  • I imagine Bill Cosby probably listens to sophisticated stuff like Sonny Rollins all the time. I like Bill Cosby.

  • Silly me. I stopped listening to jazz produced after Coletrane's death, because I couldn't imagine it could still be relevant. How wrong I was.

  • me likey

  • That's my tune cooking the original lp recorded with Oliver Nelson on arrangements

  • I remember being in a clinic of John Patitucci a couple of years ago (if you don't know him, he played with Chick Corea, John Scofield, among many), and he said that the best thing he did to learn how to improvise melodically on the bass, was transcribing and playing Sonny Rollins solos. So FUCK YOU, quit listening if you don't like him, but please stop doing ignorant comments about his musicianship.

  • saxybair13

  • Happy Rollins Day!!!!

  • Happy 81st birthday Sonny. Great tenor Sax

  • someone have the harmony of the theme please??

  • QUE INCOMPARABLE VIRUTOSIDAD, GRACIAS A LOS QUE SUBEN ESTOS VIDEOS, QUE TENGAN LARGUISIMA VIDA.

  • Killer tone! Its so in your face but at the same time sweet! Love this man!

  • rollins is the colossus!!!!

  • Listening to this in a car on way to Copenhagen and the bridge to Sweden is pure happiness..

  • Hell Yeah! Thats great music B-)

  • Yeah.... jazz tends to have a lot of arpeggios, especially sax players. I mean sax has a tendency towards arpeggios just because of the fluidity plus its easy to like change keys. Every instruments is gonna have its own little charactersitics. Yeah, Coltranes outdues all legendary sax players though, and Chick Corea is freaaaaaaaking sweeeeeeeeeeet!!! holla back

  • @chubbypuppys yeah, I see what you mean. I thought Rollins was quite good until I read your comment, but yeah, all he does is play loads of apeggios. Thanks for opening my eyes to how rubbish these guys really are!

  • Sonny rollins is one of the jazz men who inspired me to guide my life to the jazz :D ... one of the greatest jazz players and composers ever !!!

  • 400th FCKING like !!!!

  • 3 DISLIKES MOTHA @#*#(&^(*#^(*@^

  • Great tone and remember the quality of microphones were not that good and there were no Justin Bieber special sound effects , this is real music

  • @studionyc...Forget COLTRANE OR ROLLINS I want to come to a big lecture hall...and see you teach music theory...MAYBE YOU WILL PLAY FOR US...IF YOU DON'T MINE:):):):):):)WHO IS MARK TURNER..... "O GREAT ONE"!!!!!!!! PLEASE LEAVE YOUR PHONE NO. I CAN'T WAIT.

  • Does anyone else think that he is the most overrated player of all times?

I can't listen to his simplistic, horrible improvs. He is basically repeating very simple 3-tone patterns again and again and again. And again. I would call his play intermediate. I also never liked his sound, very poor intonation and phrasing. He is a R&B player, he must fit the image of a 'legend' for people who do not know 'real' players. Sorry, it's true.

  • @studionyc , LOL, "3-tone patterns", you sir are a moron,and probably don't know any tunes yourself.

  • @studionyc You don't like when people arpeggio up and down the instrument? You do like, you know, jazz right?

Okay, Sonny wasn't as consistently great as Hawk or Young, but even just his work with Monk is worth his reputation.

  • @studionyc

Wow........ the ignorance. Sonny Rollins is one of the greatest saxophonists of all time. Do some reading.

  • @studionyc ooooooh my fucking shit ? :D no no no , you are crazy or what ? Sonny is one of the best saxophonist on the world and you say his tone is horrible ? i wanna see your playing , ok ? you dont know what is music ...

  • 1973 モントルーでのアルフィー・・・・増尾が居る・・このあと`野ばらによせて´か・・グレイト・ロリンズ

  • ........omg....... that guy is amazing. I'm playing sax for about 8 years now, but when I hear Sonny I feel like I just had my first lesson. I really wanna now whats up inside his head while he's playing.

  • The 3 that dislike this...need to be heard,seen,known,or don't won't to know lol

    A living master smh!!!!

  • mmmh, this is some song for the soul. I'm playing tenor saxophon since one year and he is my model^^

  • Ah, doing what you love never sounded so good

  • The radiation of soul is just breathtaking

  • if every Electric Bass player could swing like Bob Cranshaw..this Instrument would be much more appreciated by conservative Jazzmen who prefers Upright Bass.

  • Who are the tree guys who disliked this video?...

  • @SGCmyASS Probably just slip-ups. It happens.

  • Sonny Rollins always, always, makes me smile.

  • Anyone know where part 2 is?

  • i have this saxophone notes and 200 others songs, the list is on my youtube channel, so if you want to trade some songs, with me let me know.

and visit facebooks -saxophone notes- page, if your interested.

  • @mikeyquaint the fuck do u mean evrything else was boring?... wut do u understand abt music?

