  • Nice video. That really is oil pan science. What about the oil pans in Nascar? Are there still some kind of splash shields preventing the oil from escaping to the right side of the pan? I read somewhere that in early Nascar cars the oil escaped so far to the right that the oil pump did not have anything to pump. Wonder if thats only a myth.

  • @Gizmopflege Thanks, not to sure whats going on with Nascar but they likely use a dry sump with a kick out pan

  • Hi Groutaone. Awesome videos (especially the old CR500 ones!). Just wondering, is this setup only for roller cams? I know it's still a problem with flat tappet cams but wouldn't it reduce lubrication to the cam? I'm only asking here, because I have limited experience and been reading a Crane Cams break in procedure for flat tappet cams prior to swapping in a cam next week. It says to keep the engine above 1500rpm because the camshaft requires splash lubrication.

  • @b1600v8 Thanks for watching, this pan will reduce the oil to the cam but not enough to harm it. The first few minutes of your cam break in are critical. Heres a few tips that will help. If you have real stiff springs you may want to swap them out for stock ones or remove a coil if you have more than one per spring. Also along with the cam lube which you have already applied, overfill the crank case with a few litres of oil just for break in so the rods bat in the oil and toss it on the cam.

  • @groutaone Ok, cool. Thanks for your reply

  • huh never thought about the oil pan making any difference. Thanks for the eye opening video bud!

  • @KrankieV2 Most dont think much of it till a person starts squeezing every last horspower from an engine, then 20 HP means a lot

  • nice how you show the drag that oil can create. And those trays can indeed help a lot. I know that for the volvo engine's volvo designed 1 themself, and the had things sticking out near the crackshaft to "shave" the oil of the crankshaft. And it may only give a little gain, but its a easy thing to put in(if u buy 1that is profen to work)

Even beter would be a dry sump system with a vacuum in the engine. But thats pretty expensive, and it will cost some power to drive the pump

  • @gabbermaikel I kind of like the dry sumps myself, however they are costly

  • hey groutaone i have an intake on my truck that is an actual ram air (intake scoop comes out by a cutout in the bumper) and was wondering if one of those vacuum/boost gauge would show any type of boost i get from the air getting forced into the motor?

  • @6SpeedSilverado Interesting, however I dont think any boost could be measured as it would be so littlle, however if I'am wrong I sure would like to know the results, let me know.

  • @groutaone ok lol, i will let you know with a video of it.

  • I check in to see what vids you have up probably once a day... U know so much and do such a good job of explaining it! I have learned so much from just watching ur videos...Thanks!! U Rock!

  • @ksowin87 Thanks for watching and keeping an eye on what kind of trouble I get into next.

  • So, the windage tray prevents crank throws from cupping too much oil at 1000's of rpm., but also not preventing the crank throws from not sloshing too little oil into the cyl walls. Some engines have the jets to oil the piston underside, so what splashes oil on the piston underside now that the crank throws are less immersed? Anyway, the stock oil pan is good fror normal useage. No YouTube videos of inverted engines running on stands, why ?

  • @seapeddler A good pan is good at reducing oil being tossed up but does not eliminate this action, there is still plenty of oil for the pistons, just not so much.

  • very interesting, never would have thought that oil could have afected performance like that, good video, thankx for sharing this stuff, take care

  • @TheRickfix No problem, just glad a few people want to see it, thanks for watching

  • very informative...keep up the good work...

  • @jeffjwp Thanks, will do

  • nice videos i subscribed keep them coming !!

  • @lilbiGpena Thanks for the sub

  • @groutaone no problem thanks for the awesome videos!

  • wow i never knew that groutaone!. thanxs for the info. ps your juss spending time in the house cuz u ripped up ur lawn and dirty'd up the sofa pillow so im assuming the wife's pist at you HAHA j/k man awsome vid very informative. p.s i dont kno if it helps i dont get alot of traffic in my channel but i put u on my other channels deal or wutever its called pce out bud!!

  • @spidez8407 Thats a big favor your doing for me, I appreciate it, thanks.

  • cool vid, makes perfect sense to me. tc

  • Outstanding video. Thumbs up.

  • Very very interesting. Thanks a lot for posting.

  • huh, as usual you make a video about details that some wouldnt even think of.

  • hey groutaone, how do you know how much oil to put in now ? or it doesn't really matter as long as its enough to fill oil strainer cavity ? cheers

  • @Donut0boy When I originally built this engine, I put a mark on the dipstick when the pan was off and on the workbench, I measured how far down the rods would enter the pan and made a mark on the dipstick just under that level.

  • damn. this was cool to watch. something i never would have thought would ever be a performance problem. awesome.

