  • It's fun to joke about these for people who don't need one. I have slept in an iron lung since I had Polio at age 5. I am trying to find a new spiral collar for mine. If you know where I can get one, plz message me.

  • If you are in the Atlanta area and want to try it contact me and we can set up a time. It will be an experience like you have never had before.

  • I'd like to have a try. Hope you will keep this iron lung for a long time until I get to your home. Haha. Maybe before that you can show us how to operate it.

  • I would love to try one sometime. I dont suppose that you are anywhere close to ohio and would be willing to let someone give it a try?

  • I have an open invitation to all polio patients that want to experience the iron lung or was in one many years ago and want to re-live a part of their past. Anyone else that wants to try it is welcome too. I live in the Atlanta area.

  • Should I re-paint it or strip all of the paint and finish it in brushed steel?

Strip (sand remover) all paint and use spray, not brush. Use good paint that work on steel. Don't forget primer. I prefer to let "Powder Coating" people do the job. Good luck.

  • I did that on the last one I restored. I stripped all the paint and prepared it like a car body. Instead of using a paint gun and compressor I use about 40 cans of Krylon "Bright Idea" yellow. The color was almost a perfect match to the old color. And, knowing that it may need to be touched up occasionally, it would be easier to give the curator of the museum a couple of cans of the paint. Powder coating was not practical due the size and weight of the iron lung.

  • Ebay has one about twice a year for $400-$1200. I paid $400 for my first one but the trip and truck rental was another grand.

You can get in and out by yourself but it's easier with help. The bed and head plate rolls. Get on the mattress, put your head through the head hole, tighten the collar then roll the bed back in the tank.

Relax and it will breathe for you at a low vacuum. Increase the vacuum and it's harder to resist. Increase it more and you have no choice but to breathe.

  • so if you relax will the machine force you to breathe? So tell us if one were to find a used one etcetera how much does one cost? also do you need another person to operate the machine while you are inside or is there some way to get into it and and then turn it on? For that matter how do you get in?

  • I want to be your Cabbage Patch doll :) I was thinking of covering mine in leather. Maybe real leather on the head plate for the sexy aroma and fake vinyl on the rest of it. Not sure about the color Brown or Black ?

With all the chrome and stainless steel polished to a high luster it would a real sex machine :)

Oops, It's time for my nap... adjusting to 12

  • Have yiu ever tried being inside it while its on?

  • Sure, I've spent a lot of time in both this iron lung and the one I restored last year. This one is more comfortable because it is for an adult. The restored one was a child's size. Surprisingly, it can be extremely relaxing if you let the machine take over your breathing and you allow yourself to enjoy the experience. Occasional I sleep in it but most of the time the sessions are only an hour or two.

  • I did not know that these devices are still around...are there still polio patients using these machines? They must be small (yet large) enough to fit in someone's house?? Are they pretty costly??

  • There are still a hand full of polio patients that use the old Emerson or Collins iron lungs. There is also a modern iron lung called the Porta Lung used by some polio, scoliosis, Muscular Dystrophy, and a few other conditions that only negative pressure respiration works for them. My 1950 Emerson was about $10,000 when new, about the same as an average house at the time. This one weighs 740 pounds, is 7' long, almost 5' tall and 31" wide. It will go to a new museum in Warm Springs, GA.
