Thanks Troy for supporting the united states ranchers! And by the way some of you who have posted yes they are buying some of the things we grow but at the same time the HSUS is a worthless organization that trys its best over 65% plus go's into putting us out of what we do!
this guy is a moron.. the humane society isn't trying to "actively put farmers and ranchers out of business", fuck me who do you think grows the fruit for the wine? Magicians?
@Designandrew Yeah they might not be trying to put wineries and grape growers out of business. They passed enough propaganda to put the horse processing industry out of business, which was devastating to horse owners across the country. They about passed legislation in Ohio that would've ground livestock production in that state to a halt. I'd say they're trying pretty hard to put farmers and ranchers out of business.
@Designandrew Furthermore, they got legislation passed in california for cage-free poultry, where chickens can be "free and happy". That's glorified talk for chickens leaving eggs outside in the mud and their own feces, thus increasing the chances of these eggs carrying salmonella and E. Coli.
it is total bullshit that yellow tasil would do that i remember when you came and talked to us at the minnesota state fair it was truly powerfull what you told to us i will never stray from my agricultural roots nore should anyone else
i love the people who are like " You idiot u wasted your money" Your the idiot for not listening to the video and realizing tht he already had the bottle b4 they announced the donation
We are going through hell in Australia atm. Check out Save Live Export on Facebook and drop us a line if you are interested. Summary $300M industry was shut down over night with effectively no warning and tens of 1,000 of animals are now perishing and starving to death in northern Australia. We support you, we have to support each other.
Troy, thanks for your response and I do make frequent donations to our local Humane Society and volunteer for an animal rescue, including a Wild Horse Rescue. I'm sure that the Amercian Humane Society will appreciate your donation too! I'm currently watching the webcast of the BLM meeting taking place in Phoenix and I'm hoping they'll give the horses their land back to them and get you cattle ranchers out of the management.
@serenaz1 I hope you will make a donation to your local humane society that deals directly with unwanted pets in our communities. They would surely appreciate your support.
@jackson23220 I'm glad you are. Since they realized the mistake they made by donating money to the wealthiest animal rights organization in the planet I support them too.
amen!!!!!!!! im an agriculture student at my university! All we learn about is how to keep our animals healthy! Any farmer who mistreats thier animals wont be a farmer very long because you cant make money with unhealthy/unhappy animals!!! I'm a 7th generation farmer and proud of it!
My name is Kiki, and i was raped before i died. I use to enjoy pain and now i inflict it upon people. I was tortured and raped untill i could no longer breathe. Those meanies now suffer and die, and those who do not repost this to 5 videos will die too. i hate this 2 but i believe
At the strike of 12AM, those who did not repost this will die a horrible death after seeing a bloody face covered with long black hair. Those who repost this will get a kiss from their crush
you guys did an amazing job tonight at the kirkwood hotel! you have the support of the majority of iowans and in fact the majority of the country. its sad to think that the animal rights groups represent such a tiny section of our population yet with a little money and airtime can spread a sickning message to so many people. i try to remind myself when reading some of the attacking comments people write u, that they are just apart of the smoke and mirrors from those agendas. keep it up u two!
here is a question for the peta people why would farmers and ranchers treat the animals that give them income badly? people come to my farm and say that they do not have the right places to eat drink and sleep when they do not know anything about animals or how to take care of them when farmers and ranchers have grown up on the farm and ranch and know what they are doing and have enven gone to schools so they are schooled in the right ways.. peta people do some schooling and have a burger
Troy, what you're doing is fantstic! I just wrote a prepared public speech for FFA about Ag literacy and Agvocacy and you were definetally my inspiration! After I listened to your and Stacy's presentation for 4-Hers at the MN State fair this year I was truly inspired! Thank you for everything you do for the agriculture industry!
In our State with out the subsidies the farmers here would NOT be able to say at restraunts and coffie shops talking about every body and what brand new trucks they are going to buy next year.
Subs are only to accomidate the lazy such as Food stamps with BUMS..
Just wanted to chime in with my 2 cents and say that without farm subsidies food prices would be as volatile as any other industry market and w/out them more people would be in poverty because they couldn't afford food when prices were high and People would suffer when prices were low b/c farmers wouldn't be able to make a living and therefore produce less and the cycle would continue. Subsidies are about our food security more than anything else. The late 20's and early 30's are a great exam
The U.S. spends 20 billion dollars a year in farm subsidies. Beef subsidies encourage people to eat cheap factory farmed meat instead of healthy foods, compounding the health issues in American children and fueling increasing obesity rates.
Oh but won't you cry for the poor white American rancher!
@purpdrank83 Can't confirm or deny the $20b figure, but in perspective, less than 1/2 of 1% of the federal budget is devoted to agriculture, and most of that supports school lunch programs and other programs for impoverished women and children. 98% of all farms are family farms, and 96% of all beef is produced on family farms, not factory farms. Subsidies are insignificant in influencing 'factory farm' production or production of healthy foods, and have no impact on food choices or obesity.
@Ageconomist Where are you getting the 98% figure from? From head of the National Farmer's Union in 2000: 4 companies produce 81% of cattle, 57% of pigs, 50% of chickens.
From what I'm reading, family farm is a deceptive marketing term that has no legal or welfare standard. These can still be considered factory farms.
@purpdrank83 My data source: USDA Structure and Finances of Family Farms Report (2010) It may be true that there are only a few processors in the industry, don't confuse those with the tens of 1000s of family farms that actually produce beef. Small #'s do not equate to lack of competition. Actually, the term 'Factory Farm' is deceptive, used by activists that want to appear to be pro family farm but actually advocate policies that undermine the technologies family farms depend on.
@purpdrank83 The only thing agvocagtes feel entitled to is the truth and less gov regulation, and its not even an entitlement mentality given the proactive actions they have taken. Family farmers do a great service to the public by providing efficient, healthy, affordable, sustainable food. (with or without subsidies) It is odd that an activist would accept prolonged abuse for more propoganda video footage.