  • @hershey710 Thanks, response like yours makes making these vids worthwhile to me

  • Why not go with a Dry sump system?

  • @bherrimanjade Dry sump is awesome except for the cost, I use common man oiling systems, but maybe one day I will upgrade.

  • I second rekjavicxxx's comment.

  • thanks i was looking into these ... very informational

  • So does your car act different using synthetic motor oil vs organic motor,or is it about the same?

  • @pulse0000 other then engine longevity thier would be a small difference. the synthetic oil can be thinner, and still lubricate the engine, thinner oil takes less power to pump, drains off the parts quicker etc...

  • @mageac Thanks for the info.

  • thanks Groutaone great video .

  • Cool....Must be a lot of drag in small air cooled engines that those dippers that splash oil on the parts.

    Great vid.....

  • Never considered wind in the lower end. Interesting video. Thanks!

  • groutaone, are you really using a cork gasket for your oil pan? And your right, oil pans are one of the most overlooked performance pieces. Great vids

  • @427ImportEater Yep I'am old school with gaskets but I will be using a 1pc felpro for the first time on this pump swap, video to follow

  • Great video. Do you have a welding tip to avoid flage twisting?

  • @xnihpseht Not sure what your project is but fasten it to a jig with welding or bolts so it wont distort when you weld. If you are welding an oil pan, bolt the pan to a spare block before welding.

  • @groutaone Thanks, I was thinking about that spare block idea too. I just doesn´t have one. I´m hoping to shoe horn a Dodge smallblock into a Mercedes W201 to use as a drift car. Believe me, there are some clerace issues to overcome.

  • very interesting and informative. normally a difficult concept, but you make it fun. thanks for the upload once again.

  • thinner oil helps

  • you know, i understand the mechanics of how a motor works, but when you my friend go into detail, it makes it WAY more understandable! thumbs all the way up

  • @flashperson Thank you

  • Nice video. Tell me more I want to learn.

  • Dude, it always amazes me about how you dissect the dynamics of things that most of us have never given a second thought! You're ability to analyze and then illustrate them is top notch! Thumbs WAY up! :)

  • @rekjavicxxx Thanks my friend, the best part about this kind of video is the fact that others are interested in the details, make these vids worthwhile to make, I appreciate you watching.

  • great video i never would of thought a oil pan could make you gain/lose power

  • @3rd4thgenFbody Very often overlooked, but always worth investigating

  • @dl650stromer That depends on how much oil is up at the top end when the engine is at full rpm for its intended amount of time, If that idea is pushed too much the engine can run out of oil, you are right but there is a deadly fine line there.

  • iv seem them in books.. they called them windage trays.. if i remember correctly

would u use a windage tran and one of these pans together? or one or the other?

  • @specialformula14 Yes windage tray is correct, and using them with the right oil pan is also correct, thanks for watching

  • I guess that's what you get when you tear up the nice grass LOL

Dang now I need to get a new oil pump and a oil pan ;-)

    Great Vid

  • @2LateIWon So its starting to cost money to watch my videos, he heh

  • Who makes that pan Moroso? I wonder if they hav one for the AMC 401

  • @traxxluver I think that was a Milodon pan, been a while I would have to check to know for sure

  • Oil is over-rated. Dont need it :D

  • Would i be able to find one like this for an AMC 258 l6?

  • @donnielovett Not sure on that

  • I love these educational type videos, you also explain things very nicely. This was great!

  • @nut3344 Glad you enjoyed it

  • I must say I am subscribed to many car channels but honestly you are the most helpfull and informative no bs strait to the point

  • @808moparskate Thanks, glad you like em, more tech vids in the works

  • is it really hard to be a married man? your eyes never gravitate towards young girls?

  • @beeqool Young girls are for little boys, I'am happy to be married to a beatiful woman

  • @groutaone that must be a great feeling i hope i will have one special girl in my life one day not just peek around

  • right before you said the oil is a parasitic loss, I was thinking you were going to say that. The design features in the pan that help manage the oil are proof.

    Cool topic - brilliant description

  • They probily seized a lot of bottom ends designing that oil pan. With your explaining videos, do you know how to service the forks(oil change and such) on a motocross bike?

  • @OffroadBeaver last time I changed fork seals on a dirtbike was before the forks were inverted like on my 500, not sure whats all up with the new style.

  • Great Video , Doing anything to you motor ?

  • @krazy45cat Thanks, just the new oil pump

  • youd never think that that would affect performance would ya

  • @KXRider212 A good pan can be a bit costly but hey an extra 20 hp is always handy

  • Happy wife, happy life eh!! Another great video Buddy!!☺

  • @805ROADKING Yep, keep her happy and things go smooth
