I first heard TRB in the winter of 1977/1978 when I was living in Scotland. Wow, talk about an adrenaline rush! To me, it's sad that this song is still so relevant today, in 2011. Tom always wrote great lyrics!
Tom Robinson was one of the best lyricists of the late seventies New Wave (his slant was generally topical). He championed rock against racism, freedom of speech, the disabled, homosexuals (of course), socialism and other worthy causes.
Just found the documentary you loaded up, including the live footage from Oxford in 1979. I had forgotten just how good you were live. Fantastic stuff.
This is what the students need for a riot..OOps sorry they are very particular over what they believe. Liberal rather than UP TURN THE WORLD.. Dont vandilieze just Mob Rule .. OK
Great song, great video, great lyrics and one of the very best guitar solos ever. Would have loved the full version with "I don't want any trouble and I ain't after a fight..." as temporary calming after the hot solo at 3:09 and before the last chorus :)
Btw, are there there any more TRB live tracks from the Lyceum Theatre '77 besides Rising Free E.P. and Waiting For My Man? The sound on these 5 tracks is superb so it would definitely be worth of releasing. Keep up the great work Tom!
Can't believe it's taken me this long to discover Tom and the TRB, now I'm absolutely hooked on the guy! Explosively expressive songs with real honest depth, wit and power, wrapped up in a sonic treat of musical talent.. I'm lovin it all. cheers Tom!
Fantastic stuff, proper rock n roll, I first heard this on the Power In The Darkness reissue...a truly great album, from a truly great band, who never got the credit they deserved..
The video was awesome, especially the rocket ship of the space age and people on roller skates and wings symbolizing our dysfunctional social systems.
I absolutely loved this band, and Tom as well. Growing up gay as a teenager in the late '70s, Tom was very important to me. He broke those stereotypes (of which many still exist) and showed a different way with music. It didn't have to be all disco, and being working class and on a council estate this music spoke to me directly. Even though I am now 43 the music stays with me as a reminder of a time that was very important to me.
i loved this band. politically it was a shit time, economically it was shite, but the bands were fuckin great, or perhaps it was just I was the right age? Maybe Discuss?
My first love has always been progressive rock but TRB were just sensational. Their music still sounds fresh and I continue to love them 30 years on !
Tom Robinson and 'Power in the darkness' remains one of the most influential records on me and will always be so. The time, the place, the sexuality, the politics, the music, the oppression, the anger and frustration, and of course the hope all seared into the mind of this working class teenager during a time that can never come again. But christ wasn't it exciting. Tom rocked like no other...total respect to the TRB.
The music mattered then .... it matters now. My brother and I heard TRB on WNEW-FM radio in New York and to this day we still rock out when we listen. TRB RULES!

@kylereese2000 Yes they did, but their second album was poor compared to the first, there were personnel problems and soon the band broke up

@TheKenfig yes..but compare it to the acclaim the likes of the Sex Pistols got and you'll get where I'm coming from..either way, a great album.

Hi Tom,
Great that you've loaded these up. Saw you and the band in Oxford in 79, with Stiff Little Fingers in support, absolutely classic gig.

Such a great song! And the guitar solo's just perfect. Today's rock/punk groups seem quite lame compared to this stuff...