@purpdrank83 So what is your main propoganda tactic?? Enlighten us...it sure seems like you must have at least one, as much as you argue on here with farmers/ranchers. Or maybe you are just on here commenting because you have nothing better to do but try and put farmers/ranchers down and exault yourself and organizations like USHS & PETA. I'd like to see YOU try and make a living as a farmer/rancher and maybe you would think twice about all this.
And why should Americans care about farmers' interests? With subsidies many of them now collect government money. If we want to get technical we could even call them welfare recipients.
Just because you inherited some land from a parent or grandparent doesn't make you a downtrodden all-American laborer or especially deserving of advocacy. Too bad for the cows you're using as background props too. I'm sure their fearful end in a crowded noisy slaughterhouse wasn't pleasant to say the least.
Why should we care about farmers interest? Do you eat food? whether your a vegetarian, vegan, or other you eat food that was produced by farmers. Oranges are raised by farmers in florida, alot of the veggies you eat are grown in sunny california, the milk and ice cream you eat comes mostly from the north east states. Yes farmers recieve subsidies, but do you know why? To help keep the cost of food low. Without subsidies, most farmers would not even be able to feed their own families.
And why should Americans respect or advocate farmers' interests? With subsidies many farmers receive government money. We could even call them welfare recipients if you want to get technical.
Just because you inherited land from your self-made parents or grandparents doesn't make you a downtrodden all-American worker or especially worthy of advocacy.
Most ranchers are conservatives and as we all know American conservatives are some of the whiniest, most entitled white people in the world. I'd love to hear this guy's opinion on animal agriculture's role in climate change, too.
Good for Yellowtail and pity they pulled their sponsorship because of some agribusiness crying.
@purpdrank83 The term Conservative and Liberal are completely imaginary. Ask any philosopher. And as far as climate change goes, do you drive a car? Do you heat your home? Do you use electricity? Cars run on oil based gasoline. Most houses use natural gas. And nearly all electricity comes from burning coal. Sit down. Shut up.
@HurricaneChronicles if you read my whole story you would've have found out that I didn't go out and buy the bottle of wine to pour out. We had the bottle in our house prior to them announcing the donation.
@TheSqueenie I didn't buy that bottle. It was given to us as a gift prior to the announcement of them donating money to the HSUS. Thankfully, Yellow Tail has realized they wasted their money and has said they will never donate money to them again.
@wharsh24615 Oh wow, no surprise with your reaction... usually people like you are angry and rude all the time. Actually to educate you a little since I imagine your education does not go passed the 6th grade, if there was no farming of animals for meats we would have a LOT more land for crops and a lot more water, and the waste produced by the meat farmers would be non existent as well. So, it is you who is killing agriculture, and robbing the lands for the people and from wild animals.
@TheSqueenie Obviously you are some liberal democrat vegan that doesnt understand cattlemen and ranchers ARE NEEDED in our country otherwise we wouldnt have anything to eat but vegetarian hamburgers. You are stupid and need an education mine me be at a 6th grade level but at least i know what im talking about
@TheSqueenie you are clearly ignorant to this entire situation. FARMERS grow crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS/RANCHERS grow animals. Quit saying meat farmers. 1. It sounds retarded and totally destroys what miniscule relevance you had in the first place, based on your previous commentary 2. The term implies that animals are created by sticking seeds in the ground and waiting for them to grow. Please talk to a real farmer or rancher.
@TheSqueenie Where are you finding these percentages? I would sincerely take your word for it if these numbers came from a credible UNBIASED source. I've got a number for you. One American farmer grows enough food to feed up to 22 people a year. Only 7% of the world's land is arable, and most of it is going under subdivisions like the one I'm sure you live in, and that number is shrinking as the population increases. Get off your soap box.
@TheSqueenie nice reply good to find people like you on you tube. i to support all animals rights! from my cross hairs to the dinner table! theirs a place for all gods critters! right beside the mashed potatos and gravy!
@TheSqueenie their even better when you eat them alive! i got the idea when watching wolves eat a critter while its stil alive. we can learn a lot from wolves the best way to eat something is while its alive yet. uuumm the pain the poor critter feels adds flavor to the meat. oh yes the wolf is a awesome animal, never should we kill a wolf because they show us how we realy should threat animals???????????? is that how we should do it????? huhhh huhhh huuhhh is it?????????????
@sunlei5 Its because of these large organizations the American Farmers and Ranchers are losing money. Stupid people like you are the ones that vote for them. Stupid people like you are why the USA has lost power and money...
Thats a shame so you ranchers are all for the suffering of 10 laying hens crammed in a 2 X 2 cage and calves crammed in a dark box for 5 months for veal? Is that what you ranchers think is right?
Not really sure how dumping the wine is helping anything, you already paid for the product, you might as well use it. Now you're just being wasteful.
However I agree with your stand on the subject of supporting the local guys and if you're an ethical farmer & rancher then you're not the type of person that the Humane Society is after anyway.
How come you pick on Yellowtail, but your buddy David Martosko is buying thousands of Humanewatch bumberstickers from Zazzle - who's been a major donor to HSUS for years. Makes no sense. You people have no principles.
Define principles, because obviously the agricultural producers of this nation, who have been FEEDING THE WORLD (for what, 234 years?) have obviously been doing something wrong. I guess I've missed the part where doing something so well for so long was a bad thing.
@NYLISE1 what does feeding the world (what a God complex) have to do with boycotting some sponsors and continuing to patronize others that are just to convenient to give up? Oh that's right. Zazzle's good bulk rates.
Sorry, can't support the US meat industry in good conscience. Should have sent the wine to me (I'd pay shipping) and I could have enjoyed a decent wine from an ethical company, and you could have stood up for your beliefs by refusing to provide them with a profit.
Excuse my French, but fuck the HSUS. Those commie, devil worshiping pigs want to ban huntin& put every American farmer and rancher out of business, and put to-fu on every U.S. table. Livestock are on earth, bread and thrive for one reason: For the human race's consumption, and boy I sure fucking love good pork, beef, and chicken. It'll be a cold day in hell before they try and take my meat away, they better hope the democrats took away my guns before then, otherwise some people are gonna get shot.
