War is part and parcel of a world with unlimited desires and limited resources, so until we get unlimited resources to fit our unlimited desires, it is not outdated.
This laser would do jack shit against an asteroid. A missile has critical components to target, an asteroid is a mass of rock. better to use kinetic weapons and force the asteroid off course.
Correct, if you hit it with a nuke when it's still far enough a way, even if you just nudge it an inch while it's still 3 million miles away, it will fly thousands of miles off course.
dont know what your news agencies are telling, but on a site i read they told that this was that 2 days ago was a test that succeeded, and sometime before that was already a test that failed, and as the rocket is flying on, it looks like this is the failed one
It's not like it stops the rocket immediately....it's moving at hundreds of miles an hour. It obviously destroyed the missile though, if you look at the heat signature before and after.
"The Missile Defense Agency demonstrated the potential use of directed energy to defend against ballistic missiles when the Airborne Laser Testbed (ALTB) successfully destroyed a boosting ballistic missile" the agency said.
"This test was not intended to lethally destroy the missile but demonstrate the full functionality of the ABL system to acquire, track, and engage a boosting target." "The first attempt to shoot down of a boosting ballistic missile using directed energy technology is scheduled for later this year." - DefenseUpdate
its actually not that bad that obama won't build them - the DOD will make a better laser for it, an electrically powered one instead of a chemical weapon, hopefully. and that ties into anternative enrgy sources, too.
This is electrically powered. Chemical lasers are the only lasers that can achieve this power. but trust me it uses 6 cells the size of suvs for power
I was there to actually support this mission with the guys. The mission you guys just saw was only to test to see if the laser actually tracked and adjusted properly for the atmosphere. Other tests scheduled would actually fire the laser for immobilize it, and then possibly destroy it.

Qute stupid Money drain hoax!
The laser will never be at the right place in the right time with a 20 min window , , and has to shoot NOT upgoing but reentry vehicles , with an alu foil of course , So byby Billions of Money drainjewhoax!
WRONG. The system is designed to destroy missiles in their boost phase, not their terminal or reentry phase. It can loiter near an area where a missile is anticipated to be launched from and knock it out of the sky. Plus, even if it is never used for that purpose, the lessons learned from the program will help contribute to future airborne lasers of all types. They'll be able to miniaturize it over time and put it in fighter aircraft.
Then it would be by big Distance , the Losses Would be Huge , also the lightlensingdynamics of Air over big distances Would be an not Solvable Targetproblem ?
And Again the Problem Where to Fly at the right Place at the Right Time ?
And Some silver or mirrorfoil from Ebay would Do a Nice Job to Stay Alive I Assume !

i don't think there are three million miles across the Earth anyways, but not a bad point.
verbalbenji0607 1 year ago
I'm pretty sure a multimullion dollar missile would auto-correct if it's off course. You'd probably need to destroy it altogether.

The laser wasn't at maximum power, it was only a test. At the next test they might give it full power, to destroy something with it :)
