What Z100 did, was recreate the personality and energy that its AM predecessors, WMCA, WABC and WNBC, had in the 60s and 70s--just moved it to FM. Personality hit radio still works--Z100 has had a run of 27 years near the top--and a station that does things the same way playing oldies, WCBS-FM, is also a big success,

Broadcasters all over the country should be thinking about taking an ax to their automation and hard drives and bring back live, entertaining human voices to present it all.

Z100 was cloned by many radio station markets.

In Rapid City, South Dakota in 1985 HIT100 KGGGFM (now Classic Rock The Fox 100.3) launched in 1985, and left the air in January 1994. Unlike Z100, HIT100 was automated.