K. First, livestock are here for the same reason you are: to reproduce, because natural selection chose them. Second, tofu is one word, non-hyphenated. So you eat your meat and get your colon cancer. Meanwhile I'll stick to my morals and you can kiss my ass.
So I see that animal righters have become experts on animal agriculture and proccessing plants just because they have seen propaganda videos put on by orgs. like HSUS and Peta. With a multimillion dollar agenda these "non profits" will claim anything. So as a 2nd generation cow/calf producer I too will boycott Yellow Tail and the likes of Carrie Underwood who also donates to HSUS.
The Humane Farming association Coloring and Activity Book has been designed to show children that farm animals - like all animals - have basic needs - such as crude protein and adequate micro nutrients.
These entire animals lives have been decided before theyre even born, the reason they exist is to be a food supply, thats just wrong, millions of tons of food is just wasted every day around the world, how many animals have died for no reason at all, millions of animals die every day as well, just on the off chance that someone is hungry im all for animal rights, and not for farmers rights in this particular case.
@champboxer21 ,"I can never understand how animals become more important than people", what make's you more important than any other animal?.
"And how many people die of hunger?", not sure, you dont have to just eat meat , save the whale's but cause mass genocide to other specie's right?!..........
@guitdude09 lol your stupidity amazes me. you obviously dont even know what mass genocide means. cause if thats the case then the damn cows would already be extinct. what makes us more important than other animals? o maybe the fact we sit on top of the food chain.you know animals eat each other? thats how it works. who eats just meat? if you think we just eat meat then i truly have pitty for you.
@bluedavenger you say, "you obviously dont even know what mass genocide means",it dosen't mean extinct dumbass, otherwise there'd be no jewish people."lol your stupidity amazes me"yes but so does bright colour's and fluffy tail's."we sit on top of the food chain"you dont!."you know animals eat each other?thats how it works",thank's Darwin!."i truly have pitty for you",i know you are but what am i?!.Ok you obviously have issue's with situational awareness so im going to sit over there now.
@guitdude09 wow... they dont die "on some chance that somone is hungry"... every single person in the world is hungry...all the meat is eatin, not waisted.
@guitdude09 lol, oops. i hate drinking. beer taste like shit, getting drunk always sucks the next day. Havent had a drink in years, that stage got old real quit. Cultivating mushrooms and being with my wife takes up all my time. And im not talking about "magic mushrooms" either.
you appear to not want to answer my question, so i will say this: if you send your animals away to be fattened and then slaughtered somewhere else, you have no control over their care. the "stunning process" is ONLY effective if administered correctly. According to a friend of mine, who grew up working in his family's slaughter house, a lot of times, it isn't. Guess what happens when that little stunner stops working? So don't insult us by saying saying they're "respectfully harvested".
@daisytx77 I beleive that the stunning process is the most effective of all the way to render animals unconscious. There are less animals that are incorrectly stunned using this process, let alone it is the most cost effective, and with it being the most cost effective that means that your beef that you buy at the store costs much less.
@daisytx77 The Humane Slaughter Act was revised in 2002 to enhance slaughter methods to be more humane and also to be more strict on enforcement. This came from demand from grocery stores and restaurants. This is certainly not what your friend grew up with, so yes, it is accurate to say they are "respectfully harvested."
@mandarae41190 really? perhaps you are unfamiliar with the LARGEST BEEF RECALL in history, which was 143 million pounds. in 2008. guess they're enforcing that pretty well, aren't they? downed cattle are still yummy, right? oh, and do people who send their cattle off have a little "kill-cam" in the slaughterhouse so they can watch? because otherwise, there is no way to know what is going on in those places.
@daisytx77 Just so you know, when we have a downed cow on our farm we never let it go to waste. If it has had no medication that would make it harmful for human consumption, we take the animal to the local meat locker and have it butchered. we have never had any problems doing this. I have seen the stunning process done and the animal is never in any pain.
I run a dairy goat farm in WI and we got crap like this everywhere here. WI dairy means $31 billion a year. That's more than Florida's citrus and Idaho's potato combined.
The Humane society is opposed to cruel confinement of animals, force feeding animals, and environmental hazards of factory farming. Like your steak whichever way you want, whatever. If you don't give a shit that an animal is is agony when it dies, then that says a shit ton about your spirit and energy that you put out. Why NOT give a crap that giving the animals that feed and clothe you and give you sustenance are given dignity in life and death? It only serves to make you a better human being.
@serafina1107 IN this country we use a stunning process to render the animal unconcious. They don't die in agony, they are respectfully harvested. If they aren't treated correctly in life, the products they provide us with won't be acceptable.
ahahah..wow. WOW. Have you ever worked at Cargill or any other of the major (4) slaughterhouse companies? Give me a break. The UK has a higher voltage than us and they still mess up...about 20% do not stay unconscious when throats are slit, so you go work in a shit ass job and then tell me they are treated humanely. You know how many dead cows, dead chickens etc there are just from transport? Guess why.
....wow. wow. Have you ever worked at Cargill or any other of the major (4) slaughterhouse companies? Give me a break. The UK has a higher voltage than us and they still mess up...about 20% do not stay unconscious when throats are slit and they are dismembered, so you go work in a shit ass job and then tell me they are treated humanely. You know how many dead cows, dead chickens etc there are JUST from transport? Guess why. No food, no water, no heat or ac.
Would your definition of "unconscious" happen to involve thrashing, screaming, and desperately trying to keep breathing?
If that's the case, I hope the next surgery you need (hopefully you won't need one at all, but in any case) isn't performed with an anesthetist using your definition.
@AdvocatesForAg "If they aren't treated correctly in life, the products they provide us with won't be acceptable. " yeah, pitty there is'nt another reason to treat them with dignity appart from profit & loss."stunning process" so i assume you speak for every single farmer in america, the humane society is for those that DONT treat animals with respect, which is everyone lets face it, how about i kill your family "humanely" that'd be cool with you right!?, as long as they did'nt suffer.
@serafina1107 a) "Factory farms" make up just 2% of the total # of farms. The rest are family-owned and operated, like my family and AdvocatesForAg. b) Farmers care about their animals. We care about the environment. That's how its been since agriculture was invented, which was QUITE a while ago. c) I have never had to force feed a cow, they are pretty eager to trample me for a little bit of grain most days. d) I like mine medium rare. Have a nice day. I hope you won't ignore my points.
