A Fatal Accident Inquiry into the incident concluded, on 6 September 2011, that McRae was at fault for the avoidable helicopter crash that led to his death and the death of his passengers. Sheriff Nikola Stewart stated, after the 16-day inquiry, that McRae had been engaged in "unnecessary and unsafe" low-level flying at the time of the crash.

Lessons, lessons, lessons. Colin Mcrae chose to operate a helicopter without a valid pilots license this is grossly irresponsible regardless of his skill as a pilot. I think if you want to act in a reckless manner then do it on your own don't take other people with you.

I am not sure what knowing Colin Mcrae has to do with anything. I am an experienced pilot and I would never operate an aircraft without a license. Piloting is not just about the act of operating an aircraft, it is also about sound judgement and decision making (airmanship). Just because a person is well known, does not imply that they are exempt from the laws that govern us all. Mcrae knew when he boarded the aircraft that he was breaking the law yet he chose to go flying.

Firstly I think that before you start calling me an idiot you should perhaps try to understand that people are entitled to express their own opinion without derogatory comments being made. Secondly Colin Mcrae's, license had expired and was therefore invalid. Does a responsible person drive a car with an invalid license? Answer No. They renew the license then drive their car. Does a responsible pilot fly an aircraft with an invalid license? Answer No.  They renew the license then fly.

@green823jade yes i know a few responsible people that have forgotten to renew a drivers license and have still driven-just cause a license expires don't mean you are any less competent to operate the vehicle you were licensed for! i agree you are allowed to state your opinion but when you have no clue what you are talking about it is best to not comment at all! colin was a very busy man and i am sure if your life was as hectic as colin's you might overlook something from time to time...idiot!!
