But she won't admit it even when she's older and time changed a lot in the 1970's.She's just too embarrassed to admit that she has an indian or ceylon blood in her body and also she has a brown mother! What a fucking cunt! One of the most forgetable female stars of all time!!Nobody talks about her today!!
@Calidesidiva You have to keep in mind when she was born and in her time mixed blood were not well looked upon and accepted. Those people were torn between 2 worlds. She did simply what was best for her at the time.
I believe her father was Irish, not English, and her mother was from India. I don't blame Merle Oberon for passing her mother off as her maid I am sure she wanted her mother in her life, and passing her off as her maid was the best and only way they could be together back then.
Lovely beauty ,pity she always passed off her indian mother as her servant.I understand those days were different. If she said the truth it would wreck her career.
i couldn't agree more . her performance in the epic that is wuthering heights was outsatanding alongside sir laurence olivier .david niven . and flora robson . the film was made in 1939 71 years ago they have tried several re-makes of wuthering heights but nothing even comes close to the 1939 total masterpiece . the film is amazing heartbreaking and totaly beautiful . oh how lucky we are to have this lovely film still with us to this day .
beautiful, i remember a summer when i was a child i was in loved with a girl in spain who looked a lot like her and at that time and I saw wuthering heights and she became my favorite actress :- )
Ms Oberon was one of Hollywood's greatest beauties and a grand movie star of the 30's and 40's working with among others Laurence Oliver, William Wyler, David Niven, et al.
Ms Oberon was fabulously wealthy and lived in high style and married for the 4th time a man 25 years her Junior.
Ms Oberson was also very generous to charities in both the USA and Mexico. And while she had a very torrid life she was equally at home with society and friends were Irene Dunne, Loretta Young, Cary Grant
She was an incredibly beautiful lady. Her performance in Wuthering Heights was simply stunning as Catherine Earnshaw. She never got the credit she deserved as an top actress. She had that one thing that all actresses crave.......natural, stunning beauty combined with God-given talent. Those that were lucky enough to meet this lady, were left with an indelible impression; beauty, grace and charm. 30 years after she left us we still acknowledge it, and rightly so.
A fine tribute to a truly beautiful and talented lady. Ever-mindful of her tender roots she conquered the xenophobia of the Hollywood executives and rose to become one of the world's most beautiful and talented actresses.
Robert Wolden was so fortunate to have been loved by both Merle and Audrey. They both died with him by their sides. He was their "angel" and he too, was blessed to have known them intimately.
She was Indian. But in those days, you could not admit such a thing, so she claimed to be from Tasmania! Today thanks to Bollywood, it's the other way round!
Merle Oberon was one of the greatest ladies of screen, like Loretta Young, classy, beautiful, charming, from another era, a much romantic and glamouros era when it was possible to dream
From what i've read her mum was of mixed anglo/sri lankan background and her father was either Irish or British. And she was born in Bombay and grew up in Calcutta and left India when she was 17.
I like your vid clip and I've rated it as awesome. I've done another video clip on some old cigarette cards of 1930's movie stars, including: Merle Oberon, Bing Crosby, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Clark Gable, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo,Johnny Weismuller, Gary Cooper and Carole Lombard.
who saw wuthering heights and does not fall in love about merle oberon?

She reminds me of Rhona Mitra, cuz one of her parents is Anglo-Indian and the other is white. How sad that she couldn't admit to her roots. :/

There were rumors that she was born in Tasmania, but that may have been a cover story for her birth in India.
Lovely tribute. Thank you.