@mandarae41190 I believe you are grossly mistaken. I do agree that there are ethical farmers out there. (Bless them for their existence) However....look up Factory Farm Map. It gives a pretty detailed view of the prevalence and existence of factory farms in the US. World wide....factory farms make up about 74% of the sources where "meat" comes from.
@flexijerdkov your intelligence has completely swayed my opinion. I'm going to start consuming dead flesh again, as well as try to stop my "whoring" ways. You're so smart.
In order to answer your question, I would need to know if you send them to another facility (i.e. a CAFO) or finish them with something other than grass yourself on your own land. Also, I looked back through approx. the last years' worth of emails and nothing they've sent me indicates that they claim to operate local shelters. I also looked at the "donate now" section of their website and if there was enough space, I would paste what it claims the money goes to--it isn't their own shelters.
@AdvocatesForAg and "treated correctly in life"? Wow, WOW. I'm NOT saying that humane(ish) farming isnt in existence, im just saying that raising an animal for food or another commodity whilst keeping it controlled and in captivity is not respectful at all.....so yeah ill eat my meat but im not going to BS and say that its respectful to control the lives of animals from the moment they are born, because its not, at all.
@AdvocatesForAg Doing so degrades them to commodities, the end. We lose respect for the individual animal, its livelihood, and it's given right to at least live a life of freedom before it is consumed. Money and meat.
If you do treat your animals humanely then bravo to you. Although since I just read an article that asserts that you send your cows to be corn-fattened for slaughter, I have my doubts. Anyone who gets the HSUS emails regularly knows that they ask for money to prevent baby seal slaughters, dog fighting, political activism etc, and not just for local shelters. IF you are treating your animals humanely, you have nothing to fear from them.
@daisytx77 Thanks for the comment. I was wondering though why your determination for humane treatment is based off the diet they receive? And by the way, the HSUS doesn't operate any local pet shelters, so if you are getting emails from them asking you to support local pet shelters they operate, they are lying to you.
@AdvocatesForAg i must say daisytx77 couldnt have put it better. i completely agree with what he said. if you are using good farming techs then i dont have anything against you.
@bluedavenger As a 5th generation rancher, I have to use good management practices. However, animal rights groups such as the HSUS are trying to restrict the ability of family farmers and ranchers from using good management techniques.
@AdvocatesForAg I agree. with ya, a fella I know got sick of someone turning him in for every little thing. Like how the rain drains off the roof and into the cow yard for example. He got turned in and they said he had to put gutters on the roof so it would drain at the ends of the barn. The retarded thing is that the water still would end up in the cow yard,I mean where is the common sense in that?
. I don't see the presentation of any evidence in how the Humane Society is actively trying to put farmer's and rancher's out of business. it would be closer to true to say big Ag is pushing high calorie/low quality food on Americans at a great cost of increased morbidity and mortality rates (Congestive Heart Failure, Strokes, Diabetes... ect.).; All the while, with hand extended for goverment handouts. Maybe, you should have kept that bottle of wine...
Thank you for re-stating the obvious --- that the well-being of humans comes before the alleged well-being of animals. Humans are not on the same plane as animals,
as every self-respecting human knows. Animals exist for the benefit of US, not the other way around.
Way to go Troy! I am a former rancher and am now a biologist in a major metro area. It is my job to inform our urban neighbors about the need for farmers and ranchers. You would be amazed at how little these folks know about the farming and ranching business. Sadly, many many urbanites buy into every blatenly false, emotion driven claim put out there by the Humane Society and PETA.
@TVan92 riiiighht. i pretty sure i know more than you douche. cows arent suppose to eat corn. it causes e-coli. along with other heath issues to the cows, like death.
@bluedavenger no im pretty positve that i know A LOT more than your uneducated self, see i live on a farm in south dakota, and i raise nothing but corn soybeans and angus cattle. we background all of our calves using a ration of CORN silage, ground CORN and ground hay. we never have and never will have a problem with e-coli caused by cattle eating corn, and NEVER have we had a problem with cattle dying from eating corn.
@TVan92 you think i just made that up? go check it out on wikipedia. feeding nothing but corn can cause serious health issues for the cows AND ultimatly us.
@TVan92 Cows did not evolve to eat corn. Cows are grazing animals and designed to eat grasses. Unfortunately, modern agricorps have found feeding cows corn to be far less expensive than allowing them to graze naturally or feeding them grass in a feedlot.
@bluedavenger I would like you to give me the source you got this information so I could read it myself. Now if you were understand the psyology of a cows digestive system you would know that they are ruminants, meaning that they have 4 compartments to their stomachs, first and most important of these is the rumen which contains living microbes.
@TVan92 The problem with feeding cows corn is that they also require far more medication and hormonal treatments, as they have serious health issues when fed a corn-based diet. Feeding a cow corn also causes the cows digestive tract, which normally has a fairly neutral pH, to become fairly acidic.
@bluedavenger feeding corn is much cheaper huh? just from your comments i can tell that you have never stepped foot on a farm/ranch. it is animal rights people like you that have probably never seen a cow before that are trying to control the ranching industry.
@TVan92 lol you dumb ass. my families farm is letterally 15 minutes from Bushes ranch here by waco tx. you think im just making all that up? god you really are quit are moron. those are all facts you dumb shit. corn is the worst thing for the cows. hell before they worked with cows we had a crap load of emus. made good money off them for a while. please douche pull some facts proving me wrong, o wait you cant.
@TVan92 all my comments were just stating facts. we both know your full of bs. "just from reading your comments" lol you mean my facts... lol, you should have seen my friend that has never been on a farm though . when we were driving thru one of the gates on our 4wheeler all the cows come over to us(expecting food) well my friend didnt know that. he just thought they wanted to attack us or something. shit was HILARIOUS!!
@TVan92 wtf your only 17 years old and your trying to tell me i dont know what im talking about... that clears up a shit load. now i know why you acting like a moron. just go type in feeding cows corn on yahoo. you will see page after page explaining why its bad.
