  • amazing!! and beautiful... in my personal opinion, though, the orchestra is way too loud. I could barely make out some of your runs, even though you were definitely playing with full sound.

  • Took me 3 years (from nothing to learn this piece, but still in progress).

  • @swedishgir006 you might want to try a tuner to find the notes and then experiment around with it i know that i have done that with my flute =)

  • This is gorgeous, You're so talented! You make every song you play sound so effortless! I can't tell you how many times I've watched this video. I'm doing Chaminade's Concertino for my High School All-State band and orchestra audition this fall so this is a big help! And hey, I have the same flute as you! I love my Miyazawa. Anyways, you're incredible. Maybe one day I'll be as talented as you. maybe. :)

  • Very beautiful playing, I am actually performing this tonight with a high school band. I really wish the orchestra was softer at some places as there were points where you were completely inaudible compared to them. Overall superior performance.

  • oh my that was great! I would love to learn to play like that lol but I dout with 3 years of high school band left it will happen lol maybe :)

  • I learnt this after taking my grade 8. Such a nice piece of music, love playing it.

    Helen

  • Wow. your such a good player. How old are you? lol

    You have amaing talent.

  • i can only find the first page online, and it isn't the edition i need... can anyone tell me the measures for letters c j and i think g for southern?

  • good.....

  • Helen is beautiful, very well done too ... I wanted to play such a day! but I prefer to listen rather! My Congratulations! I am amazed by his technique!

  • le falta ritimica...

  • I keep trying to comment on this but it's not working! I'm persisting because I need to say how wonderful this is! Your tone is absolutely beautiful; I'd die happy I could play like that in the 3rd register! Great vibrato too. Overall a really touching performance. You're so good you make me want to give up the flute! I won't though, I'm actually waiting for the sheets for this to come in the post so I can (attempt to) learn this too! It's beautiful Helen, well well well done.

  • This is my all time favourite piece to play on the flute!

You play it soooo well and make it seem so easy! ^_^

  • Bravo, are you famous? You must be :)

  • where do you get all this flute music from.

    you're bloody amazing. =D

  • Once again, an incredible performance!

I wish the orchestra was a bit softer, they sometimes cover up your wonderful playing.

  • i agree....

  • good job!! i love it!!! =]

    --Khenya Dean!

  • I like your playing... you are really good!!! I'm playing this piece now and it's not easy ;]

  • you make that seem effortless. accompaniment was wonderful as well.

  • So beautiful...

    thanks for th music!

  • You are an amazing flute player!I read about you in a brio article and when I saw you on the cover I get so excited that there was a young girl going places on flute! I decided that if you could do it, I could, and made it my goal to do something outstanding with the flute. So this year I entered a concerto competition and do pretty well, so I was selected to perform the Chaminade concerto with my town's Philharmonic. Thank you for being such a great inspiration you'll go far!!

  • I wish I could play like you.

  • She was totally in tune while playing with the orchestra.shes talented.

  • great :)))

i just wish the orchestra was a little softer.

  • wow. I'm learning this peice now, and I and no where near as good as you, however i'm only 14. But seriously you are amazing. Never give up.!

  • I like your stage presence and stance. It's so much better than seeing some flutist wobble all over the stage in order to keep rhythm. You play very well, too.

  • yours is the more towards the emotional side, after hearing some different people play this piece, but its good, shows your maturity.. :)

  • how on earth do you memorize all that?!!

  • some ppl have good memory..i have good memory to and once u have a tune in ur head its not hard to forget it..for me its like crazy because i can hear soemthing once and then be able to play and memorize a whole 2-3 min song..lol my teacher usto hate me because sometimes she would forget a note and i would correct her without looking..but yea this is very lenghty..she is amazing

  • I find it okay to memorise things, if you play a piece for quite some time, your fingers do get used to it and it comes naturally. This is an awfully long piece tho! Its simply amazing! Such beautiful tone and presence :)

  • Very hard to memorize but if you think about, really it is easy to break down into parts. There are four pages. 1st and 4th page are almost identical with some differences. 2nd page you can break down into two parts, slow part and fast part. The fast part on the 2nd page is the very similar on the 3rd page. And then you learn the cadenza and you have it.

