i love that he's got live musicians with him on this. this is the kind of thing that keeps music fresh. using new tools and soundscapes, but keeping musicians in the mix, which helps to keep the subtlety that is easy to lose (though not impossible to keep) in an increasingly mechanized art form.
this is just absolutely incredible. I don't know of many artists that sounds pitch perfect on both their record and in their live performances...insanely talented bloke.
MarQ Manner, you just wasted 4:00 minutes of my freaking life that I can't get get back. This crap was so horrible that I couldn't even listen to the last :42 seconds. Sweet. Let's write and repeat a bunch of useless lyrics and throw in a bunch of noises to it.
@br00talKidHxC Loads of stuff, Rock, House, Blues, Jazz + loads of other stuff. I honestly just think that this guy is doing music the way he does because there's actually not that much there. It's not because it's uncoventional, trust me I enjoy far more "out there" music than this. It's also very boring.
@masterofscotland Shoegaze is the My Bloody Valentine sound or more recently, Explosions in the Sky, Mono, or m83. Trip Hop is the downbeat Hip Hop sound started by Massive Attack/Portishead/Tricky... and by Dub I mean King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Lee Scratch but Dubstep's a continuation of that sound. Chances are if you don't listen to any of this music, James Blake sounds completely unconventional to your ears but being a Jazz guy you would surely appreciate the "falling, falling" 'falling'
@masterofscotland on dotted 8th increments as the leading bass not is falling and also the key change to the relative Major at 1:57 and back to the minor for the outro.
@masterofscotland I don't think 'good' or 'bad' really apply in this context. If somebody asked you why you liked Jimi Hendrix, it would be fairly redundant to say "he is good". Or you wouldn't hear Jools Holland say "This next band are good... Radiohead"
Trip hop isn't psychedelic hip hop. It's called trip hop because of the hip hop influenced beats, but thats about it. It's more stuff like Portishead, or Massive Attack
Sound with lyric, this actually works better than than the recorded version . The distancing effect on the vocals as the song pinnacles beautifully renders what the chap is singing about.
I remember seeing James performing in a pop and jazz concert at school a few years back (he was in the year above). I think he sang Autumn Leaves or something and I remember being totally blown away by his jazz timing and soulfulness. Big congrats on making it in the business mate! Now do away with this dubstep bollocks and let loose a bit haha...
R Kelly had a facial expression like; great song, but it would be so much better if I was the singer. But since it isn't about making love directly it would just be impossible.
@alextheodossiadis94 DMZ 6th birthday. tbh i dont think his live sets are that special. slightly bland and not too original. its his dj sets and the stuff he released on hessle, hemlock and r&s that makes him special and differentiates him from other acts.
My soul breathed a deep breath this morning. True soul music, Anthony Hamilton and D'angelo would be proud of this young man. James Blake, your blessed.