@bluedavenger just because im 17 doesnt mean im an illiterate retard. it means that i actually care about becoming intelligent on the topic that i am trying to tell you about. just because a study shows that grass is better for a cow than corn doesnt mean that that is what actually happens.
@bluedavenger i bet you are one of those farmers that learned all about this in college and cant use common sense to adapt to the situation you are in. i dont really care about what you learned or what you professor said in college. i know what works and you dont see me trying to tell you what you need to feed your cows. feed your cows grass and ill feed mine a ration with corn and we will see whose weight more in the sale barn.
@bluedavenger theres no need for swearing here, it is possible to have a civil discussion even when you have completely different views. That being said, I was made aware of this discussion by one of my students you have been going back and forth with. I would like to point out if you are going to find evidence or support for your claim, quoting yahoo, wikepedia, google etc. does not go very far to support your credibility.
@jmenfield Sorry about the swearing, im just an ahole... but i know feeding cow corn is bad. done correctly and it wont harm anything or anyone. but there is real evidence supporting how corn feeding can lead to serious issues. Im sure as you know, if your a responsible farmer there shouldnt be any issues. But that still doesnt change the fact that feeding cows corn isnt good.
@bluedavenger As you say "if your a responsible farmer there shouldn't be any issues," so are you insinuating that most of us farmers and ranchers aren't responsible? I can assure you that 99% of us are responsible. Yes if there is an imbalance in nutrients in an animals diet there can be problems especially with deficiancy diseases, but that is why we balance the diet of our cattle.
@bluedavenger And in balancing the diets of our beef animals we need to use grain the most popular and most easily grown of these being corn. Even when we have our cows and their calves out on pasture, we must supplement them with minerals and vitamins to prevent any deficiencies that would other wise occur. Also by using corn and other efficient (low cost high nutritional value), feeds we therefore create a cheaper food for consumers.
@bluedavenger We use feeds such as corn to be the most efficient that we can be, thus making food cheaper. Because we do this, CONSUMERS IN THE US SPEND THE LEAST AMOUNT OF THEIR INCOME ON FOOD OF ANYONE IN THE WORLD. Just 7.5% of their income compared to 11.5% in Europe, 24.5% in Mexico and 55% in the 3rd World.
@bluedavenger Farmers/Ranchers ability to be productive and efficient has made this country the great place to live it is today. Take us out of the equation once and see how fast things fall apart. We do know what is best for our land and our animals, after all it is our livelyhood. We take the best care of them we can, and inturn they will take care of us.
@bluedavenger Im not going to tell you not to question things because you should, just make sure your doing the right research and not listening to people who make up what they call facts just bc it sounds good. We need everyone to to their research before it turns into a witch hunt, which is exactly what the HSUS is doing with the American Farmer and Rancher.
@jmenfield I hate to tell you but eating fast food on any level is not good for you. from the process meats, refined sugars, high trans fat, fat/ calories count.... fast food is bad on any level. like i said some people it effects. others get fat and health issues from it. And im also sure there are allot less than 99% of the farmers doing their job correctly.
@bluedavenger Thanks for the source you gave me, im not trying to be disrespectful to you but that blog doesnt contain any credible studies whatsoever. He quotes one study that says grass feed decreases e coli, which i'm in no position to dispute but reducing e coli in the cow doesnt really mean anything since it is actually a naturally occuring organism in both cattle and us.
@bluedavenger That waste that Mr. Shapley often refers to in his blog is known as distillers grain. Because of the process it goes through the DGs has more concentrated nutrients, thus we don't have to feed as much of it, and it is more palitabe to the cows so they eat it better and waste less. We've been feeding DGs to our cows for many years.
@bluedavenger The beef that our family eats comes from our own herd, as do many other farmers around here, to date not one of us or our children has been sick from e coli or any other food born illness from beef.
@bluedavenger I would like you to give me the source you got this information so I could read it myself. Now if you were understand the psyology of a cows digestive system you would know that they are ruminants, meaning that they have 4 compartments to their stomachs, first and most important of these is the rumen which contains living microbes, these living microbes are what break down the feed that the animal consumes, this is how cows and other ruminants are able to eat plants.
@jmenfield Theres thousands and thousands of people who eat fast food on a daily basis and they dont die from it. doesnt change the fact fast food is still bad for you....
@bluedavenger But what is the underlying cause of why fast food is bad for people? Does it not have most to do with the fact that they over do it on portions? They over do it by eating at fast food restuarants everyday. However, to compare fastfood for people and the feeding of grains to cattle isn't even a possibility.
@bluedavenger They have different types of microbes that break down different feeds, so they have microbes that break down grasses and microbes that break down CORN, meaning that they are naturally able to break down corn. In fact they improve the health of the animal if they are weak or require higher nutrition for whatever reason because corn and other grains have a higher nutritional value than hay.
@jmenfield Yea jmenfield! I was going to respond to these rude comments in a similar way, but it appears as so you already did. I would like to add that all cattle are fed based on their purpose. Cow-calf operations put the pairs to pasture because that is best for the cow at maintenance. Weaned beef calves will go to a feed lot and be fed a balance ration of grain and forage because this is best for muscle development. There is a science to it. Please make an effort, blue, to learn, then speak
@mandarae41190 i understand that. but im just saying feeding them corn is bad. i know done properly it really is not as big a deal as people make it. but when there is farmers who are cutting corners and allow their livestock to get sick. hell thousands of people eat fast food everyday and dont die, still doesnt mean it isnt good for you...
@bluedavenger Are you a veterinarian or an animal scientist with any sort of credibility to support this claim? And also, any farmer who cuts corners and lets their livestock get sick is an idiot. It's to their advantage to manage their livestock and money correctly to get the maximum production. Moral: Farmers care. Farmers feed the world.
@mandarae41190 lol you think only vets know about animals... It doesnt take a genius to do research over corn fed cows... first example, wikipedia isnt full of fake info. they seem to agree with what i say. So do plenty of articles published by scientist and vets. maybe you should actually look into it and see if im wrong first before acusing me of being wrong.
