I've seen much larger snappers that are probably closer to 150. Maybe over, but I do not believe that this is close to 150. The largest snapper I ever saw was in Northern NJ and had died on a bank, maybe of old age. Dead serious, that old guy had a head bigger than mine... Sad...

It's amazing to think that this creature has lived for 150 years..that puts it's birth at 1860. That was when the Civil War started! This creature has seen The Civil War, the Plains Indian Wars, and WW1 and 2 and everything since. It's truly amazing to think that this turtle is living history.

@turtleheninny Probably not this specimen, but I believe some of them live 300-400 years easily. This one looks pretty young for his size, he's large but I don't think he's over 100 pounds.

@StarfyProductions It's hard to gauge the exact size. I'd say it's about 75-85 pounds but it could be larger. You can see the massive bulk of the tail near the shell, it's a very large example of a male. Most males don't have a tail as substantially bulky as that. The shell is very pronounced for a turtle that has a lot of age to it. It did a large amount of growing at a mid adult age but still has alot of growth available based on the shell/ skull. It came from a very healthy ecosystem.

It can live that long, even longer I'm sure, but it's probably less then 50 in my opinion. The shell structure of the spikes are still too strong, it's not full grown.
