  • I don't know why ... But i always liked the Darkness on the edge of town ... literally !!!

Try that if you can do this sometime (with your complete safety of course) .... This song truly depicts the feeling you get, when you walk somewhere on the edge of town ... barefoot and in the lap of complete darkness ...

  • There is a darkness at the edge of my life...

  • Totally f**king AMASSING i love bruce he is the BOSS

  • damn it

    look at his face singing

he is totally in the song character

totally mad at the world just like the character he is singing about

  • @totoado That's why we love him...

  • @BrianGriffin83

    he is the fuckin best

  • this band truly earns every penny. r.i.p. clearence

  • The most beautiful song ever.

  • @NathanDrake123 I think that "Racing In The Streets" from the same album is most beautiful.

  • it rocks !! bruce forever !

  • No greater love hath he than he who would lay down his life for a friend. Now that is paying the cost. A protector of dreams. One who had a loving Mom to provide him with a tool that transformed into a vehicle that he has piloted to success on many levels. Perhaps this darkness can be someone's understanding and the beginning of light.

  • Life in 3 mins.

  • ..I'll be on that Hill...

    ...Lives on the Line...

...I will pay the cost... Calvary Hill ? ( Coded Boss Ending ? )

    ( Promised Land & Adam-Cain, on same album * )

  • What a energy have this man! Incredible performance.

  • every bodies got a secret...

  • I'm used to listening this song from a "E-Street Band live '75-'85" album. Older record, younger man and it seems to me that this song has gained more sweet bitterness, more soul to it, with each year that's passed since.

Not better, necessarily, just rougher, more bitter, more desperate, more sorrowful.

    Peace.

  • wtf is he saying i cannot make out one word

  • @TonyT361 . what

  • @TonyT361 i see wat u mean he's kinda mumbling, look up the lyrics

  • look at him here he sweats his ass off for 3 hours to provide the greatest experience for his fans

id like to see any of the artists from today do a 3 hour long rocking concert when theyre his age

like seriously bruce is THE MAN and no one in their right mind can say different

  • One of my favorite Bruce songs! Every song from the Darkness' album is awesome

  • A Perfectionist!!!

  • 2 dumbasses, how can u even think of disliking this video??

    the world is so absurd!

    Beautiful song Bruce!

  • come and check out my bruce springsteen video for city at night( i called it taxi cab cause of the video) With scenes from taxi driver, thinks it fits pretty good.

  • Keyboard Warrior- A Person who, being unable to express his anger through physical violence (owning to their physical weakness, lack of bravery and/or conviction in real life), instead manifests said emotions through the text-based medium of the internet, usually in the form of aggressive writing that the Keyboard Warrior would not (for reasons previously mentioned) be able to give form to in real life

  • Wow, I play piano and I do not sweat like that, but, I am not from Jersey.

  • 2 users have very bad problems!!

Bruce...you keep getting better and better with the years..

  • By far the best version of this song I've ever seen. The man and the band are pure classic, absolute BEST rock & roll band EVER

  • @MrMandingus YOU'RE STILL AT IT! You secretly want to suck The Boss's cock. It's pathetic dude. If you don't like him, stop watching the vids! You are pitiful.

  • @kiplinginny1 your the one bringing up Shitsteens cock therefore you are the one with his cock on YOUR brain. And the only reason i keep coming back to this shitty video is cause dickhead shitstain fans like you keep responding. Aren't you all dead yet? jeezus christ.

  • @MrMandingus bro, you dont know music. so please stop. you just sound stupid

  • @MrMandingus

    You be Trollin'?

  • Great song and great performance by the band. OK, his voice isn't perfect or as strong as it was 30 years ago, but it's damn good and he still puts all the emotion in as if it was the first time he'd sung it.

  • @timfellows2

His voice seems better now. Somehow the strain adds even more character to thesongs. His vocals are so powerful

  • @bossman24763.....amen to that.

  • He still makes you feel like the song was written that afternoon.