@bluedavenger I'm sorry, but I haven't accused you of anything. I am looking for answers to see what it is you see from a consumers view. I AM actively involved in this area. Large animal production is my animal sciences interest and background, with respect to both dairy and beef. I don't know your background. Also, wikipedia isn't the most up to date source of information either. Research is constantly conducted and abstracts written, especially here at Purdue.
@mandarae41190 lol no problem, hes deserved one. i was being a complete ass hole... I spent all my time cultivating mushrooms, so i dont really get invloved with farming. I know enough to know we could treat our animals better. but americans are cheap, and wont pay extra for the better care we could provide. If farmers got payed anywhere near what they deserve im sure the quality of life for the animals and the quality of the food would improve.
@mandarae41190 a few days ago i had allot more respect for PETA and the HSUS. after doing more research i find they are complete crap. and now im glad ive only helped out local shelters...
@bluedavenger Well I am glad you learned a thing or two. If you have any more questions, feel free to email me. Educating others about animal sciences topics is kind of my passion, especially the PETA/HSUS deal. My email is listed on my profile

Designandrew 3 months ago
@Designandrew Yeah they might not be trying to put wineries and grape growers out of business. They passed enough propaganda to put the horse processing industry out of business, which was devastating to horse owners across the country. They about passed legislation in Ohio that would've ground livestock production in that state to a halt. I'd say they're trying pretty hard to put farmers and ranchers out of business.
NYLISE1 2 months ago
@Designandrew Furthermore, they got legislation passed in california for cage-free poultry, where chickens can be "free and happy". That's glorified talk for chickens leaving eggs outside in the mud and their own feces, thus increasing the chances of these eggs carrying salmonella and E. Coli.

In our State with out the subsidies the farmers here would NOT be able to say at restraunts and coffie shops talking about every body and what brand new trucks they are going to buy next year.
Subs are only to accomidate the lazy such as Food stamps with BUMS..
FaceforAG should be called BUMS FOR SUBS.
Airspace1 1 year ago
Just wanted to chime in with my 2 cents and say that without farm subsidies food prices would be as volatile as any other industry market and w/out them more people would be in poverty because they couldn't afford food when prices were high and People would suffer when prices were low b/c farmers wouldn't be able to make a living and therefore produce less and the cycle would continue. Subsidies are about our food security more than anything else. The late 20's and early 30's are a great exam
sallyruth23 1 year ago
The U.S. spends 20 billion dollars a year in farm subsidies.

Ageconomist 1 year ago
@Ageconomist Where are you getting the 98% figure from? From head of the National Farmer's Union in 2000: 4 companies produce 81% of cattle, 57% of pigs, 50% of chickens.
From what I'm reading, family farm is a deceptive marketing term that has no legal or welfare standard. These can still be considered factory farms.
purpdrank83 1 year ago

@purpdrank83 The term Conservative and Liberal are completely imaginary. Ask any philosopher. And as far as climate change goes, do you drive a car? Do you heat your home? Do you use electricity? @TheSqueenie you are clearly ignorant to this entire situation. FARMERS grow crops such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. LIVESTOCK PRODUCERS/RANCHERS grow animals. Quit saying meat farmers. 1. It sounds retarded and totally destroys what miniscule relevance you had in the first place, based on your previous commentary 2. The term implies that animals are created by sticking seeds in the ground and waiting for them to grow. Please talk to a real farmer or rancher.

@NYLISE1, to make it simple: Number of people worldwide who will die as a result of malnutrition this year: 20 million
-Number of people who could be adequately fed using land freed if Americans reduced their intake of meat by 10%: 100 million
-Percentage of corn grown in the U.S. eaten by people: 20
-Percentage of corn grown in the U.S. eaten by livestock: 80
-Percentage of oats grown in the U.S. eaten by livestock: 95
-Percentage of protein wasted by cycling grain through livestock: 90
TheSqueenie 2 months ago
@NYLISE1,-How frequently a child dies as a result of malnutrition: every 2.3 seconds
-Pounds of potatoes that can be grown on an acre: 40,000
-Pounds of beef produced on an acre: 250
-Percentage of U.S. farmland devoted to beef production: 56
-Pounds of grain and soybeans needed to produce a pound of edible flesh from feedlot beef: 16
Sorry to say this because I know you must in the business of taking lives, but it is very unnecessary nd cruel.
TheSqueenie 2 months ago
@TheSqueenie Where are you finding these percentages? I would sincerely take your word for it if these numbers came from a credible UNBIASED source. I've got a number for you. One American farmer grows enough food to feed up to 22 people a year. Only 7% of the world's land is arable, and most of it is going under subdivisions like the one I'm sure you live in, and that number is shrinking as the population increases. Get off your soap box.

you appear to not want to answer my question, so i will say this: if you send your animals away to be fattened and then slaughtered somewhere else, you have no control over their care. the "stunning process" is ONLY effective if administered correctly. According to a friend of mine, who grew up working in his family's slaughter house, a lot of times, it isn't. Guess what happens when that little stunner stops working? So don't insult us by saying saying they're "respectfully harvested".
daisytx77 1 year ago
@daisytx77 I beleive that the stunning process is the most effective of all the way to render animals unconscious. There are less animals that are incorrectly stunned using this process, let alone it is the most cost effective, and with it being the most cost effective that means that your beef that you buy at the store costs much less.
TVan92 1 year ago
@daisytx77 The Humane Slaughter Act was revised in 2002 to enhance slaughter methods to be more humane and also to be more strict on enforcement. This came from demand from grocery stores and restaurants. This is certainly not what your friend grew up with, so yes, it is accurate to say they are "respectfully harvested."
mandarae41190 1 year ago
@mandarae41190 really? perhaps you are unfamiliar with the LARGEST BEEF RECALL in history, which was 143 million pounds. in 2008. guess they're enforcing that pretty well, aren't they? downed cattle are still yummy, right? oh, and do people who send their cattle off have a little "kill-cam" in the slaughterhouse so they can watch? because otherwise, there is no way to know what is going on in those places.
daisytx77 1 year ago
@daisytx77 Just so you know, when we have a downed cow on our farm we never let it go to waste. If it has had no medication that would make it harmful for human consumption, we take the animal to the local meat locker and have it butchered. we have never had any problems doing this. I have seen the stunning process done and the animal is never in any pain.

