Because the movements are familiar indeed, im almost sure than most of all of those slashes and stances came from Heishiro Mitsurugi of Soul Calibur. Check the Mitsurugi katana demo on youtube and you will agree with me.

one block, one very simple just keeping your sword at the ready in your center block would've stopped that and the shock would've really hurt his wrist..

Some later forms of many schools do look more impressive than early forms, though. However, I don't do iaido so I really can't say one way or another for that style.

Actually, i learned that in some Iai schools, the saya is used for striking limbs or vital points, while the blade is used for the finishing blow. The blade itself isn't the only weapon in a fight.
