  • I'm coming into this conversation late, but I just gotta say it doesn't sound like your major is political science.

  • To all below and above my comment

this has nothing to do with "Republicans"

    "Democrats" "Who's right, who's wrong"

    Theyre both bullshit!

You've all been brainwashed keep watching MTV and CNN

  • what a bumbo.

  • 'ey! What happend to the cute blond girl? Want her back ... :'(

  • Yes. It's a sad thing the being a "moderate Republican" really isn't a possibility these days. I look back at accomplishments of Richard Nixon (he may have been a crook, but he still wasn't all bad) such as OSHA, the EPA, and opening relations with China. I'm sure I wouldn't agree with EVERYTHING he did, but he was really doing good for the American people. These days he wouldn't have gotten the nomination. Keep up the good work, Haley!

  • ouch...

    nice job, once again!

  • lol, as always hon, loved it. the sinking ship does indeed seem beyond merely capsizing.....

as for comments by ClingingMars, if people are so comfortable with losing moderate voices from the GOP, you might as well have the 2012 convention in a megachurch.

  • when conservatism is on the ballot, it wins. plain n simple.

  • conservatism hasn't got that much to do with Republican politics these past few years, or have you been in cryo-stasis or something?

intervetionist foreign wars, the original bank bail out with almost no accountability, those are not conservative by definition.

by definition, conservatives should also be pro-choice, seeing as how they want gov't out of your personal life.

what exactly do you think 'conservative' means?

  • GWB was not a conservative.

conservatism deals with 3 areas, and it is NOT libertarianism.

    social conservatism

    fiscal conservatism

    national security conservatism

social conservatism is a commitment to the sanctity of life (pro-life), the 2nd amendment, and traditional values (though i often find traditional values issues personally unimportant)

fiscal conservatism is Reaganomics, lower taxes, lower spending, etc.

and finally, national security conservatism, or "peace through strength".

  • and yes, you are right, conservatism has been far from the minds of most Republicans for quite some time. which is why we have been unsuccessful.

  • the term 'social conservatism' is a media construct, a relatively new term which has taken on a life of its own thanks to commentators, it has no bearing on conservatism's fundamental principles. it relates to the religious right's effort to hijack the party.

and yes, i'm all for small gov't style conservatism, as long as it has a conscience. if Repubs were like that, they'd do better. we agree there.

  • as long as it has a conscience? me too! that's why I support most of social conservatism, including the right to life.

  • "social conservatism is a commitment to the sanctity of life (pro-life)"

Being anti-abortion (lets call it what it really is), is not a commitment to the sanctity of life. It's a commitment to platitudes, and superficial ideals that don't really address the reality of the issue of abortion. As gothafunk so well pointed out, social conservatism is a term that's rooted in Christian fundamentalism.

  • it's pro-life, that's what it REALLY is. it's the belief that life begins at conception. social conservatism does not just rest at abortion, however.

  • That's right, we want to make sure those babies are born, so when they grow up, we can send them off to war.

  • yeah, that's right, cause all dem conservatives are warmongers! good job! :)

  • If i was to peg a group of warmongers to a political party in the USA, guess where all eyes are facing.

  • where all the liberals are facing is towads the conservatives, and where all the conservatives are facing is towards GWB, because he was NO conservative

  • "GWB, because he was NO conservative"

Oh, spare me the post-presidential criticisms of GWB.. The GOP didn't miss a step when following ole' GWB for the past 8 years... so, again, spare me, and even spare George Bush this pathetic, post-presidential scape goatism.

  • sorry that it's illegal to criticize presidents now. and while the GOP may have done that, I didn't.

  • "sorry that it's illegal to criticize presidents now"

Yeah, it's illegal. Didn't you know? Mellow dramatic, much?

"and while the GOP may have done that, I didn't. "

I guess I'll have to take your word for it, but I really find that unlikely, considering this recent GOP "turn against Bush" and say "he wasn't a 'true conservative'" spiel is just that.. a spiel, and a bandwagon that you've most likely just got on with the rest of the GOP that's doing anything it can to regain credibility.

  • lol.. love the ending..

  • good riddance.

  • he's a rhino, not a real Republican.

  • That's the kind of thinking that will send Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins into the Democratic party. Keep up the good work.

  • okay, then good bye to them :)

a reformation of the party is what's needed, and getting rid of those who vote with the Democrats anyway is a good start.

  • Every party is a coalition of people on a continuum of opinions. If you guys want the Republican party to be small and pure, good luck with that. It's not a recipe for governance.

  • indeed, Ronald Reagan was good at establishing coalitions. but the Republican coalition as it stands is no different than the Democrats on many issues.
