  • Must be some damn good ice cream.....

  • I recognize this from ":Gumby Baby Sits".

  • Man I wish real zoo animals were just as smart!

  • Why do people try to debunk this. This is a CARTOON and is not real. This is a way to teach kids COOPERATION

  • comment on every utube video ever made: loves it!

  • The fact that zoos were really like that back then makes me sad. Compare this to the elephant asking which way to the zoo.

  • I just heard the music at 1:07 on "Gumby Babysits!"

  • Damn! Nobody seems to have that a-cappella song about zoo animals sung to the "12 Days of Christmas" tune.

"In the first cage at the zoo, this is what you'll see ..."

  • He is worrying about germs from a coin (although it just occurred to me that he may have been worrying about swallowing and choking on it), but saws through metal bars with his teeth. Brilliant. :P

  • tiny question....why does the male kangaroo have a pouch?

  • He's a cartoon, so he can have one when it's convienient. Of course it could also be a deep-voiced female?

  • did no one else notice a MALE kangaroo was the one with a pocket?

  • if they do sneak back in, the zookeeper is gonna be mighty puzzled by the sawn-off metal bars

  • cooperation !!!!!

  • Quotable quotes:

*looks down as if just noticing.*

    Look! I have a pocket!

    Do we have a rope?

No, but we have a snake!

Well I won't hold it in my mouth. Thats dangerous!!!

  • I rememeber this! It's been ages.

  • yep females do and they have them only at birth.

  • I always laughed my ass off at that line drawing animation part as a kid.

  • I'll assume they're breaking out of the zoo as the title says- though it does suspiciously seem like prison... LOL :-)

  • Yeah i was wondering that the first time i saw this clip.

  • I'm not sure if they're really trying to escape from the zoo (even though the alligator said at 0:09 they can bust out of the zoo maybe meaning there's a way to get out of the cage to have ice cream) since they live there, or, if they just came out of their cage for a quick second just to get some ice cream for a snack or as their dessert since the zookeeper just gave them their dinner.

However, when I was very young, I thought all three of them were prisoners who were escaping from jail.

  • Your idea makes sense to me. The jailbreak thing is probably delibrate--who would want to live in a cage. Admittedly it looks like a very well run zoo, just no ice cream!

  • Real brilliant, guys...The ice cream man asks what you want, and you tell him..."Ice cream." I think that much was already understood. :>

  • The human food could me animals sick or death.

  • True, but these are anthropomorphic animals, so does it still count?

  • Male kangaroos don't talk or wear jackets either.

  • It's obviously a prison.

  • That,s what zoos were like in the old days. In fact when I saw movies of the last Tasmanian tiger n the Hobart Zoo I felt sorry for it because it looked like it was in a prison too!

  • All the same, I've the feeling the animals will sneak right back into the zoo, prison or not. Maybe the zookeeper didn't want them snacking after supper?

  • For a minute, I thought the man talking in the end was the zookeeper waiting to lock them back up.

  • Me too, so I was quite relieved when his identity was revealed.

  • Oh my gosh! I haven't seen this since I was a way little kid! Thank you for posting this!

  • That was cute! They just wanted some icecream!

Yet still, that was a male kangaroo! Male kangaroos do not have pockets. Isn't Sesame Street supose to teach children about these things?

  • I guess the director didn't know that.

  • No... but it did teach me not to put pocket change in my mouth!

  • As if sawing through the bars was any *less* dangerous o_O

  • I should have made my daughter watch this! She got a dime stuck up her nose, while her friend swallowed a quarter. Both dime and quarter were recovered without major incident, both girls suffered nothing more than major embarassment. ;-)

  • how did you recover the quarter is what i want to know.

  • @kevlar8686

Since she swallowed it, I think you can figure out how it came out later.

  • True, and to this day I do not put coins in my mouth to carry them. A friend of my daughter actually swallowed a quarter once, fortuanately with no ill effects save major embarassment.

  • Actully a kangaroo,s pocket is called a pouch and yes males don,t have them.

  • That's right. Is it bad or sexual to say "pouch" referring to a kangaroo on a kids' show? I know a kangaroo mascot for a local baseball team, it's a male kangaroo character but he has a pouch... or as that 'toon kangaroo calls... "a pocket!"

  • Oh, and that kangaroo speaks with an American dialect, too. I thought most cartoon 'roos spoke with an Australian accent, "mate"?

  • If you look closely, the kangaroo's pocket has these button things on each side. Maybe he went to a tailor/surgeon? A pocket is a handy thing to have, so why wouldn't he have one installed?

  • What's the name of the person who did this and other SS cartoons? I know it's the same person who did the "Bridgekeeper" cartoons. What's his or her name?

  • His name is Gahan Wilson.

  • A peaceable kingdom behind bars

  • What kind of zoo puts an alligator, a snake, and a kangaroo in the same cage?

  • Good question.

  • One without an ample amount of space?

  • lol! :)

  • It,s a cartoon! Plus animals can,t eat ice cream.

  • @Lectronimo a zoo run by the makers of sesame street