ahahah..wow. Guess why.

@AdvocatesForAg

I hope you won't ignore my points.
mandarae41190 1 year ago
@mandarae41190 I believe you are grossly mistaken. I do agree that there are ethical farmers out there. (Bless them for their existence) However....look up Factory Farm Map. It gives a pretty detailed view of the prevalence and existence of factory farms in the US. World wide....factory farms make up about 74% of the sources where "meat" comes from.

In order to answer your question, I would need to know if you send them to another facility (i.e. a CAFO) or finish them with something other than grass yourself on your own land. Also, I looked back through approx. the last years' worth of emails and nothing they've sent me indicates that they claim to operate local shelters. I also looked at the "donate now" section of their website and if there was enough space, I would paste what it claims the money goes to--it isn't their own shelters.
daisytx77 1 year ago
@daisytx77 You keep suggesting that their diet has something to do with whether they are being humanely treated. Why is that?
AdvocatesForAg 1 year ago
@AdvocatesForAg and "treated correctly in life"? Wow, WOW. I'm NOT saying that humane(ish) farming isnt in existence, im just saying that raising an animal for food or another commodity whilst keeping it controlled and in captivity is not respectful at all.....so yeah ill eat my meat but im not going to BS and say that its respectful to control the lives of animals from the moment they are born, because its not, at all.
coda67 1 year ago
@AdvocatesForAg Doing so degrades them to commodities, the end. We lose respect for the individual animal, its livelihood, and it's given right to at least live a life of freedom before it is consumed. Money and meat.
coda67 1 year ago
If you do treat your animals humanely then bravo to you. Although since I just read an article that asserts that you send your cows to be corn-fattened for slaughter, I have my doubts. Anyone who gets the HSUS emails regularly knows that they ask for money to prevent baby seal slaughters, dog fighting, political activism etc, and not just for local shelters. IF you are treating your animals humanely, you have nothing to fear from them.
daisytx77 1 year ago
@daisytx77 Thanks for the comment. I was wondering though why your determination for humane treatment is based off the diet they receive? And by the way, the HSUS doesn't operate any local pet shelters, so if you are getting emails from them asking you to support local pet shelters they operate, they are lying to you.
AdvocatesForAg 1 year ago
@AdvocatesForAg i must say daisytx77 couldnt have put it better. i completely agree with what he said. if you are using good farming techs then i dont have anything against you.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger As a 5th generation rancher, I have to use good management practices. However, animal rights groups such as the HSUS are trying to restrict the ability of family farmers and ranchers from using good management techniques.
AdvocatesForAg 1 year ago
@AdvocatesForAg I agree. with ya, a fella I know got sick of someone turning him in for every little thing. Like how the rain drains off the roof and into the cow yard for example. He got turned in and they said he had to put gutters on the roof so it would drain at the ends of the barn. The retarded thing is that the water still would end up in the cow yard,I mean where is the common sense in that?

Maybe you should have drank the bottle of wine to help you forget about the evils perpetrated on animals by the factory farm industry.
BIizShouter 1 year ago

Keep up the good work!

@TVan92 riiiighht. i pretty sure i know more than you douche. cows arent suppose to eat corn. it causes e-coli. along with other heath issues to the cows, like death.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger no im pretty positve that i know A LOT more than your uneducated self, see i live on a farm in south dakota, and i raise nothing but corn soybeans and angus cattle. we background all of our calves using a ration of CORN silage, ground CORN and ground hay. we never have and never will have a problem with e-coli caused by cattle eating corn, and NEVER have we had a problem with cattle dying from eating corn.
TVan92 1 year ago
@TVan92 you think i just made that up? go check it out on wikipedia. feeding nothing but corn can cause serious health issues for the cows AND ultimatly us.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@TVan92 Cows did not evolve to eat corn. Cows are grazing animals and designed to eat grasses. Unfortunately, modern agricorps have found feeding cows corn to be far less expensive than allowing them to graze naturally or feeding them grass in a feedlot.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger I would like you to give me the source you got this information so I could read it myself. Now if you were understand the psyology of a cows digestive system you would know that they are ruminants, meaning that they have 4 compartments to their stomachs, first and most important of these is the rumen which contains living microbes.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@TVan92 The problem with feeding cows corn is that they also require far more medication and hormonal treatments, as they have serious health issues when fed a corn-based diet. Feeding a cow corn also causes the cows digestive tract, which normally has a fairly neutral pH, to become fairly acidic.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger feeding corn is much cheaper huh? just from your comments i can tell that you have never stepped foot on a farm/ranch. it is animal rights people like you that have probably never seen a cow before that are trying to control the ranching industry.
TVan92 1 year ago
@TVan92 lol you dumb ass. my families farm is letterally 15 minutes from Bushes ranch here by waco tx. you think im just making all that up? god you really are quit are moron. those are all facts you dumb shit. corn is the worst thing for the cows. hell before they worked with cows we had a crap load of emus. made good money off them for a while. please douche pull some facts proving me wrong, o wait you cant.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@TVan92 all my comments were just stating facts. we both know your full of bs. "just from reading your comments" lol you mean my facts... lol, you should have seen my friend that has never been on a farm though . when we were driving thru one of the gates on our 4wheeler all the cows come over to us(expecting food) well my friend didnt know that. he just thought they wanted to attack us or something. shit was HILARIOUS!!
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@TVan92 wtf your only 17 years old and your trying to tell me i dont know what im talking about... that clears up a shit load. now i know why you acting like a moron. just go type in feeding cows corn on yahoo. you will see page after page explaining why its bad.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger just because im 17 doesnt mean im an illiterate retard. it means that i actually care about becoming intelligent on the topic that i am trying to tell you about. just because a study shows that grass is better for a cow than corn doesnt mean that that is what actually happens.
