I can confirm the accusations of both Ward's, I use to ride with Allison and she had to get out of the horsey scene for awhile because of their actions. She also lost lots of bigger clients because of it.
Actually- these accusations are facts. The New York Times had an article a while ago. The fact the McLain Ward put shards of plastic in his horse's wraps has been confirmed. The way this works is if a horse hits a pole, the plastic will smash the leg, forcing the horse to jump higher. He pleaded guilty in court. He is with out a doubt an amazing rider, but he did a disgusting thing. His father Barney Ward did something even worse. He pleaded guilty to killing horses to collect insurance money.
Wow, that's amazing! That was a hugeee jump. But I have a question, isn't that hard on the horses front legs? because they are jumping so high then landing it all on their fronts?
They don't jump that height all the time. Maybe once a year, the rest of the time they school lower jumps. Once you have determined that a horse has that much jump in them, there is no reason to jump them that height all the time. So yeah it would be hard on their legs to jump that height all the time, but they dont so it isn't really hard on their legs.
Its better to ask than to just assume and then dis a whole sport and put your foot in your mouth like some people on youtube tend to do. Most people won't treat you like crap on here unless you make stupid assumptions.
Mclain Ward is an amazing rider! People who are making Bold accusations about him being a horse abuser are in no place to be saying that he is one unless you know for a fact and have substantial proof, which you don't!
Its funny how many people here that post talking shit about Mclain actually know him or his father Barney and know the whole story behind everything they get blamed for and another thing is if you talk about abusing horses such as rapping if you even know what rapping is and you would know it doesn't leave scars and who had your wonderful grey between you and the Wards its funny how the people who can never do what they do even with there "reputation".
Actually, Mclain does abuse them. I had a grey at my barn that used to be with him, and now he's scared shitless of absolutely everything. They poled him like crazy, he even has scars on his belly from it. He's lost his mind. It sucks, because Mclain used to ride him in the GPs and he used to be a SUPER nice horse. Now he's just nuts. Been at our barn for years and no change. Scared out of his mind.
In 1999, McLain was found guilty of horse abuse and suspended from competition for 8 months. He inserted two pointed plastic ships inside his horse's front splint boots, causing pain if the horse touched a rail and training him to lift his legs higher to avoid pain. Another month was later added to his ban when one of his horses tested positive for a banned substance. He pled guilty too both charges.
McLain actually is not known for abusing horses, though his father definitely is. I feel kind of bad for McLain though since a lot of people just assume he abuses his horses based on his father's action.
I believe they used this picture for a the cover of a dover magazine it was incredible! I remember watching on TV it must have been breath taking to be there
I saw that winning round in person at the Verizon Center in D.C. last October. It was awesome. I go to the WIHS every year. In my opinion, the two best days to go see the show are Friday (the Puissance is the main event) and Satrday (the President's Cup is the main event) I actually think the Puissance is more exciting than the President's Cup, so if you can go to the WIHS, try to go on Friday.
yeah, i think i sat around where you were taking your video or maybe i was on the other side of the arena. also, i think i was higher up than where you were. it was awesome though! i cant wait to go again this year!
HOW DO PEOPLE HAVE THE GUTS TO JUMP THAT BIG???? you just see the horse climb... then drop like a stone! I think 3 ft is scary... although i am on a 13.2hh pony here!
i jump 3 8 of a 13hh2 that puts in complete dirty stops more than half the time no matter how much impulsion hes got going...making me a nervous qreck nd scared of jumping too :P
He is a really good rider. We stabled next to him at WEF in Tampa. He is not a very nice guy though. A little stuck up. But ehh hes a good rider so it doesn't really matter.
If you want to see something amazing, click pause right as the horse and rider touch back down. Looking at only that segment I would expect them both to fall on their heads but amazingly they right themselves in just a split second. Its incredible and shows you what risk professionals put themselves through every time they do this.
well there was a rumor going around my area (brewster, where he lives... or maybe it's his father who lives here) that he put shards of plastic in his horses' boots. my father, who is a local horse vet, has confirmed it
i doubt that he does that. i find it hard to believe that such a respected horseman woudl do that. and how has your father confirmed that? has he PERSONALLY worked on mclain's horses?
omg i was there when that happend... man you could cut the tension in the stadium with a knife haha... when he went clear we couldnt help but give him a standing ovation!
