Dude a conductor is like a coach. He coach people how to play. Like a football coach. Can you say that a football team can just practice and play without a coach. They'll fight among each other. Of course during the actually performance conductor are not need if the players are professional enough, but it looks cool when a good conductor dance around. Amusing if you well. Add to the fun. This guy was okay.

the conductor helps to conduct the tempo and make things go right. if they didn't have a conductor they might mess up and then forget tempo or something

not so much the time, but sometimes time changes need clear direction. A conductor gives the music direction, commanding through body language how he or she internally hears the music. The job of conducting means you must hear the music as you hear it over the physical sounds whilst still being able to accurately criticise immediately through gestures. It is a wonderful position with so much power.