TVan92 1 year ago
@bluedavenger i bet you are one of those farmers that learned all about this in college and cant use common sense to adapt to the situation you are in. i dont really care about what you learned or what you professor said in college. i know what works and you dont see me trying to tell you what you need to feed your cows. feed your cows grass and ill feed mine a ration with corn and we will see whose weight more in the sale barn.
TVan92 1 year ago

@bluedavenger wow all we feed our cattle is corn and hay and we have never had one die
worm1426 1 year ago
@bluedavenger theres no need for swearing here, it is possible to have a civil discussion even when you have completely different views. That being said, I was made aware of this discussion by one of my students you have been going back and forth with. I would like to point out if you are going to find evidence or support for your claim, quoting yahoo, wikepedia, google etc. does not go very far to support your credibility.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@jmenfield Sorry about the swearing, im just an ahole... but i know feeding cow corn is bad. done correctly and it wont harm anything or anyone. but there is real evidence supporting how corn feeding can lead to serious issues. Im sure as you know, if your a responsible farmer there shouldnt be any issues. But that still doesnt change the fact that feeding cows corn isnt good.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger As you say "if your a responsible farmer there shouldn't be any issues," so are you insinuating that most of us farmers and ranchers aren't responsible? I can assure you that 99% of us are responsible. Yes if there is an imbalance in nutrients in an animals diet there can be problems especially with deficiancy diseases, but that is why we balance the diet of our cattle.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@bluedavenger And in balancing the diets of our beef animals we need to use grain the most popular and most easily grown of these being corn. Even when we have our cows and their calves out on pasture, we must supplement them with minerals and vitamins to prevent any deficiencies that would other wise occur. Also by using corn and other efficient (low cost high nutritional value), feeds we therefore create a cheaper food for consumers.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@bluedavenger We use feeds such as corn to be the most efficient that we can be, thus making food cheaper. Because we do this, CONSUMERS IN THE US SPEND THE LEAST AMOUNT OF THEIR INCOME ON FOOD OF ANYONE IN THE WORLD. Just 7.5% of their income compared to 11.5% in Europe, 24.5% in Mexico and 55% in the 3rd World.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@bluedavenger Farmers/Ranchers ability to be productive and efficient has made this country the great place to live it is today. Take us out of the equation once and see how fast things fall apart. We do know what is best for our land and our animals, after all it is our livelyhood. We take the best care of them we can, and inturn they will take care of us.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@bluedavenger Im not going to tell you not to question things because you should, just make sure your doing the right research and not listening to people who make up what they call facts just bc it sounds good. We need everyone to to their research before it turns into a witch hunt, which is exactly what the HSUS is doing with the American Farmer and Rancher.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@jmenfield I hate to tell you but eating fast food on any level is not good for you. from the process meats, refined sugars, high trans fat, fat/ calories count.... fast food is bad on any level. like i said some people it effects. others get fat and health issues from it. And im also sure there are allot less than 99% of the farmers doing their job correctly.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger Thanks for the source you gave me, im not trying to be disrespectful to you but that blog doesnt contain any credible studies whatsoever. He quotes one study that says grass feed decreases e coli, which i'm in no position to dispute but reducing e coli in the cow doesnt really mean anything since it is actually a naturally occuring organism in both cattle and us.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@bluedavenger That waste that Mr. Shapley often refers to in his blog is known as distillers grain. Because of the process it goes through the DGs has more concentrated nutrients, thus we don't have to feed as much of it, and it is more palitabe to the cows so they eat it better and waste less. We've been feeding DGs to our cows for many years.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@bluedavenger The beef that our family eats comes from our own herd, as do many other farmers around here, to date not one of us or our children has been sick from e coli or any other food born illness from beef.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@jmenfield BTW. I like mine medium rare. BEEF. Its whats for dinner.
TVan92 1 year ago
@bluedavenger I would like you to give me the source you got this information so I could read it myself. Now if you were understand the psyology of a cows digestive system you would know that they are ruminants, meaning that they have 4 compartments to their stomachs, first and most important of these is the rumen which contains living microbes, these living microbes are what break down the feed that the animal consumes, this is how cows and other ruminants are able to eat plants.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@jmenfield Theres thousands and thousands of people who eat fast food on a daily basis and they dont die from it. doesnt change the fact fast food is still bad for you....
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger But what is the underlying cause of why fast food is bad for people? Does it not have most to do with the fact that they over do it on portions? They over do it by eating at fast food restuarants everyday. However, to compare fastfood for people and the feeding of grains to cattle isn't even a possibility.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@bluedavenger They have different types of microbes that break down different feeds, so they have microbes that break down grasses and microbes that break down CORN, meaning that they are naturally able to break down corn. In fact they improve the health of the animal if they are weak or require higher nutrition for whatever reason because corn and other grains have a higher nutritional value than hay.
jmenfield 1 year ago
@jmenfield Yea jmenfield! I was going to respond to these rude comments in a similar way, but it appears as so you already did. I would like to add that all cattle are fed based on their purpose. Cow-calf operations put the pairs to pasture because that is best for the cow at maintenance. Weaned beef calves will go to a feed lot and be fed a balance ration of grain and forage because this is best for muscle development. There is a science to it. Please make an effort, blue, to learn, then speak
mandarae41190 1 year ago
@mandarae41190 i understand that. but im just saying feeding them corn is bad. i know done properly it really is not as big a deal as people make it. but when there is farmers who are cutting corners and allow their livestock to get sick. hell thousands of people eat fast food everyday and dont die, still doesnt mean it isnt good for you...
bluedavenger 1 year ago
@bluedavenger Are you a veterinarian or an animal scientist with any sort of credibility to support this claim? And also, any farmer who cuts corners and lets their livestock get sick is an idiot. It's to their advantage to manage their livestock and money correctly to get the maximum production. Moral: Farmers care. Farmers feed the world.
mandarae41190 1 year ago
@mandarae41190 lol you think only vets know about animals... It doesnt take a genius to do research over corn fed cows... first example, wikipedia isnt full of fake info. they seem to agree with what i say. So do plenty of articles published by scientist and vets. maybe you should actually look into it and see if im wrong first before acusing me of being wrong.
bluedavenger 1 year ago
