This is a prime example of one of the "halo" cars that Ford produced at that time. Sure the earlier Ford retractable was cool and this engineering was later adopted to the Thunderbird. But this was a Lincoln Continental. In the day of excess, this car ruled!
The 60's lincolns are one of my personal favorite cars the suicide doors, convertible, all the chrome it was the whole 9 yards you know its great car when j.f.k had one him self.
@NadrianATRS True.. but that's the point, dear. It was 1960. We weren't IN such a rush to get 'through' everything.. one simply enjoyed the moment. You were rich, if you could afford one - hence, one didn't care if the top went up quickly, or not.
@willem01 Well, Willem - Lincoln only had the convertible top with the "Breezeway" rear window too - Thunderbird from 1958-60 also had the 'stow-it-in-the-trunk' convertible top, and the infamous "Skyliner" retractible Ford had something similar. They were all part of the FoMoCo genius back in this era.
Top operation was impossible with the rear window lowered. In that situation, the window automatically rises to its top-most position before the top cycle begins. The operator in this video need not have pushed the window button and then pushed the top button. The top button alone would have first raised the rear window. Amazing machine, indeed.
It cost $16 in gas just to make this video! Lol I loved it, that is an amazing piece of work there, looks better than most retractable tops on the market today!
That's a great looking Continental and the top operation has always fascinated me. I had a 58 convert back in the 60's and loved putting on a show with the top for people. I can't wait to get another one. Pete
No, the 4 door converts started in 1961. In spite of the hugh size of the 58-60 cars, a 4 door would not have worked with the top well mech. Of course, if they had it fold in the trunk......
Very nice...

Lincoln had something no one else did in this convertible. Wish my 1993 Allante's top worked this well!

With cars this magnificent, I'm amazed Cadillac even stayed in business...
Mrphatbastard1 4 months ago
@Mrphatbastard1 One might think so. But back then and even during the 1950's, Caddy outsold Lincoln, Imperial, Packard combined.

Incredible - that's the same technology they use in the space shuttle to open the solar panels in space it seems.

looking at your commentary--does the top have power snaps to release it or is it like most convertibles where you must snap it down manually?

All those people who think their retractable top is something new and just developed, need to see this film.

@mickeynraleigh Unfortunately yes. "Modern" kids need McDonalds, microwaves,
cell phones & Ipods. Back in the day real men took their time. Never had much
problem with P.E. in those days either, did we guys?
