thank you so much for the review. ive had a D90 for about 10 months and was thinking of updating my camera, but now i think i will go for better glass first nikon 24-70. very helpful
Why you compare the 24-70 2.8 to a 18-55 dude seriously! Thats like comparing Megan Fox to Oprah, compare it to another pro lens but 18-55 or 18-200 next to a 24-70 is nothing, put that baby on a D700 and they're crap.
Please tell me you're not connecting the 70-200 to that bracket using the camera mount. There's a reason the lens has a tripod plate. You should NEVER be doing anything that makes the lens wobble and put all the stress on the mount.
Hey, which lens would recommend for an FX camera like the D700? 24-70mm or 70-200mm VR II? Probably the question sounds a bit stupid since these lenses are for different purposes, but if you were to buy only one of those, which one would be your pick? thanks.
Hi Nat, want to get a 2.8 zoom around 24-70 but wanted to know your opinion on other 3rd party lens ie, Tokina,Tamron,Sigma (which make is best). Will probably go for Nikon but who knows.
you hate slow auto-focus but you shot stationary subjects. You have expensive gear but you images are mediocre. Hmmmm. I think you are only a gadget fan and you are not in to photography at all.And stop hating the 18-55.. I bet when you first got it you were in love with it. Its; cheap but it can take great shots if you can manage the camera well. people make photogrraphs , not gear!
@toffetots It definitely can't compare to the nikon. apart from the possibility of compatibility issues, 3rd party lenses in general pale in comparison to Nikons.
@toffetots sharpness at 2.8 is notibly different other wise the Sigma is great... if you're on a budget, go for sigma.. get used to it, use it, and save up for a nikon a few years down the line...
Hi Nate, how often do you use the 24-70mm lens with your D90. I am thinking of investing in this lens and I have a D90 and know theoretically, the lens is more appropriate for a FX Camera. I will invest in a FX camera in a couple of years or more.
Are there any minuses to using this combination (DX camera & lens)? Do you feel that you need another lens to cover any wide angle shots?
Thanks for posting these videos up - you bring up good points that I wouldn't have thought about.

@guzzie808 There's no disadvantage at all for using this lens with a DX camera. If anything, it frees you from any vignetting or other bad things that occur in the corners of the frame when you use it with an FX camera. This lens is plenty wide enough for most general photography too, so I'm sure you'll do well with it.
@kosarose There's no one filter that works best for this or any lens. Different filters can be used for different effects and situations. I would recommend a digital UV filter for general purpose photography for this and every lens.
Hey Nate! Could you please tell me how long the lens is from the mount to the end of the hood? I'm only able to find the dimensions of the lens on its own and I kind of wonder if it would fit in my Kata DH-425. My 70-300 VR actually does, with the hood reversed. :)
@xxAO2012xx I don't have any big secrets, no high-paying job or anything. I'm 18 and I just save my money very meticulously. Although, a good chunk of the money for this lens came from a wedding I shot.
I don't have a flickr, you're probably the millionth person to ask ;) I'm planning to do a video of all my stuff, I'm just waiting until I get a few more toys before I do, because once I get those, I'm done buying gear until my D90 dies.
@bridgeoverwater627I got a d300 for a steal price and it is amazing but, hardly something you could walk round with round your neck (get mugged or you neck snaps due to weight of the beast). I'm thinking of getting a cheaper consumer dslr for running around with...any sujestions I could buy the d3000 body for £300 new or could get an old d40/50 of ebay...what do you sujest.i dont want to spend alot as would only use as a run around point shoot snappy one rather than taking pro stuff with D300?
I can understand your plight, I once made the mistake of walking around Washington, DC with my D90, battery grip, speedlight, and both of my pro lenses... Not smart... If you can get the D3000 for 300 pounds, that's a good deal before you buy it though, play around with it to make sure you're happy with it. It's probably going to seem terrible next to the D300 though, so try to stay objective.
Also, I typically don't advocate buying cameras secondhand, I know a lady who bought a D50 used, and she blew her shutter. If you're considering buying used, keep that in mind.
what do you think of Nikkor 17-55 mm f/2.8 Lens vs. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8g lens?? I'm thinking of getting that nikkor 17-55 instead because of price, weight, and the wide-angle...is the picture quality sharp as the 24-70mm coz ive been reading bad reviews on 17-55mm?
I've never personally used it, but in the end, it's all about your opinion. Try it out before you buy it, and if you like it, then go for it. Never set too much store by what other people say, it's just one opinion. What matters is that you get what suits you best.
@bridgeoverwater627 cheers for the advice! hmm your prob right about getting a used camera especially an older (cheaper) one as shutter will be on last legs and will be more trouble than it's worth....i will probably go for a newer second hand if i do go that way...but then again will prob be similar to d3000 body new.. thanks again and keep your vids coming...
Really thinking about buying this lens. I currently only own a 50mm one and I really REALLY need a zoom. I take a lot of soccer photos and wanted to know how far can this lens zoom? Like if I am on one side of the field could I zoom on and get a close up of a player's face if they are on the other side of the field?
I've never personally used it, but such 3rd party lenses are said to be of marginal quality, and seeing as lenses are Nikon's hallmark and that this is one of their finest, I'd say it's probably not that great. Don't just take my word though, test both out in the store and see what you think.
My replacement lens is flawless. Don't let one random dud ruin your interest in buying this lens. If on the totally random chance you get a bad one as well, Nikon will almost certainly replace it without a second thought. If you are concerned because you've heard other reports of the same problem, you'll know what to look for when you go to buy yours: ANY resistance to zooming, particularly at the wide end, is bad. This lens should zoom effortlessly. Don't be discouraged... go for it!
In this example, I think I was referring to auditoriums, but gyms are bad too... I've actually had to try flash in the gym. The results weren't much better than high ISO... This is a GREAT lens for shooting gym sports like basketball though. I had to use my 70-200 before I got this one, and it was always just a bit too long.
Good review. I'm thinking about getting this lense for my vacation in Hawaii. I'm surprised by the shoddy build quality for a Made in Japan professional f/2.8 lense - the first one you got.
Rugby, yeah, I'd say so. Wildlife might be a bit iffy, like if you're doing animals or something, you won't be able to get REALLY close in on them, but it would probably do ok. maybe consider the 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 if the slow aperture isn't a big concern for you.
