@ErikWanTan Yeah, they have the same pronunciation, but different meanings. 是 means "is" "am" 'are"(there aren't any verb conjugations). 事 means "business/matter".
@sonicxisforever She said 有事吗 meaning "to have something[to take care of]". 是 would not make sense in that sentence. if someone said : 他是日本人 "he is Japanese" its obvious they mean 是 and not 事. You can tell from the context of the sentence.
#1: So, instead of wei, how should I say to be polite?
If it's rude, why you go on treaching that? I wish to learn polite Mandarin of course. Our cultures are so different and mistakes of any kind are so easy to be done. I don't wish to make additional cultural and linguistic mistakes. 谢谢。
im chinese and one of my friends came to my house and played this video while i was playing videos #1 do not awnser the phone with wei, that is rude. #2 incorrect grammar
Using "wei" to answer a phone call is not impolite. it's like the word "Hello" in English, or "yaboseyo" in Korean, or "moshi moshi" in Japanese, etc.. But it's true that "wei" is a rude word in face to face communication.
@ActiveChinese my parents used to scold me when i used wei to anwser the phone and told me it was offensive so thats how i was brought up, they told me to just use ni hao when awnsering the phone

I want an apple: wo xiang yao ge ping guo
"xiang yao" "yao" "xiang" all mean "want"
"xiang" can also mean "think"
If you want to reject an offer say "wo bu yao le, xie xie" adding "le" at the end of a sentence can soften it down quite a bit

Like the fact that the dialogue is reviewed with proper tones! This helps beginners to understand the importance of tones!
Nice dialogue--the lady was very fluid in her phrasing!

@ErikWanTan 是 = to be 事 = a thing, or work A lot of mandarin words sound the same. You have to know how to listen and take it in context.