  • Arte

  • so perfect Rollins simply a genius

  • The bottom line of Rollins music was allways Bob Cranshaw.

  • OMG they cut this off before Sonny comes back in! WTF?

  • guitar solo: fail

  • @ricdeed I thought it was real good

  • I love the tenor saxophone.

  • he pwns

  • The chorus has such great style

  • sax and sex. I feel good :D

  • thelsradave you must be young...trane knew/played anything from r and b to honking. trane and rollins hung together all the time. get it right man!!!!

  • Sonny has a considerably more diverse musical personality than Trane had.

  • Alfie's theme?

I hear "Hit the road Jack"

  • SAW SONNY IN MAY... L.A... HE SHOWED US HOW A MASTERS PUTS IN WORK.

HE KNOWS MORE ABOUT THAT HORN THEN ANYONE LIVING!!!! PERIOD.

  • "The Saxophone Colossus" plays a hot version of his "Alfie". Sonny Rollins wrote the music for the movie but the Dionne Warwick/Burt Bacharach vocal was tacked onto the movie. The music was a rare big band recording by Sonny and was arranged by Oliver Nelson. ALL of the CD is great: you'll love it.

  • Rollins swings like a barn door in a storm!

  • That's the good old jazz. Bring me the beer woman!

  • Sunday Jazz !

  • It's rare you see a Les Paul being used for Jazz.

  • songs like this that we must make reference, he is a great artist and his intimacy with the sax is indisputable. He dominates the sax.

  • this is amazing

  • KILL- EM BIG SONNY ROLLINS MY MAN

  • I saw him around this same time with this same band in a small club. I was sitting only a few feet away from the bell of his horn. Unreal!

  • I believe it is in A major : Learn your scales and then you will learn so many other songs instead of how to read sheet music. Learn how the tones fall and interact. Then you will be prepared when someone changes the key on you AND THEY WILL. Yes damn it do the arpeggios as well they are actually teaching you something to say. Remember this is a language with different dialects don't sound like your reading just speak from the heart.

  • @tucsonpersonified m,an i dont know any notes i just create music from the heart. but i dont diss ppl who learn theory.

  • @tucsonpersonified man first of all this is definately in minor, and also i think its A minor (for tenor) but i could be mistaken about the key

  • @Othaepia why is this comment dissed so badly!?! this is a compliment to the people in the video. HAHAHAH and the peter north reference is funny. loosen up and laugh

  • yeah.. thepeople...I guess the reason or rhyme comment was misunderstood... and I can see why..what I meant is to be able to make great music without normal musical structure just shows the genius of the men....

as for the Peter North comment... maybe they don't know that he is a porn star who is a genius with his penis...haha..

Thanks for the nice comment ...man... give me thumbs up.. i will give you one

  • @Othaepia i did on ur other comment and i did on this one

  • @Othaepia Save your breath... somethings are not well received just because we want them to. WTF does Peter North have to do with this great solo by Sonny Rollins or any of the Men performing. You are like the Guy at a jam session playing in A major. When the tune is in Bb Minor, that shit ain't funny its not cool! but just get it right or get off the bandstand. PS. Stop Talking while they soloing!

  • @wizard100115 are you drunk?

  • I'm just in love with this...

  • he's playing tomorrow in zagreb, croatia. looking so much forward to a great cool jazz evening!!!

  • Rina200534, use your ears dude!

  • Man he can make his saxophone sing! man i wish i could play this but i can never find the sheets to it! he's so good! my new idol!!!!

  • just try it out it will take some time but you will play similar to him

  • you would do yourself a world of good if you just learned it by ear

  • Can't wait to see him on the 22nd of October!

  • where at?

  • Groningen, Nethertlands. But I think he is doing a small EUropean tour.

  • @@youtube!!!!!!!tres magnifique!!!!!!!

  • such a powerful and individualistic delivery!

  • trully remarcable, bravisimo!!!

  • sonny rollins wrote the movie soundtrack

for the michael caine classic, Alfie. check

    it out.

  • yes he did, but the producer didn't liked it that much and he didn't use it. So this song is not in the movie, it's a shame, because me think it's naaiz

  • you are wrong and swiggadean is right.

not only is this song in the movie, every song in it, is the variation of its fantastic theme. check the trailer on you-tube for

    alfie 1966.

  • Oliver Nelson wrote the sound track, but I think Rollins wrote this tune. The band that played that sound track was nuts!!

  • oliver nelson wrote the arrangements

based on sonny's charts, and so he conducted the eleven man orchestra.

but rollins is in charge of his music

he gave lot of latitude to kenny burrell.

in original form this is fantastic music.

this page is one concert in 73.

  • oh cool, I was misinformed. Thanks for the info.

  • Sympa ce thème... Sonny Rollins a toujours le sens des thèmes... Là, c'est bien, parce qu'il y a un piano... Sinon, S. Rollins se perd dans des impros assez chiantes souvent..

