  • @thegwd i just dont know what problems youre encountering in cubase, im creating totally free without a single problem with the program, but if youre looking for a click and play finnished loops sorta program I wouldnt recommend cubase for you....

  • @nothingbandvideos its not that, the timeline zoom for example is extremely sensitive, and trying to work just seems slow. Its like trying to hit a moving target. A good example of what I think of cubase is a low res vst that is old and moving a slider 1 pixel gives you a totally different sound, so you are trying to edit this device 5x longer than it should take, not that ableton doesn't have these problems, just nowhere near as bad as cubase was for me.

  • @thegwd ok I dont know what editing youre talking about, I kinda took for granted you perform something, record it, put a compress on it, and then pretty much done with it, like I told you, click and play editing music, then the cubase / pro tools platforms are useless, yes....

  • @nothingbandvideos i do electronic music, or at least try, i wouldn't call myself a musician, just a hobby musician at best lol. But yeah I don't ever record into the program, I use sample, and generate all sound via synths etc. So I can see how your experience with outside recording could be much more enjoyable. Making my sounds from scratch i sense I might be a lil more picky about end results, as compared to someone tweaking a guitar for example.

  • @thegwd it's very hard to find a good version of theses programs through torrents. even if you got the full version of cubase downloaded, it would probably have CPU issues and crash frequently. although VSTs will work with any DAW

  • @thegwd Why the Cubase hate ? Steinberg created the VST format so it must be the "torrented" version that results in the flakiness. I've got some ancient VST plugins that run flawlessly in a legit version of Cubase 6. Both Logic and Cubase have been used to make milions of records - cubase has group tracks, freezing, loop mash, fantastic hit point detection, the intuitive drum programming editor, media bay, and good scoring capabilities.

Sure I like Live also but Cubase and Logic are good.

  • Some wonderful tippage here. Thanks. Much better than the costly tutorial videos I've tried.

  • where can i see a video of how i can start a new file. I'm on a new file now and can't go forward from there. How do I drag tracks so I can make a song. HELP PLEASEEEEEEEEEE

  • hello, hope you can help me, how do i input in a clip, a note from the bottom of my keyboard, then join the note with another note at the top of the keyboard, creatting a siren effect please? PS. i only use midi

  • Excellent vid, helped me out alot

  • most monotone dude ever, but great tips.

  • You are a genius this is the best video tutorial I have seen , short to the point and very informative .Thanks!!

  • Sick! Just Sickening... Now, I can go more insane with Abelton. Wow!

  • what a beastly video. to the point and useful.

  • thanks so much dude...this is so awesome. i think this will definitely step my game up

  • you know some pile about ableton, like your sense of humor.........

  • "Did You Know You Could Make Retarded Scratching Sounds ?" hahaha

  • thanks

  • Awesome!! .. MORE MORE!! I'm thirsty for MORE!!!

  • ABLETON LIVE es uno de los mejores soft para produccir musica . si mejoraran 2 o 3 cosas, ya nadie usaria Protool o Cubase o Logic .

    Exelente video .

  • Is Kevin Spacey speaking on this???

  • I've watched this video many times and keep coming back.

    See, I'm watching it again..

  • Sick video, just learning Able.. this helps alot!

  • thank you, this was great. Ableton Live is my favourite DAW.

  • this was amazing and entertaining. thanks so much for posting

  • thanks for sharing, great for me when going from fruity loops since it's much more indept!

  • As of now; Thou shall be known as the great wise one with humor too. THANK YOU!

  • I have to admit I chuckled when you said, "did you know you can make retarded scratching sounds?".
