Valcheck reminds me of most of the NCO's and officers I had to take orders from when I was in the Army. They were nothing more than narrow-minded immature pricks that used there rank and power as a tool to resolve their personal (mommy) issues rather than to make the world a better place. This is the problem with middle management in America. This show did a great job in exploring the hidden, ugly motives and politics of people in power. The drugs and murder wasn’t bad either;)
Valchek actually made Rawls and Burrell look GOOD. Hell Rawls almost looked like he gave a shit about police work in this scene (never mind Burrell with his usual "ha ha ha it's all corrupt fun" style). It's so ridiculous that VALCHEK gets promoted. With Rawls and Burrell you get a sense that they once cared, but with Valchek, never.
@TomiKoch Burell and Rawls actually at least attemped to do police work every now and then, of course they both got caught up in the politics of it all. But the truth is, when you get as high as a police commsioner, you have to play politics.
The problem with Valchek as a police commander is that he's not in it for enforcing the law, but feeding his own ego and exerting power. The fact that he went to the feds to get to Sobotka and completely fucked over the case illustrates that well enough.
Ervin Burrell was the most qualified to be appointed Commissioner (he was only interim Commissioner in the vid) after Frazier (the actor playing Frazier, Dick Stilwell, died during Season 1) retired.
However, the 1st district (which was part of counsel that confers with Mayor Royce over the appointment of the next commissioner) didn't like Burrell. Valchek had suction with the 1st district and could influence them to vouch for Burrell. So despite Burrell outranking Valchek, he needed the latter
Valchek had it out on Sobotka because of a donation the St Casmir Church. Hell Daniels always bailing out Valchek's son in law Prez. He should be grateful to Daniels.
Valchek helped Burrell get elected commissioner as a quid pro quo for the detail against Sobotka. Valchek felt betrayed when the detail didnt implicate Sobotka and Burrell didnt manage the operation to Valchek's satisfaction
@finarrykahn13 - Just building on what you're saying--eventually Frank Sobotka was arrested in the case, they figured out how they smuggled shit into the port. There's a great scene where Valchek--who insisted upon doing this--leads Frank out in handcuffs after he's arrested, all smug and shit.

And this guy became the police commissioner by series finale. My God...
Then again, it's not like he was worse than Burrell or Rawls.

Is there any face in the history of television that has looked more like a rat than that of the actor who plays Valchek?

Burrell outranked Valcheck. Dunno why Valcheck had the balls to act all uppity to Burrell in this scene.

@Dogar230 because valcheck had friends on the city planners committee and ties with the mayor
there's an episode earlier on where they are at some banquet and valcheck tells burrell he'll swing some votes for his sobotka detail

It says "comment removed by author" which means someone had to do it from your account. I know I didn't remove it anyway.