  • Pandapwnegee wrote QUOTE - "I just want someone to explain what makes him so good other than his song writing." - UNQUOTE ... All i want to say is if you need someone to explain it to you then you've missed the point, it's not for you, move on! But you also said... QUOTE - The only reason you like it is because when you were a kid it was the only music that had an electric guitar in it. - UNQUOTE now that just spotlights your total ignroance with regard to the 70's and 80's...

  • This song is about life as with all his songs..carrying the burden of others, not understanding your direction, Not hiding from the complex life we each live, although zeppelin is great and many others - bands like the Beatles & Bruce, they spoke to you not at you - they gave you a snapshot of the things in your world through the things that happened in theirs-if you listen closely enough its a lot about the experiences of youth.it transcends the ages - its relevant to every age...

  • @Pandapwnegee

For everybody's sake, stop being a troll. You are a disgrace. I'm sorry his voice doesn;t suit you. That's why there's garbage like Justin Beiber and lady Gaga out there. If you want to listen to perfect autotuned voices, there's no shortage of options. The thing that make the boss so good is that like Dylan in the 60s, he was the voice of the broken and lost in the 80s, when Reagans war criminals were destroying the country. He is first and foremost a cultural icon.

  • @Pandapwnegee really??? bruce is from an over 60. the fact that you think that you have to be over forty is funny. my father is over 60 and a year older than bruce listens to him. 40 and over is pearljam and grunge era. i am under 40 and 60 and I can appreciate bruce. i don't have to explain anything to you or anyone else. you need to like it or keep your mouth shut and be kinder......

  • @Pandapwnegee fuck you im 13 and he is my favorite singer of all time

  • @Pandapwnegee im 20, my friends listen to him(some of them), theyre 20, my little borther on 15 listen to him, search bruce springsteen im on fire and thats why hes good, search ghost of tom joad, thunder road, the river, man bruce just have too many songs, but if you listen to them, and you still think he sucks well go and fuck yourself and listen to the crap you like

  • @TheMasterOfSounds iam 20 aswell, and i love bruce! the man is a legend, enuf said!!

  • @Pandapwnegee

    i'm 12 and i love his music !

springsteen has a beautiful voice !

    Don't give me that shit!

  • So... you need a bottle o wine and suddenly it's not only about the music. The truth is that with Bruce it's never only about the music.... that is the greatness of that man.

  • awesome song, but can someone help me with a meaning to this please? What is he singing about?

  • I never listened to these lyrics until Bruce was honored by President Obama, and at the Kennedy Center Honors writer Ron Kovic, who has been confined to a wheelchair since Vietnam saying Bruce dedicated it to him, leaving him weeping in his wheelchair in the midle of the concert-- a proud man who hadn't allowed himself to cry for years. That was a real testiment- when I heard this after reading the lyrics I identified so much with this song.

  • Mighty Maxxxxx!!! What a great live version!!!

  • THE BOSS - simply one of the best rockers!!!

  • lol he's one of the only singers u can relate too, I mean i like Led Zeppelin but they don't know shit about ur life or feelings

  • Cut them lose.. Let them free... A very strong line whit so much meaning...

  • someone knowledgeable tell me what kind of guitar Bruce is playing here?

  • @4rainbowed without doubt a Fender, maybe a strat or an esquire.

  • @K4driver2 Yeah, I'm so used to the telecasters he and Nils generally play these days, but... maybe it's a signature Stratocaster? I've just not seen one before. Maybe I should ask a friend who is a luthier?

  • @4rainbowed either a strat, or a telecaster

  • @4rainbowed a fender telecaster with a fifties maple neck and a, maybe later, fixed on bigsby vibrato.

  • @Shaguar66 Thanks!! I wish we saw more of Nils Lofgren in these concerts. Seems that Steve is always jumping in front of the cameras-- Nils is an amazing multi-instrumentalist-- you can see some of it in the Paris '85 videos and in his own work with both Neil Young and Grin in DC.

  • i love bruce ive seen him at least 12 times and im only 17 but the count off at the beginning reminds me of ben stillers goof on springsteen.

  • @philoman2

Bruce has always been good like that.

  • He has this great power to make you feel the way he feels when he sings. His face is so alive and his expressions are meaningful and intense.

  • its magic!!! so good!!! i love bruce

  • This is 2002, the 16th of october to be exact ..

