I've only ever seen this done at drag shows. It's a tip. They're working for it. It's a sign of appreciation because we know they are putting on a show and looking that good isn't cheap. They might get some money from the club or whatever, but it's not much for most queens.

It's not stupid or obscene, and if you don't like it, don't look.

i get what you're saying, and btw i love drag performances and i'm all for drag artists, but there is another way for the drag artists to get their well deserved tips. Why not place a basket or something similar at one corner of the stage for the people to put their tips there instead of trying to shove it in the performer's face??

believe me, i'm aware of financial needs and shrotage in incomes but that's what the performer can do and she/he can move this basket from one corner of the stage to another and this way it can be done in a far more refined manner. i'm by far not against tiping drag performers for the fabulous work they do but people who want to tip the performer can even approach him/her shortly after the show and give him the tip. :-)

you know, we americans are capitalists (not obscene and stupid). in fact, the habit, as you put it, or giving a "tip" is a reward and a symbol of appreciation as a well as a contribution to the performer's maintenance. doing drag requires a lot and it can be very expensive. you can be certain there aren't a lot of foundations or angel donors giving substantial grants to drag artists, so the community encourages them with financial support. lighten up dude, the queens ain't complaining!