  • yeah. That's relaxation.

  • Magnifique. Merci.

  • i can play that on my tronbone

  • =' )

  • Walter Davis is amazing on piano

  • my man bob cranshaw on bass

  • It was a favorite of mine 30 years ago, and it still rivets the soul!

  • hello, i'm new to this music, but could someone recomend me 70's new wave/folk played with saxophone(i think), i'm looking for 1 specific song actually...

  • what song?

  • Niccee

  • Anyone recognize the similarity between this and "Birk's Works" by Dizzie? I love jazz musicians...

  • are you suggesting a lack of originality?

  • Yeah, very similar. Also what about Ellington's 'Caravan' and Dizzy's 'Nights in Tunisia'.

  • I think Caravan is a pseudo-remake of NIght in Tunisia.

  • Despite some sarcastic comments here, yeah the heads are pretty similar. Pretty different form though.

  • i wish that this version of alfie theme was on his original c.d..because on his original c.d. he has another version...

  • one of his best songs ever.

  • Anybody out there remember the Chase manny bank commercial with Sonny?

    If so give a shout!

  • I love Sonny Rollins score for 'Alfie' This is a great live version. Thanks for posting.

  • Sonny blows more on the recorded version.Drummer kinda messin' it up here.

  • Definitely Sonny Rollins best song.

  • You are Rassist if you think that he is Bin...

Sonny Rollins ist a very good soxophonist and musician, Mister chokolate.

    Thank you for the music....

  • dude ur a retard u dont know wtf your talking about so stfu while ur still ahead u racist fuck :)

  • His phrasing tells a story. Crazy!

  • really like walter davis jr. solo...is pt. 2 around? thanks for posting

  • nagyon jó!

  • Great performance by Mr. Rollins one more Time

  • whats the name of this song?!

    It's Alfie???

  • It's the theme used in the movie "Alfie"

  • No. Really... I thought the theme for Alfie was just called "Alfie"... hmm

  • Rollins' film track music was not used; instead, a more syrupy music with violins was issued as the music score.

  • What do you mean bro?

Are you sayin that this is not him?

  • mursielago1: rest assured, this IS Sonny Rollins. What I mean is this: Sonny was invited to compose and record the music score for the movie 'Alfie'. When the producer heard the music he was afraid that it would be too powerful and detract from the end product. Which is why he demanded new, more conventional music by someone else, in order to draw as large audiences as possible.

  • Burt Bacharach is hardly a conventional hack, though. That was a win-win situation for the producer.

  • I wish i could play like him!

  • This goes right to the Favorites!

  • THIS SONG ROCKZ!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm playing on my alto sax, but I'll never reach his tone quality, articulation, and feelings.

  • Why even play if you don't even believe...?

  • Berg Larsen Mouthpiece?

  • yes. it's huge too, 130/2 i believe

  • Are you refering to the size of Sonny's Berg Larsen mouthpiece? That's what he plays on right, the brand I mean?

  • yeah i am. yes it is a berg larsen, vintage duckbill if i'm not mistaken. 130/2 like i said before.

  • sonny rollins chops

  • Grande!!!!!

  • This is probally one of my favorite Sonny Rollins songs.

  • when sonny comes to san diego???

  • absolutely love this song

  • Sonny is a master because of his incredible chops: articulation, tone, voicing and a vast vocabulary that allow him to not just play the kind of creative lines he does but to weave in a quote in one arpeggio without really playing the melody. That´s what Jamey Aebersold means when he says to play changes on a head and suggest the melody without actually playing it.

  • Ain't he aswell a great player cause he feels the rythm hard and broadcast that feelings to the audience ? Anyway, all these attacks melted into the tune makes me feel like WOW

  • @kingpleasure exactly, it sounds like sh*t. He sounds like an intermediate student. SR is the hero for people who know nothing about jazz. It's embarrassing to read the comments ('dominates the horn', 'woman, bring me the beer'). Listen to some Mark Turner, will ya?

  • @studionyc Coltrane called Sonny the most impressive tenor man of his day, so don't even tell me he sounds like an "intermediate student." What makes you think you have the right to criticize one of the most legendary jazz saxophonists in history?

  • @studionyc, please go view Jason Marsalis' video on "jazz nerds." You must be one of them, if you play any instrument really at all.

  • @studionyc Most tenor saxophonists/professors I've ever met with/listened to/studied with/heard of will recommend listening to/the study of Rollins as often as Coltrane. It would be arrogant to believe your opinion is fact, especially when compared to the prevailing opinion of jazz professionals and enthusiasts across the world.

  • Love this song! Saw him play a portion of it, right in the middle of "In A Sentimental Mood" last November in Scottsdale, AZ. It was amazing. We met him afterward and he was surprised that we had caught his "quote" of Alfie during the performance.

    Sonny Rocks!

  • this song is so gd... im trying to play this now on my alto
