@S0lidState , the character was Tonia Barrows she was the only yeoman that came after Rand that played a major part in an episode. If they wrote Rand out (a big mistake), at least they could have replaced her with Barrows.

She didn't really add much to the show (IMO) and they already had two awesome and beautiful women characters (Uhura and Chapel). Since the focus was on the triumvirate that is Kirk/Spock/McCoy, I don't think a replacement for her was necessary. However, I would have liked to see more of Barrows. I liked her little romance with McCoy in Shore Leave. =D

@maswellasm , compared to Rand and Uhura, Chapel was pale and uninteresting. At least Rand played a major role (Charlie X, Miri, Enemy Within) in some of the episodes she was in. Then again, of the 3 female leads, Grace Lee Whitney was the only one who wasn't sleeping with Gene Roddenberry. No wonder she was jettisoned.

From what I understand, Nichols stayed on the show because MLK had told her what an inspiration she was to the supporters of the Civil Rights Movement, not because she was sleeping with anyone. It seemed like they wanted Rand to be one of the more major characters, but I don't think she was as well received as they had hoped, so they wrote her out.

Let's face it, except with only one episode, Chapel didn't do much of anything and most the female parts became Kirk's conquest of the week.

@PungiFungi On Rand's page at the Star Trek wiki, it said that she had been written so far as the tribbles episode but Roddenberry went through at some point and crossed out all of her parts had them rewrite them again. Personally, I felt like a lot of the dames-of-the-hour added more to the show than Rand ever would have, but that's just me. Really, though, the show was about Kirk, Spock, and McCoy and anyone else was just going to come secondary to that.
