I think I know why "He makes hats" means "He's nuts"...In Alice in Wonderland the MadHatter was goofy... men who actually made hats in the 19'th century used a dye that eventually wreaked havoc on their brains and caused serious health conditions that made them "mad" or insane. Quite sad, actually.
quite correct--in england it was 'mad as a hatter'-there was also a cave where people would ask advice-the dwellers were always a bit loopy 'cuz there was a methane gas leak and they were always breathing it(wish i could remember the full story...)