  • Hm I suppose thats true!

  • wow!!! absolutely beautiful!!!!! i'm very impressed!!! wow....

  • good job!! this is a hard piece.

what type of flute do you play on??

by the way, some of the comments people leave on your videos are disgusting, it's so brave of you to put up videos of yourself playing in the first place (i'm too scared to it myself, but my goal is to eventually get some flute videos of myself up), and then they shut you down. ugh. it's not like you credit yourself to be some incredible flautist who's just the best, you're only putting videos up - and they're good!

  • You're excellent. I'm working on this piece right now. How long have you been playing?

  • good flute, but orchestra was terrible..

  • Helen! I just saw you on PBS on "From the Top at Carnegie Hall".You were incredible.

  • i was really nervous because my boyfriend was in the audience and hearing me play for the first time so i made a lot of mistakes and had trouble breathing haha!

  • You did terrific. What was it like when you first heard you were going to play at Carnegie hall, being filmed for PBS, and work with Opera star Denyse Graves?

  • I was so surprised that they actually chose me! It was so unexpected and an amazing thrill. It gave me butterflies when I found out! I was so excited broadwaymike92.

  • That's so adorable, Rofl.

    Incredible, by the way!

  • very, very nice. your high notes are played so sweetly, i love it.

  • Wow. This was amazing. Who wouldn't be nervous? You memorized it for goodness sakes!

    Great job!

  • Very talented, but a bit rushed and soul less for me. Your sound is great but a bit penatrating at times, more tone colour and musicality. RELAX!

  • I don't understand why someone would thumbs down this comment. This is very good constructive criticism....

  • do trills have to be that fast ??? or does it depend on the speed of the song...?

  • No trills don't have to be that fast.. she does trill very quickly! Trills are just as fast as you can and making sure you can hear both notes

  • nice job, could use some work though. Many spots were rushed, good thing there's a conductor to stay in tempo bc her tempo is going from here to there. Overall nice job

  • That was absolutely fantastic! Congratulations! I wish I could play like you! How long have you been learning?

  • I love this piece so much. I've been trying my best on it. It's really complicated though.

  • do you know you tongue? Please tell me cause I really wanna know! How do you tongue cleanly and make it sound good?

  • well, i don't do anything really, i learned how to tongue by spitting rice. I'm sure that helped me. what i did was get a big bowl of rice and went out on my front porch. then i stuck the rice on the tip of my tongue and tried to spit the rice as dar as i could! don't let any saliva come out when your spitting. haha.

  • i personally tongue by lightly tapping my tounge on the roof of my mouth (thats how i would explain it anyways) i find it comes out lighter than most :). if anyone disagrees, feel free to tell me, but dont get all offensive :)

  • BRAVA!

  • how do you tongue like that? Can you tell me please? I love your high notes.

  • Very well played! I loved playing that piece with an orchestra. Your tone is incredible in the high register! I wish I could make a sound like that!

The orchestra were too loud at times though. Also, the cadenza still needed some work. Try not to rush through it so much - really enjoy it! You can hold the last trill (the C#) for the full semibreve as well. Occasionally the tonguing wasn't very clear also, particularly in the cadenza.

Other than that, an impressive performance!

  • now that was impressive! :-) your high register is so clean and the tempo changes were spot on. makes me want to practice even harder!

  • omg im not even close to even getting the sound to sound so pure when playing the extra high notes :(

  • Its really great to watch you in action in a preformance!!!

  • wow, this gave me the chills! such soulful playing..

  • Great! :] That must have been a great experience for you

  • Beautiful!!! Many of your performances have inspired me. I have now been working on this song for about 4 months and still can't get half of it!! Amazing.

  • Nice job. Congratulations.

  • Very well Done! Try to bring more of your own style to the cadenza.

  • I do bring my own style to the cadenza, I was just nervous and I messed up.

  • very well done helen. I think you are going to be a very very famous flutist. You are an inspiration. You play beautiful.
