PS: The great production of this reminds me of parts of films like Alice's Restaurant or Easy Rider (the psychodelic, bright colors, etc, etc). i know this is John Quale and not Poppycock but i don't think this coming out will be good for his career. LOVE the song!..not the video..and i LOVE Poppycock..but middle America might get turned off by this portrayal..just my opinion..but i DO love the song!

@satori03 Oh, I've seen worse. And it happened a long time ago. Just look up Madonna's old stuff, particularly the issues surrounding "Like A Prayer" and "Hanky Panky" as well as her "Sex" book. Controversy didn't kill her career: it made it.

@satori03 Call it a feeling, but he'll be fine. IMO, the folks who'll really get set off by this sort of thing... probably wouldn't have been that into him to begin with. And if there's any actual controversy, quite a few people will gravitate towards him BECAUSE of it, not in spite of it.

(This isn't even his first go-round as a potentially controversial Jesus, BTW. That may be part of why, to me, this just isn't that big a deal.)

If it helps put you at ease, though, I'm a real live Christian. A liberal one, but still a Christian. ^^ Personally, I found this video too silly to be offensive -- kind of like watching a parody of stuff that's supposed to be offensive. (The, ah, "artistic merit" of Mr. Quale's exquisite physique also helped sweeten the deal. ;))

@satori03 - I think it's the Uncanny Valley effect. It seems like this *should* be offensive because it's so outrageous, but because of its silliness, it doesn't quite get there. I don't sense any malice here -- rather unusual for a work like this. But because it seems like it should be offensive, it feels like someone, *somewhere* should be really offended. ^^

I agree with you. The "middle America" probably will take huge offense. Like you, I am religious, but view this as too silly to be offensive. I think that they should have skipped putting the guacamole on his face - - and then, they could have made this a lot more SEXY. Maybe put some Mary Magdalene in - something a bit more provocative. Or maybe some of the historical Jesus stories enacted, in a sort of "retro" way. More sexy, less silly - would sell better.