  • Cut it loose, or let it drag you down.

  • It's a Bigsby, I've one on my Tele

  • Well, I can't say he's "The Employee", that's for sure.

The UK awaits for another E-Street arrival!!!

  • C looks great here

  • I've listend to Bruce since when I was in my fathers sack. THE BOSS for ever! :P

  • LOL, me too

  • Thank you, Bruce!

  • I have become a Springsteen fan within the last two years, and after first listening to 'Born In the USA', I was very quickly more impressed with 'Darkness on the Edge of Town'.

I admire how much Bruce puts his absolute everything into his performances. I must have watched the Barcelona concert several times over and am never bored!

I have also had the pleasure of finding the following concert: Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ. 19-9-1978. If there are any other greats, please let me know!

  • It's never too late to become a fan of The Boss!

If you want to hear some legendary concerts, there is the London Odeon Hammersmith of '75. Also, have a look at the reunion tour at Madison Square Garden in NYC in 2000. Bruce sang his most beautiful version of The River there.

And if you like the song Because the Night, you should listen to the very powerful performance of the song in Paris '85 during the Born in the USA tour.

  • Thanks, really appreciate it.

  • auders, also check out Nebraska and "The Seeger Sessions"... My fave is still Wild Innocent and the E Street Shuffle

  • John Stewert just said at the Kennedy Center that Bruce was the child of Bob Dylan and James Brown. They left him on the side of the road in Jersey! He LOVED it!

  • 4:26 to 5:04 epic

  • 0:00-5:13 epic

  • why doesn't Bruce play his Telecaster in this song? Why is Stevie's guitar tiny?

  • man, you got problems..

just enjoy this great intensive important music!!

  • That is a tele. I dont think I've ever seen Bruce play any guitar on stage that wasnt a tele. I think the reason he's playing this one in particular is because of the bigsby mounted on it. Pretty sweet guitar.

  • Them things don't seem to matter much to me now

Tonight I'll be on that hill `cause I can't stop

I'll be on that hill with everything I got

Lives on the line where dreams are found and lost

I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost

For wanting things that can only be found

In the darkness on the edge of town

Wow man, straight from the heart.

  • Die kerel stopt zoveel emotie en kracht in zijn muziek, dat laatste couplet is inderdaad super!

  • he's just the Boss

  • Just awesome. What a power.

  • Well if she wants to see me, you can tell her that I'm easily found, tell her there's a spot out neath Abram's bridge and tell her, there's a Darkness on the edge of town! Amazing.

  • Seriously... OMG.... Bruce tells all of our secrets.

  • Quite possibly his best song, certainly one of them..I'll be on that hill cos I cant stop, I'll be on that hill with everything I've got..what a line..

  • ALLOW EMBEDDING

  • This entire concert is awesome. I have it on my DVR in HD from Paladia.Watch it all the time.

  • is this in 2002 or 2003?

  • 2002

  • is it sad that i know this concert dvd well enough that i've been watching the songs on here all in order? :)

  • No, it means you have good taste in music. :-)

  • tonight I'll be on that hill, `cause I can't stop

  • Greatest Song writer, Artist and Performer to grace this Planet. No one comes close

  • agreed!

  • Umm ...Bob Dylan was a pretty good songwriter...but its true...He couldn't even get arrested in New Jersey...came close in Long Branch though (:

  • Haha, they're both great...Bob is a better poet, and Bruce is better at writing about real people's lives.

  • and it should be said that Bruce has more staying power....and a much better live act

  • I do agree about Bruce Being a better writer. I do like Both of the two artists, but I also have to say that Bruce has always had a better voice than Bob

  • Dylan is maybe more poetic and ephemeral ...Bruce more visceral.

But Bruce was influenced by Dylan...the same way Dylan was influenced by Woodie Guthrie. Or maybe Guthrie : Dylan is more like Roy Orbison : Bruce

We were lucky to have lived to hear both of them...and to have had a musical tradition that gave us all of them.

  • @bossman24763 Some day if Bruce leaves us, we still can hear his voice and strenght through these songs. I agree with you bossman 100%. Some people talk about superheros, how the fly, wear capes and save the weak. Well.. that is exactly what Bruce does with his music. His words are his strenght.. and the E-Street Band is full of his superhero friends.

  • @bossman24763 Hard to disagree with ya!

  • Pure raw emotion. Genius!

  • haha, I love this song, it reminds me of my own life in various ways. ^^^

  • Awesome song, I just hope he does it when I see him in Dublin and Scotland!!

  • love this song reminds me of a broken love i once had with a girlfriend

  • quite an amazing song, one of his best ever.

  • Nobody in the world has fan´s like you my friend. Your Music is so straight from the heart and you´re the most sypatic guy in the business with all inggredients a rockstar staying for! I am sure there are lots of peope using your music to survive everyday, specially if it´s sometimes hard to make it! You have to be much more famous as you are now, rock the world, they´ll love it for sure!! Thank you Man!

  • jeez...

    just incredible.

nothing else like bruce springsteen and the e street band

  • Awesome show by the Boss!! What a masterpiece-- simply par excellence!! Bruce you have a divine n unparalled voice!!

  • Its true, his voice is increidble...

I know some people who hate him simply because he cant "sing"

But by god.....I love it and it is perfectly suited to the music he does!

  • amazing!

    thanks for puttting it up!

  • nobody in the world can make music like this....only the Boss

    fantastic song

  • I was there, my first concert of Bruce !!!

  • bruce.. you're nutz

  • For those of you that have Paladia you can catch this concert in it's entirety. I have Dish Netwrok and Paladia is one of my channels in HD. I have this concert on DVR in HD and it is simply amazing on the 42in Panny plasma and 5.1 Dolby.

  • Hi,

what is Paladia- i mean i am pretty much not an IT fool, but what do i have to do, receiving this concert from you? Thank´s in advance!

  • I've got this DVD it's a fantastic consert!

  • Fantastic show, but the sound quality isn't. I've heard some bootlegs that sound better than that.. which is a bit sad.

  • agree,d i could listen to the boss on shitty camera phone quality sound though

  • From the opening where every note is played like a blow to a broken heart to the haunting voice of Bruce to the lyrics that could send shivers down any man's spine, this song is pure rock and roll and the story of many a person. There is a dark time in all our lives, and this song echos it perfectly. Great performance too...many years after the album, and this song still works for so many people...god bless the messenger of the heartbroken and lost, Bruce Springsteen...and god damn that band

  • dude....you are the MAN! you just took every possible word that describes my feeling about this band, and effortlessly belted it out. bravo!

  • Wow! I'm not sure now what I like better, the song itself or your perfect description of it.

  • Nice. Sinatra's Only The Lonely works in the same way...maybe even Roy Orbison's works in a similar way.

  • you know its a good performance when you can't tell where tears end and sweat begins

  • Awesome.....

  • he still goes at it for 3 hours live! brilliant

  • I couldn't have said it better myself... Enjoy him while he's around, because this type of talent only comes around once in a lifetime...

  • Seriously, it should be illegal to be this good...........but I'm glad its not ;)

  • This is as raw and powerful as it gets.

  • My favourite song of all time.... Brilliant!

  • True words my friend. He always seems to be the guy who mirrors my experiences and can sing them back to me, adding that he's lived through it too. Ray le Montagne seems to have a handle on that too!

  • Everybody's got a secret, Sonny,

Something that they just can't face,

Some folks spend their whole lives trying to keep it,

They carry it with them every step that they take.

    Hit between the eyes?

  • What do you mean?

  • Just that most people have something they

dislike about themselves or something they have done that are very painful, so they hide it, maybe all their life. Bruce implies here that its a "Heavy Load"(Free)or in this song intense darkness. So for some of us the lyrics hit us between the eyes.Thats the magic of The Boss and the songs he's written. Plus the fact that he sings about normal people and the problems they have. Well thats my opinion anyway. Agree??

  • He has many themes between the ideas of escape, betrayal, friendship, and the felling that everyone gets into an inner-struggle at some point they have to either overcome or try to run from. (Of course, I can't fully explain his music within 500 characters, I'm sure it's the same for you.)

  • No.
